It's starting to get cooler here, and of course with that the electric blanket I bought last November stopped working. If you have an electric blanket that you love, tell me about it! I'm looking for one that's more of a throw size. I use it for my lap on chilly mornings while working at my desk, rather than turning on the heat.

I'd love it if it could be washed (is this even a thing), because my dogs will inevitably lay on it.

I know someone who one burned his house down and another who spent months in the hospital because of one.

Oh my gosh, that is terrible. I'd heard the safety of the blankets have improved in recent years, but I'm not one to take risks if either of those outcomes are still possible :(

I have a few from Costco. They’re packed away somewhere but when I find them I’ll share here. I love them. Toasty warm.

I didn't think of Costco! Thanks! They have such a good return policy too.

That was in the last 2-3 years.
If anything the quality of them has gone down.

@Karl_K That's awful!

I would never have one because I'm always too hot, lol. Now, if they made a safe cooling blanket, that would be awesome. My DD1 uses one to "preheat" the bed, then turns it off.

I've seen heated lap blankets at Walmart. Sunbeam brand I think.

Anything electrical has the possibility of burning the house down, including your phone charger. My nephew's electric blanket caught fire last fall. Luckily he was awake and put it out before it did more than frizzle the carpet. Over the next week he lost a computer, a microwave, a refrigerator, and a tv the same way. The contractors working on the house across the street had damaged the electrical lines to the house causing dangerous surges.

Another reason to get a good goose down comforter.
They are amazingly warm, last forever if you take care of them, add nothing to the electric bill, and are not fire hazzards.

One thing though...
They're very light.
Many people incorrectly associate weight with warmth.

They scare the bejezus out of me
ive never liked them
I assume they are safer now ?

I know here you can take them to your local fire station to get them checked at the start of winter

I hope his insurence company were helpful

This is terrifying!

seeing that electric blankets don't seem very safe, perhaps consider an electric heating pad or hot water bottle ... ??? heating pad covers are washable. they can be easily purchased or made at home. hot water bottles cover are easily washable as well

You're welcome. Costco rocks. If you aren't pleased with a purchase it is never an issue to return the purchase. And so far I have found most of their products to be high quality.

I think so long as you buy a quality brand and get it checked every year, throw it out when it gets too old and don't have it on when you arnt home and turn it off when you get into bed its probably safe
This winter we were cold getting into bed and Gary almost brought one
Many years ago when he was a sales rep he had a narrow escape when staying at a motel and the electrical blanket went on fire
the house behind us when i was a kid had one go on fire - my dad went out and got us fire extinguishes because we had a rural volunteer fire service where we lived and the locals uaed to call it SOS
as in Safe Our Section, because by the time they got to you that was all that was left

I'm thinking I might go the hot water bottle route!

I'm only planning to use it during the day while working. But I had definitely forgotten to turn off my previous blanket more than once (the auto shut off kicked in) , so I'm thinking I'll go the safer hot water bottle route.

There is something so warm and comforting about the good old fashoned hottie
Mind you not too old a one

HI:

If you are not allergic to wool or cashmere, I'd get a throw. If you are not adverse to feathers, I'd get a down comforter (they come in many weights...I have four for different seasons)

cheers--Sharon

Off on a tangent but i once crocheted a bed cover
i started off in the autumn in front of the telly at night
didn't get it finished till the sunmer and i was sweltering under that thing

i think that really is, truly, your safest route. of course, you can get cashmere or down throws, as well. but i sense you are looking for something *instantaneously warm*

personally, i would not want to deal with the risks and hazards of an electric blanket.

-be sure to turn it off

-make sure to check it each season to see if the electrical components are in good working order

-do not leave it unattended

and even then one really cannot predict a "short circuit" in wiring or a surge in electricity

you can get all sort of covers for your hot water bottle. the bottles also come in the traditional classic shape and well as other shapes to suit your needs. the longer thinner ones can be draped over sore neck and shoulders much like a heated scarf.

i'd love to knit a fabulous cashmere water bottle cover. its just a pity that i don't know how to knit just yet ...
