Hello,

Up here in Ontario I was recently at a store in a mall (Ben Moss Jewellers) and they have this ring:

http://www.benmoss.com/rings/engage...canadian-certified-white-gold-engagement-ring

My girlfriend is in love with this when she tried it on (and has tried it on a few times since).

I have a limited time offer to purchase @ $4,199.

At that price, would this seem like a good purchase? I don't really want to spend that much but would I be crazy to pass that up?

sounds like THE ring for her, and they are budging considerably..I'd pull the trigger for the pure sake of making the GF happy

you can certainly get a much better diamond for less money. The diamond in that setting is I1 clarity and i am not sure who certified the diamond but it is not GIA or AGS.
Here is one that is much nicer!

its shouldn't be hard to find a similar setting.

Tell us a budget you would like to stay around and we can find you other options.

I would not buy an I1 diamond for an engagement ring because it is almost guaranteed to have eye visible inclusions. The colour is also listed as H/I, which tells me that this diamond doesn't come with a lab memo. In short, this means that the diamond is likely to be of lower colour and clarity than stated if graded by GIA. You can do MUCH better than this. Are you sold on only Canadian diamonds or are you open to buying a non-Canadian diamond?

I was hoping to stick around the $3,000 - $3,500 max.

I agree that the I1 clarity is on the low end which why i'm hesitant and thinking that i'm overpaying for what I get.

Not tied to Canadian Diamond at all. The GF is drawn to it for the "conflict free" aspect. I know most diamonds on decent sites like blue nile or james allen etc.are conflict free anyways.

0.71 ct J SI1 for $1.8K, leaving you $1K for the setting and $500 for tax. Medium blue fluorescence is a plus but I would inquire with JA on how eye clean it is in person.

0.62 ct I VS2 for $1.7K but slightly better colour and clarity in lieu of an every so slightly smaller size than the above. Remember, it's not just the ct weight but the face up measurement.

I dont mind sacrificing .09 on the ct weight if im getting a better quality stone. I am liking that second link so far.

I'd love to get a H&A level cut while staying in the .6-.7 range but it would eliminate the budget for the setting.

I wish I had better images of the setting to show. Baiscally, its a pave style setting and the split shank rises high enough to form the prongs. The mounting of the diamond allows a clear side view without having basket covering it etc.

I tried to find out if they would sell the setting separate but I got no reply.

I know she would be very happy with it but since ive been researching over the past couple months, I wouldn't be happy paying that amount of money to end up with just an I1 HI stone (even though it is canadian which warrants a premium).

I don't mind that one. I like the other one on the site that has diamonds up both sides for the prongs not just one side. It's 1225 I believe.

The only downside to that setting is the fact it pinches when it cross crosses the shank. If it was just side by side and splits up I think that may be a contender.

Thanks!

That Gabrielny site has a very large selection of settings, holy.

I think i'm a big fan of this one.

what do you guys think?

edit: this one is .75 min center too. officially depressed now. lol.

Since GOG carries the Gabriel setting, why not ask them if the 0.62 t will be able to fit into it. It's pretty close to the minimum required size. As for budget, can you stretch it a little?

Don't worry! Good Old Gold sets the diamond anyway and they will be able to make it fit. DON'T look at the "min" carat weight. Also, all Gabriel rings are made to order, so they can accommodate minimal design changes. Gabriel settings are lovely and are priced really good.

I think GOG will give you a 20% discount on the setting if you purchase the diamond through them. Just call/email Sarah and Marie and they will take care of you.

Since GOG carries some Gabriel settings, even if they do not show the ones I linked here on their site, chances are they can get them correct?

I was also looking at their policy, looks like they only allow bank wire payments for outside the US. No CC allowed. Also charge additional 100 ontop to ship/insure.

I must say, I am a bit tentative on ordering this type of purchase online with no physical store to go to to see it or have it serviced for cleaning and what not.

The frustrating part is that I was in a local store that carries the Gabriel & Co settings and the manager of the store was simply quoting prices way above my budget.

My budget was set hoping to get a nice setting with at least a 0.6 center stone. Based on the prices found online such as James allen or Blue Nile, I could do this no problem.

The store I went to quoted me a GIA cert diamond Si2, H, 0.5 weight with a Very Good cut for $2,200. This seems rediculous. A fast search on my blue nile app gives me minimum 0.70 Si2 H Ideal Cut stones for the same price.

I prefer to order in store but seriously, I do not think that is worth $1,500-2,000 to do so.

GOG has a physical store in NY that you can visit. He will also take videos for the customer's benefit in trying to choose which one is the right diamond. Cleaning can be done in any store for free. Many stores are more than happy to do this for you while you browse, in hopes that you will purchase something from them one day.

Ive seen a lot of people say that but when i hear thst i think this. Ignoring the fact its online, wouldnt you want the most information you csn grt on something yiu are spending so much money on? These vendors, especially gog, provide you eith a tone of light performance info that most local jewelers just wont. And by buying online you are avoiding some overhead of local stores. Its the same concept as amazon. They dont have to run lots of stores so the savings are passed to you. I know spending money online is scary by cause people try to warn you of potential fraud with ebay and things like that. But this isnt just some guy selling diamonds from his basement, they are actual companies that wouldnt benifit from shafting you out of money.... It would be bad for business

Ther 'may be some room for negotiation but generally if you wish to purchase from a brick and mortar store, you are going to pay a premium to do so. They have more overhead costs than the online outfits and do less business overall so have to charge higher prices to make up for it. You can always have your ring cleaned at any jeweler, and usually have the prongs checked too. I get mine checked at my local jeweler rather than the jeweler I bought from just because my local jeweler is five minutes away and the place I bought my ring is fifteen minutes away.
