Educate me on starting with rough

Thank you for your input, @PrecisionGem. I was hoping someone with your perspective would comment. I can only imagine how hard it would be to deal with high expectations, and certainly hadn't thought of the risk of the stone shattering:(2.

I had some tiny Luc Yen cobalt spinels French cut well over a year ago way more than half of them shattered because the material is heavily included and crumbly.

Here's a typical example of buying parcels. I was in Africa, in Arusha and was offered this parcel. I didn't really need the parcel, but there was one large stone I wanted. The negotiated price of the single stone was so high that it didn't make sense not to take the whole parcel. Here's what's left of the parcel, I cut maybe 5 or 6 stones from it, including one a trillion shape that TL has now set into a ring. These are spessartine garnets from Tanzania, back when the find first came out.

This is the single 30 ct stone. The crown jewel of the parcel as it is much cleaner than the other stones and also larger.

Some day I should cut this one, as I have been sitting on it for 9 years now.

How devastating! I would probably cry.

Wow, it is gorgeous! I'm sure it will be a jaw dropping specimen.

Many many years ago I had Doug from Bespoke Gems cut a asscher citrine for me - although I didn't keep it, he was totally lovely about the process and very helpful recommending which rough to use.

May I ask what are the very blue stones bottom right in the picture?
Those are some blue topaz. A stone with a lot of bang for your buck. I don’t cut these often, as to make it worth while I really need to cut a large stone, and I don’t like cutting large stones that much. Topaz also can be a bugger to polish sometimes.

@PrecisionGem Just because I do not remember any treated topaz from you, the colour was surprising. A blue dream!

All blue topaz is treated, except for the very pale blue. The darker the blue, the valuable the stone for topaz, and there is no premium for untreated material. Really sapphire and ruby are the only colored stones were unheated carry any premium.

@PrecisionGem If you don’t plan on cutting it all, maybe you should start selling some of that rough to PS’ers :mrgreen2:
