Emerald Cut Pros?

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the early stages of my hunt for a diamond for an engagement ring. My girlfriend finally settled on Emerald cut as the shape she loves most.

I'm planning to propose in the next 6 months or so and would appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the emerald cut pros. I've read Yuketiel and Good Old Gold were a couple known for their ability to find and source well cut and high performing step cuts. Is this still the case and are there others I should look into as well? She prefers more modern cut faceting rather than vintage.

Thank you in advance for your help. I'm sure I will be updating this forum regularly as I get closer to selecting a stone. Please let me know if there's any additional information I can provide.

When you are ready to buy, we can probably recommend some stones. It's essential to have photos to find a good EC, so we look at vendors who have photos and then sometimes a NY vendor such as IDJ can call them in or pick them up if the stone is in NYC. However, if you have James Allen provide ASET images, then I would buy directly from them.

You'll just need to tell us your budget, I am sure people will be glad to help you narrow down some stones. It would also be helpful to have an idea of the kind of setting she wants, because we can help you with that, as well. So just come back and post when you are ready to buy. Allow 3 months before you want to propose to give time to find the stone and also just in case the setting ends up being ordered or custom made.

Thanks for the advice! It’s reassuring to hear there are online vendors who I can confidently purchase from.

I will post again when I’m closer to a purchase.

Hi! Congratulations to you!
If your girlfriend is 100% sure she wants an emerald, that’s wonderful and it is a beautiful cut. But for what it’s worth... my story with emeralds...

I too thought I wanted an emerald as an upgrade. Then when I really looked at them, I didn’t see that “sparkle” when compared to a round. Then I thought, ok... how about an ascher, but again, I was looking for that sparkle.

Then my brother’s wife happened to upgrade her ring and purchased an emerald from Cartier. I told my brother I happened to also be looking at an emerald. My brother says... don’t get one if you want flash and sparkle. He told me his wife is now constantly “wiping and cleaning” her ring hoping it will sparkle more. She regrets the emerald she got at Cartier as she was used to the sparkle of a round. An emerald is gorgeous but it’s a different look. It’s a step cut which I love. Staring at it is like staring into infinity. But you definitely so not get the shiny sparkle of a round.

This is just FYI to share my story.

Good luck to you and I do recommend you and your fiancé “windowshop” and try on different cuts in the size you want.

Thank you for posting your experience :))

Might it be that you just haven't found an exceptionally cut EC or asscher yet, which might come close to a round for sparkle and fire?

@Jimmianne might be able to offer her thoughts now she's had Mildred for a little while :)

And both @kenny and @Dancing Fire might be able to comment on Octavias' performance compared to MRBs and generic asschers!

I wonder if @Karl_K might be able to offer his thoughts on whether a 'standard' EC could ever be cut for sparkle and fire in particular?

They are out there, finding them is the not easy.

Many years ago when I was ring hunting with my then OH, I tried on a number of rings with round stones and styles within our budget, and none of them made me think 'that's the one', until the Sales Assistant suggested a three-stone EC, and it was literally love at first sight.

I have liked EC ever since, and my 40th birthday present to myself was an EC.

I went to Diamond House in Antwerp and was shown 3 stones by Rob the owner.

I decided I prefer the slightly longer EC than chubby one, all things being equal.

It is my pride and joy, now that it had been re-set a few years ago in its forever home, and I wear it whenever I can.

ECs are not common in high street jewellers in UK, let alone one that is over 1ct. I have to go up to big cities in order to ogle at them in the windows of high end jewellers.

And I have yet to come across anyone who wears an EC in my work and social circles.

As with other things in life, I know what I like and don't like, seldom follow trends. And EC is my favourite shape in diamonds as well as some CSs like Aqua.

Good luck with your search, OP, your OH has taste!

I adore emerald cuts if well cut! I have an elongated antique asscher which is kind of a cross between asscher and emerald cut, and I seriously love that diamond as much as my precision cut rounds! We just need to help you find a good one!

To OP, yes, buying online with trusted vendors, no worries.
People here are very good at looking at photos, specs and videos to translate what a diamond will look like in real life and they are very picky, which is extremely helpful.
Good luck with your search.

Emeralds sparkle differently I feel because their facets are longer.
Mine doesn’t do the “little sparkles” all the time that a round cut does, it does these “smack you in the face” big sparkles when the light hits it the right way.
Wouldn’t have it any other way.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your story. For some of these reasons, I encouraged my gf to try multiple shapes and sizes to get a feel for what she liked best. She originally thought she wanted a pear shape or an elongated cushion, but after trying almost every shape, she fell in love with emerald cut. I think it is the understated elegance that won her over. Even though I lean towards the more blingy shapes myself, I think emerald is perfect for her.

Thanks for sharing your story :)

While she gave some guidance, my girlfriend wants the ring to be somewhat of a surprise. I'm hoping she has that same "love at first sight" feeling when I finally open the box :)

My girlfriend has a tough time even throwing out / upgrading kitchen appliances that I buy for her, so I know that whatever stone I give her will likely be the only one she will ever wear. I'm so glad that this forum exists so I can be sure I'm choosing a stone that she'll be proud to wear for a lifetime.

I don't know about a slap in the face, but I'd like to knock her socks off :)
