Emerald 1.6 carat: H color but IF -- smart decision?

I am looking for a 1.5-1.7 emerald cut with a budget of 8k-10k.

I found this diamond and it looks promising:

Very Good-cut, H-color, IF-clarity, Emerald-Cut, 1.66-carat Diamond --- $10,3500

It's a bit over my budget -- just barely -- and the carat size is ideal. Another PriceScope user suggested to go with a higher clarity but stick to a G/H color to get a better value.

Thoughts?

This is the look I want to achieve

You simply cannot buy an emerald cut without pictures. It is impossible. They vary in appearance and certainly in light performance. I am going to recommend Good Old Gold because they will call in stones and make you a video so you can judge the cut and light performance for yourself. I recently bought an asscher from them, and they made me this video. As you can see, all 4 stones were nice, but there would have been no way to make the right choice just from numbers or even a picture.

What I will add is that I wouldn't ever want to pay for IF clarity if I could avoid it. I do like VS1 in an emerald cut because I want a step cut stone to be totally eyeclean. I actually did have to get a VVS1 in order to get the best cut stone. So be open to higher clarities but try for the VS1 if you can. My stone is the second one in the video, the H VVS1.

Thanks for the reply. The IF is a major bonus just for my own mind but is certainly not a requirement or even a major factor. The stone is listed through Blue Nile and the carat size for the price seemed interesting. The stone is also listed with fluorescence and from what I do think I would really like the bluish tinge.

I have heard several positive things about Good Old Gold and will check them out.

Does Blue Nile's return policy help with the "sight unseen" issue or would you recommend to simply stay away from purchasing only based off inventory data?

That price seems too good to be true. I'm on my phone, so I can't compare easily, but it seems low. I agree with DS...I'd prefer a lower clarity (VS1/2) and a larger stone for the same budget. IF clarity is a premium you will never see...

ETA: price is in line, but I'd still want larger stone, lower clarity...

With the strong fluor and price is bet it has negative fluor issues.

Most of us really are not equipped to judge light performance and cut quality without some help. I wouldn't buy any diamond from a vendor that does not at least provide pictures and either an idealscope image or an ASET image. You might do okay buying a round blind, but you'd be taking a huge risk to buy any fancy cut diamond blind. I mean, out of 20 emerald cuts in a price category, 3 or 4 might show up better than the others and 1 or 2 might really stand out. How could you possibly do that without seeing the stones? People would never buy a house or a car without seeing them thoroughly and having them checked out, so I do not think diamonds are any different!

Makes sense.

I emailed Good Old Gold so hopefully that moves me in a positive direction.

Thanks everyone!!

Awesome! I really think it will. I'd say also maybe pop over to their site and watch some of their videos about color and step cuts (asschers and emerald cuts). I think you might find it interesting.

ETA and of course please come back with the options they find you, I LOVE a gog video

Good luck!!! Can't wait to see what you find!

Unfortunately, BN does not post actual pictures of the stone, does not provide a video or even an ASET (check for light performance aka sparkle factor). H colour is very safe, IF clarity is overkill (VS1 is very clean and most VS2 is also very clean from all angles). To make things more difficult, there is no formula at all that will guarantee you a decent EC. Sure there are recommendation for depth and table % to be between 60 and 65% but many duds also fit into these specification, hence a picture is required at the very least. Going with GOG will take the guesswork out for you.

Is the ring in the picture only 1.6 carats? It looks bigger than mine! I just got my ring and its 3.2 but it looks so small to me. What size finger is the ring on? Maybe it's my large size 7 finger that makes my diamond look little...image_3021.jpg

That's a 3.2 ct center stone or total CTW?

Also the op doesn't say that stone is any particular size, or what size finger its on, so there's really no way to tell. That's just an inspiration pic she posted.
