I'm interested in an Emerald Cut but I don't know anything about them. Here is what I think I want.

At least 8 mm in length, more rectangular than square. Color: H-I-J and VS2 - SI1 (eye clean). I would like to keep the diamond cost under $10,000 and be as large as possible hoping to be around 1.75 - 2.00.

If you are bored and know something about Emerald cuts could you point out a few that you like and tell me why? Just in the study stage so any help or pointers would be great. I would love to learn a few things!!!

Thanks!

Hey! :wavey: I'd call Jonathan at Good Old Gold. He recently found me an excellent asscher and that cutter may even cut emerald cuts. But one thing is for certain, he can locate great cut stones!

AS far as those go, I think the I color one might be a possibility (need ASET) but I know I would not be happy with a K.

Thanks DS.. when you look at those aside from color is there something you are looking for that is more appealing? I saw in another post where a higher crown is preferred. I looked in the knowledge tab but the measurements are so broad it is much more difficult to nail down then say a RB.

The 5ct I tried in on Palm Beach was a K and it was spectacular. I thought EC's showed color more but this one blew my socks off of course at $225,000 it should. I'm wearing an M in my old cut so I thought going to J might be safe.. The K that DBL has reminds me of the glow of Kelpie's and that's about the most beautiful EC I've seen for someone who doesn't know much. The other one just peaked my interest because it looked nice in the pictures but I know IRL much different...

Mayk I love the DBL stone you linked. I have visited his site to gaze at the stone a few times :cheeky: Maybe you should call to ask about it?.
I'm also a huge fan of Kelpies antique EC.

I personally have a K EC, mine is quite small compared to the range you're shopping in but I rarely see color in my stone. The stones you tried on in Palm Beach were amazing! If you think a J or K might work for you give it a chance.

If I were looking for a stone that size I would do what DS suggested and call Jonathon. He has some amazing EC on videos that he chose for others.

Yes, I agree that J might be safe. I have seen Tacori Ering's I color EC and I could not detect any color. I just thought the DBL one showed a lot of color.

All I can tell you is that the videos sealed the deal for me (plus Jonathan's advice, of course, and he wouldn't have even shown me a bad one). Just look at this and imagine them elongated. But I think you will see how this makes it easier to decide! My stone was graded excellent for polish and symmetry, so well cut stones are out there if you look!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7SBfNGxTFE&list=UUEV7slr-i-VduBBnfv9MxhA (I bought the second from the left and would have considered the J but it did not fit the setting.)

It is hard to tell much from pictures. The ebay ring looked beautiful, but it may be that the table is too big on that one. It is just hard to tell. I do hope you can find one close to 2 cts. because I think EC's are beautiful in larger sizes! I think I could wear a 3 ct EC while I wouldn't go over 2 with a rb!

I loved your video.. I would have picked the same one.. interesting to see the comparison video he also did with an Emerald...

That eBay ring caught my attention and I've looked at 100 times..but I'm terrified to buy something like that off eBay.. just I can still gaze at it. They also have it listed on Etsy...

Have you seen this:

https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/emerald-cut-diamond

I'd try to stick with the 1A measurements or at least 1B. The ebay stone does have a table that is too large. And let me tell you, that was a lucky observation because I am relatively new to step cuts but absolutely love them!

(But the ebay one looks so great in that setting! So classic and beautiful!)

I was just there reading.. it's got so many ranges... so the depth is ok but the table and the ration of 1.345 not so ok... the large pictures look great but what happens with a larger table.. it just reflects back at you? versus reflecting light or creating flashes? :read:

Wow, that ebay ring sure does look pretty though!

DS... looking at this one... Just CUT not the color of the large spot right in front..

Table and crown what would you say..

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Emerald-cut/2.01-carat-J-color-SI1-clarity-sku-182483

Yes! See how beautiful that higher crown is where you can see the steps? I think you are getting much closer in terms of cut with that one!

I am going to have to add some caution to that cut grade chart, however. Because my asscher is all over the place when I look at the asscher chart, and you could see that it was excellent cut and had excellent polish and symmetry. I just think you want to see the upper steps and therefore will not have a huge table.

doesn't look like an eye clean stone.

If you read the thread I am aware it's not eye clean. I'm trying to understand cut. I ask DS if the table and crown height is what I should be looking for. Thanks for your input....

Did you by chance see this one at GOG?
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10027/
I spoke with Sara about it and she told me that she was in love with this emerald and that it was a great stone, however I chose another emerald from James Allen.
It's within your budget, it does have a tiny dark inclusion but I was told it is very hard to locate, the folks at GOG seemed to adore the stone. It couldn't hurt to inquire about it....

Thank you...I've looked at sooooo many.. I think the table is bigger than I want... Too bad because the size is nice and color...

You're welcome..... Maybe Jon can source you a few to take a look at. I would keep checking JA, I believe they are still working on adding stones onto their new site. Somehow I got really lucky and the first stone I put on hold ended up being really nice. I haven't seen it in person yet, its due to arrive next week. Good luck with your search!!

I'm thinking of giving it a spin... To see what it looks like... :Up_to_something: the Medium blue interests me... I can't help myself!

DO IT,

DO IT!!! :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

You know you waaaaaaaaaNNNNNNNaa!!! :Up_to_something:

Remember - you'll be a far better human being with a lovely EC ring - I can feel the growth already, just knowing you are considering it!

Ohhhh I'm soooo excited! I just checked their return policy. 7 days for a refund less the shipping charge. If you are keeping your gorgeous oec bezel ring then this could be an alternate ring or RHR. Maybe you won't mind the color. I was told you see more color in a step cut stone but honestly think the opposite might be true. Can't wait to see what you think of it! Take lots of pictures :naughty:

I dunno anything about emeralds! But I just wanted to say that I am sooo excited for you and that I will be following your journey for your dream emerald and learning a lot too! Good luck!!!

p.s.- I would prefer a smaller table too :)

I think you've already made a decision, but I've drooled over the DBL K emerald several times...it's a gorgeous stone and I love the open culet! Heck, if you like the open culet and find a stone that has everything you want *except* that, I'd consider having it cut...probably wouldn't lose more than a pt. or two...

Can't wait to hear your in person impressions! If I were going to get another ring (and boo-hoo, it will never happen), I'd be going for an emerald cut with an open culet.....

You lucky, lucky girl!

I'm a trainwreck.. worrying about if I should or shouldn't do this.. now or not. We put a deposit down on property this past weekend.. building my husband's dream house.. worried I will never see another piece of bling for years to come :nono: ... so I woke up at 1:30 in a cold sweat... totally stressed...

Enerchi.. You are evil woman!!! and you know it...

Working through things this morning....

Huge light leakage right down the middle. :knockout:

http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/loose-colorless-diamond-159ct-k-vvs1-emerald-cut-gia-vintage-feel-r4884
See darkness at the edges, which I suspect is leakage as well.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-32CT-ESTATE-VINTAGE-EMERALD-CUT-DIAMOND-ENGAGEMENT-WEDDING-RING-GIA-CERT-PLAT-/380549212476?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14133%26meid%3D5150239283786216068%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1085%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D380549212476%26
Huge table at 71% contributing to the glassiness.

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Emerald-cut/2.01-carat-J-color-SI1-clarity-sku-182483
Huge leakage in the center. Look for something without the blackness.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10027/
Looks all right but both the table and depth are large, so you end up with a smaller stone than you should.

Chrono :wavey: thank you... Can you find one any size you like. I would love to see. DBL is making a video for review. The rest I'm just trying to learn,

This one has Karl's blessing, also from JA. Although it has one very tiny strip of leakage, the rest of the EC is bright and "lit up", meaning it is returning light back to the eye, aka great light performance. Steps are evenly spaced and very symmetrical. I don't recall the stats but it has a nice smallish table and depth was pushing close to 70% though. Again, a smaller table does not guarantee high crown. I've seen too many ECs with "perfect" table and depth stats that look like dogs.
