First, let me say hello to everyone. I am new to this forum and have a few questions about buying an engagement ring.

(1) Please advice if this price from my jeweler is fair or way too expensive. I am not a cheapskate. I am willing to pay reasonable / fair market price, people have to make profile for living.

Ring Spec:
3 Stone Tiffany Setting Size 6 Platinum– $500
Main: 1 Ct. diamond – $5500
Round Shape
H Color
VS1 Clarity
Cut – Excellent
Polish – Excellent
Symmetry – Excellent
Hearts and Arrows Stamped on the GIA Packing
Fluorescent: None
GIA certified
Laser marked on diamond and certificate
I saw very sharp and symmetric Hearts and Allows under the scope, color is very red, not much white
Sides: $500
0.25 Ct. = 0.5 Ct. Total
H Color – Matching Color

Total = $500(ring) + $5500(Main) + $500(Sides) = $6,500.-

(2) He told me I can upgrade the main stone from H to G color with similar spec for $1200. Does the price different sound reasonable?

(3) He had shown me both G & H on white paper and under daylight lamp and I saw VERY SLIGHT color variation between two. He told me I will not notice the different between G & H under normal wearing scenarios so don’t worry about the upgrade and save money for other expenses. Am I too anxious about the color grade?

(4) Should I trade clarity for color (in similar price range)?
Example: upgrade to G or better color and downgrade to SI1/2 with other characters similar

Thanks for everyone’s insight.

you can do a search here to find out general pricing for stones with the specs you are looking at. I personally would go down in clarity b/c I wouldn''t want to pay for what I can''t see. A nice eyeclean SI1 or SI2 would be super for me. Color is also personal. My old stone was a g/h and I loved it. If I get another round I will probably opt for another H but would also consider going down lower if it meant I could get a bigger stone

.

a J may be too low in color for you but you should check out the J colored stone in platinum thread here just to get an idea of how they look next to sides etc.

good luck and welcome to Pricescope

$5500 sounds like a very fair price for a H VS1 true H&A stone. do you have more infor on the center stone?.

I am mostly a lurker on these boards, but thought I would throw in my 2 cents ...

I think that the ring you have picked out will be BEAUTIFUL and I think it''s a very good price you are paying for it considering you are buying from the jeweler. My boyfriend and I spent months researching rings and diamonds before we found what we want and is now currently being made custom at the jeweler! To me, I really wanted a *nice* stone - we got a VS1 G 1.43 and it is just jaw-droppingly beautiful. I think that if I got the ring you described there I would be awestruck!

But - just my two cents!!

I figured the price is about right. Some retailers are few hundred dollars cheaper but my friend told me this jeweler's assembling and craftmanship is good and it is the reason I buy from him.

Diamond price is finely quantified by the physical properties so I get what I paid for. But I don't want to pick up an ugly ring from a poorly skilled labour. I saw some diamond rings in some retailers are poorly assembled and not buffed very nicely since Platinum is not as easy to handle as white gold.
