Hello all -- I am in the beginning of my search to my engagement ring. With the high-standard I set for myself (see my profile pic), it is going to be a bit of a project to design my e-ring. I am mostly interested in a 3-stone ring with either an emerald or elongated antique cushion cut center stone. I'd love to hear more feedback from you.

I have a ~$80-110K budget depending on if I trade my current ring. I want a center stone that looks as big or bigger than my current asscher which is 8.89x8.83 table size. So I think I need to find a well-cut stone at least in the 4ct+ range. I want very good clarity (no black crystal especially), ideally a G color (mine now is J), so a 5ct is prob not realistic with my budget? Does G and H a big color gap? I will be too close to my current ring I think. Emerald three stone.PNGbridal-engagement-rings-antique-cushion-engagement-ring-7371577753688.jpg

What are people's thoughts and knowledge about elongated antique cushion? I've never seen one in person. Is it more chunky than an emerald? How is the light performance comparison between these two cuts? Does antique cushion hides color well? It looks like not very good at hiding inclusions?

Here are the pics of the two ring I really like. Looking forward to your response!

Get a custom-cut elongated antique cushion from Distinctive Gem!

If you're unsure if you like the cut, maybe see if they don't mind you ordering and returning a smaller one, or if they could make some videos for you?

I personally would go with the antique cushion over the emerald solely because you already have a step cut and variety is the spice of life.

Oh wait I see you may be trading in your asscher? I personally would not if you could get a ring you'd be satisfied without doing that, because I like having options. BUT if you are a "one ring to rule them all" type, then I guess which you pick will depend on which you like more, and having lived with the asscher for a while, you know whether or not you love step cuts.

I don’t have much to add here except I saw this today and thought of your list - it’s available!

Thank you so much for the finding! Now looking at it, I dont really like the flash pattern of this cut... It looks, a bit messy and empty at the same time... I dont know how to best describe it...Also, my J is quite white face up, but I just want an even colorless stone. =)

I have an enlongated antique cushion, you do not see many of them about. Its a very different facet pattern to the one you posted though, that doesn’t look that antique to me. Here is mine, I’ve tried to find a photo that shows its facet pattern and color accurately it’s an N SI2, in my opinion the cut does hide the colour and inclusions well.
I think both cuts would be beautiful though from my understanding an Emerald could potentially show both inclusions and color more readily than an emerald cut. You have a fantastic budget, I’m sure you will find a special stone.

This is a great suggestion, distracts!

:kiss2::kiss2::kiss2: that’s pretty. 12cm? That’s quite a size for the price… how long does the custom cut process take? What if I don’t like the stone later due to clarify or color reason? Does he make it into a ring too? Thank you.

Somrthing like this stone is going to make this decision difficult. I was really leaning more toward an emerald…

Keep in mind that it is a custom cut LGD instead of a mined/earth grown diamond.
You'll have to contact Jon (Rhino) at Distinctive Gem to get clarification on his policies...and maybe ask if he is able to custom cut (or recut an existing elongated shape) earth grown diamond into a vintage elongated cushion, if you are leaning towards the look over an Emerald cut.

Those prices would be for a lab-grown diamond, but he also does natural diamonds, pricing just varies a lot more depending on so many factors. But I'd definitely reach out if you like the cut.

Hello! Oooohhhh fun project :kiss2: Material Good in NYC is super high end and reputable, and often has "ready to buy" emerald and cushion rings within the budget and size you specified (all GIA graded - call for info). Here is a super pretty one available now:

If the aset is accurate it over reacts to obstruction.

EC is blah.

Alright, with the dimensions of your asscher, I'm estimating roughly 78 square mm of face up, and was trying to find something emerald cut in the 4ct range that would be substantially larger, and failed.

That said, with the addition of side stones, the enlongated look of the emerald in combination with those could probably trick your eye in to thinking it was larger.

I did find what I believe to be a gorgeous 4.02 ct emerald cut on Victor Canera's website in your budget , F, VS2 (I doubt you could see the needle with the naked eye but that would need to be checked):

In my opinion, and H colored stone would still be much whiter than J, and give you more options for going larger within your budget, so I would not dismiss an H as a possiblility.

EC is blah.

Over reacts?

Really? Why is the EC blah? I thought its quite lively? It is a very shallow cut. The GIA report is "cut-cornered rectangular step cut" with a 58% table and 54.4% depth. Its E and Vs1.

Thank you!

Thank you so much! I couldnt see the GIA report for some reason of the VC stone you mentioned here. I agree, that my current stone has quite a big face... I can stretch my budget to $100K for the ring if needed. I want to try to sell mine at a good price (vs. fire sell) so won't be able to increase the budget further.

How is this one looking? https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/4.39-ct-F-VS1-Affinity-Cut-Emerald-Diamond/D44544718?rfr=search

Generic emerald? Thanks.

way to much blue in aset == over reacts to obstruction.

EC just looks blah
to much finger visible thu the stone to often.

"to much finger visible thu the stone to often." this explains! lol =) thanks.

clcat120, the rings in your avatar are very beautiful. A brief description?

I couldn't see the GIA report either for the Victor Canera one, but the video looks good to my un-trained eye. If you end up liking it enough, I'd send and email and let them know you'd like to see the GIA report.

The diamond you posted doesn't have a great video, but it seems there are long facets right in the middle surrounding the culet that are dark too much (I am in no way an emerald cut expert, at all, so what my eyes see may be interpreted incorrectly). Could just be the video, could be light leakage under the table.

It's a 3.62 center J color asscher stone with VS1 clarity. Small pinpoints and barely visible under the loupe. It is a shallow cut with 67% table and only 62.5% depth. So the spread it huge. It has pretty good light performance with such a shallow cut. Here is a video I took recently (right out of a swim in the ocean too!) It set my bar high now, unfortunately.

Some dealer offers me $25K and I laughed him off!

They are very different cuts IMHO, and being a fan of step cuts especially ECs, I would opt for an EC every time as I love to see big flashes.

DK :))

I reached out and here is the report for the stone. https://www.gia.edu/report-check?reportno=6217870604

I dont know how to read this 44.1 crown angle and 56.9 pavilion angle... the table size and depth seems to be some guideline on EC from other @Karl_K post.

To be honest instead of the shotgun approach I would contact a vendor in the NYC diamond district and make them work for your business by pulling stones that might be suitable in and ASET and video images for the top 3 or 4.
They can not work on as tight of margins as some of the drop shippers but your getting a lot more also.

I think you need to decide what type of stone you want. An elogated cushion and an EC give quite a different sparkle pattern. As you clearly know, step cuts give you that winking mirror reflection. A elongated cushion provides a very different look. Do you mean you want an antique cut cushion or a modern cut cushion? I think you need to do some homework on youtube. Look up antique cushions and see if you like their reflective patterns. Look up more modern cut longer cushions and see if you prefer those instead. It will help you determine what you truly want to see on your finger in the long run.

This is a good video that compares modern to antique cut diamonds.

I am relatively set on emerald, asscher, and cut corner rectangular. I like the cut corner rectangular the most, but they are prob the hardest to find. There seems to be more asscher (squared emerald) in the market, and price seems to be generally cheaper than emerald. I went to Kwiat and saw some emerald in person, but even the 5ct looks maybe the same size as my asscher now! =(

Finance and I agreed that If I trade my ring, we can go up to a $120-125K budget...

I really love this stone I saw on Blue Nile but out of the budget. The other similar one may be too "dirty"?

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD14604306 -- The more expensive one

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD13346701 -- I really love the look of this stone, but I am very concerned about the inclusion... Also is the super strong florescence gonna look milky in a D color? I am generally fine with a "blue stone"

Have you seen this antique asscher?

It’s a lovely stone but I’m only interested in H+ color this time. Thx
