Emerald Cuts

This one has Karl's blessing, also from JA. Although it has one very tiny strip of leakage, the rest of the EC is bright and "lit up", meaning it is returning light back to the eye, aka great light performance. Steps are evenly spaced and very symmetrical. I don't recall the stats but it has a nice smallish table and depth was pushing close to 70% though. Again, a smaller table does not guarantee high crown. I've seen too many ECs with "perfect" table and depth stats that look like dogs.

Nice thank you....

Chrono that is gawwwgeous!

I miss the old lighting setup soooo much.

Me too! It was so easy to predict the ASET on it too. Black areas are leakage, white areas will show up as red and the rest will be green.

New picture... I like it... A lot!

I like it too! The steps are even and well spaced (good faceting!!) The colour appeals to me against the skin tone and its a good rectangular shape that appeals to my eye... I'm a +1 that you should get it! ;))

And the vote from the "Chief Instigator"... weighs in heavily!!!! :D

1-800-WE-ENABLE... direct line from my mouth to your ear!! Waddaya wanna hear??? :Up_to_something:

Seriously - it is a BEAUTIFUL stone - you'd have to see it IRL and on your skin and perhaps mounted in a temp setting ( ;)) ) but that is gorgeous and great size for the cost. It is beautiful - I'm wishing you a boat load of dust that your preloved items sell and this puppy will be on your finger in no time!!!

DUST - sell the Mikimoto's!
DUST - sell the ERD bezel Trannie (well, I'd rather it was in your will and I was the designated beneficiary... but I'll put my name on THIS EC instead - okey dokey?? we good with the revised will??? Everybody on board with me here??) :D

No video? I am hesitant because I see something but would prefer to be sure first.

:wavey: Hi Chrono.. Today I should get a video. I'll post.. Thank you!!!

Hi MayK, I'm excited for you!I love emerald cuts (what kind of diamond don't I love lol) and the one you are considering is so beautiful. They are one of the most elegant cuts IMO and I wish you the best of luck in getting the diamond of your dreams!
(As an aside I recently tried on an elegant 3 stone emerald cut ring from Leon and it almost made me want to switch to emerald cut too).

oooh!!! a video is coming today! That's exciting! I can't wait to see this stone in action - looking forward to the post! :appl:

Oh my.... The culet! Beautiful!!!

Edit: I don't know about everyone else but I love it! DBL opening up the culet just won me over! I can never resist an open culet :)

Do you like it Mayk? What are your opinions about it? Does it make your heart beat faster?

Hmm. I can't get it to play! :(

At the top, it is written mobile / desktop. Click on desktop to play the video.

Since I did not reply to this before the server went down and lost a bunch of replies, I'll share my opinion now. I'll be honest about the emerald diamond. Is it pretty? Yes. Is it a great performer? No. The steps are gorgeous but the light performance is lacking. It should be flashier, more dispersive and sparklier, even for a step cut.

Hi Chrono,
Thank you for sharing your opinion.
Can you please define "light performance"?

Why is my post gone? I posted right after the video... Is it the whole server crash?

ETA: Nevermind! Sorry, I saw the posts in the server crash thread!
Thanks for trying to fix it so fast!

I truly am interested in how people define the term "Light Performance"

I should have posted how I define the term:
Light performance: The manner in which light in which light moves through a diamond.

Does a round diamond have better light performance than a step cut diamond?
By some measures, the answer would be unquestionably yes. However, by other measures the answer would be unquestionably no.
For someone that loves emerald cuts, the light performance of an emerald cut is superior to that of a round brilliant.
My point is, interpreting how light moves through a diamond is quite a subjective matter.
This can even be true of comparing two emerald cut diamonds-which may indeed have different light performance characteristics.
A good example would be Crown height. Some, like a high Crown height, and some like a stone that has a better spread.

I've defined what light performance means to me in my earlier post - flashiness, dispersiveness and sparkliness as per what it should look like for that particular cut, so in this case, as it pertains to a step cut, not a round or other cut shape. I did not make any comparisons as to the crown height or spread as that pertains to the cut, not light performance.

Thanks Chrono- do you see it as a subjective judgment?

Pretty! I can see a little tint in the hand shot, but it looks icy white in the video. Which one is more accurate IRL?

Thanks Laila!
In most normal room lighting, the tint is hard to notice, bit of course sometimes the K color comes through.
I can see the tint pretty clearly towards the end of the video- around 1:40.
That's shot in a lightbox.

When comparing a well cut to an average cut round, is their performance difference subjective? The same applies to step cuts - when comparing a well cut to an average cut step cut diamond, is their performance difference subjective?

What I find interesting is when using the Knowledge Tools for Emerald Cuts as a "guidance" everything about this diamond falls into the ideal/excellent cut range. The color of course is warmer than some will like but the medium blue should in some ways lighten the diamond if it still works in EC's as it does in rounds. My appeal is the culet and the warmth. I'm going to see the diamond in person because I think it's interesting enough to want to pay the shipping to review it. It may be when I get it.. it's not right for me.. and I dropped by a local store today to try on a few in the 2 ct. range.. because I had only tried on the very large... I think I have an idea about what I want.. but I'm not going to know for sure until I see it in real life....

Thanks for all the comments and advice I appreciate the time you've taken to provide input! :appl:

Mayk,
I used to think the way you do too; I shopped for ECs using the emerald cut guide as the baseline for selecting what is good and what isn't. It turns out that it is indeed just the baseline only. It does not guarantee great performance. Let's use rounds for example where knowing the crown and pavilion angles are sometimes insufficient, how much more can only knowing the depth and table percentages tell you? Even less. I've seen excellent performers (sparkles like there is no tomorrow) and average performers (nice but does not hold a candle to the excellent performers). It's not to say the average ones aren't pretty but once you've seen the excellent performers, there's no going back. Medium blue fluorescence will have little to no impact on the colour outdoors. Only strong or very strong and even then, not all the time. You like the warmth and culet, so that's at least two factors in this EC's favour. :))

One really amazing thing about emerald cuts is that they can be so counter-intuitive. For example, the stone under discussion has a relatively shallow crown, yet as you move the stone the crown seems to pick up light just like a steeper one. IOW- although the steps on top are not "steep", they look like they are.
As I examine it, the scintillation, flash, and dispersion are excellent.

About Medium Blue Fluorescence: In some cases, MB stones will show quite an effect in daylight.
The stone under discussion certainly shows the effect. The stone looks fairly colorless in most photos, other than the ones in the lightbox, where you can cleary see the K color. Most of the video was taken in an environment where the sun has an effect.
That's why you can see the color in some places in the video, and not in other places.

My experience after looking at many thousands of Medium Blue diamonds is that there is no way to make any sort of broad statement that will be accurate for all stones given this grade by GIA.
Even the grade itself is far less consistent by nature than color grading ( for example)
I've seen some Medium stones that looked stronger than other Strong Blues.
Where does medium end and Strong start?

I'll have it this weekend and I'll take lots of pictures before I ship it back.... :appl: :appl: :appl:

I can't wait to see it on your hand - to view the size and how the K colour reacts to your skin! Its a beauty in that video! I hope you like it .... and then we can plan the setting magic!! oooh - FUN!!! :naughty:
