Hello pricescope,

I just registered and have a question. My SO and I have been talking about engagement lately, so naturally I have given my preferences some thoughts. I think I would prefer an eternity band over a solitaire for two reasons:

1) I only like bigger solitairs around 1ct, which are a little out of our budget right now and

2) I am really not a ring person and think a band would not annoy me as much when being worn daily.

Now, where can I start looking online? We are in Germany, where diamond prices are ridiculous, plus it seems to be rather difficult to find something in yellow gold.

And last but not least...what''s a tactful way to let him know?

Thanks :)

We''ve actually had quite a few clients select an eternity band as an engagement ring, it is more common than you might imagine. I think that the best way to let your fiance know that you prefer this option is simply to tell him so and provide your explanations... Most of us men just want to know what you want (at this moment in time, I''ve learned that last part from my own fiance).

Where to look... There are tons of examples scattered amongst the pages here on Show Me The Ring! Just cruise the forum and save examples of whatever interests you to your computer and email them to the vendors of your choice for a quote. Be sure to include your ring size, preference for the width of the gem stones, metal preference, etc. so that whoever you decide to work with can provide you with the most accurate estimate possible. Happy hunting!

www.signedpieces.com/facets.cfm has a great reputation here so check them out. I'm not sure from your post whether you want YG or not. Facets carries only platinum diamond bands.

A way to let him know - "Honey, I really like this eternity band (show website) rather than a solitaire."

If your financial situation improves in a few years, you can buy the 1ct solitaire and wear it with the eternity band.

Yes, I absolutely want yellow gold, I don''t wear silver, white gold or platinum. I just found that yellow gold with diamonds seems to be hard to find.

Ah, I''m not set on the 1ct stone, in fact I could do without a ring, but that''s an option SO refuses to consider.

What about a 5 stone ring? That would be easier to find in yellow gold. Also, I find that many eternity bands are not that comfortable and kind of "pokey" between your fingers.

personally, i like for there to be more metal showing if it''s in yellow or rose gold. you might want to look at channel or bezel set bands, or something similar to the tiffany novo band.

do you like vintage-style rings?

single stone eternity bands

do you want a thin or a thick band? 2-3 mm tends to be fairly standard for wedding bands, but the larger the carat weight, the wider the band...depending on the band''s design and carat weight, it might be uncomfortable. i think the shared-prong setting is less comfortable than channel or bezel set. i wear my eternity band every day and find it easier to wear than my e-ring.

I wore a channel set half eternity band in place of an e-ring for years. Very comfortable, and easy to wear.

Channel set is a good idea - easier to wear/more comfy. I''ve seen some recent ones here with princesses or baguettes, which look quite nice.

I love that idea! I think they did that more often in the 1950''s... I think? Can you buy the ring from some where like Tiffany''s ( don''t they have a set price worldwide? ). Good luck! And I love your creative thinking!

I think it''s a fine idea--I also wanted an eternity band as an e-ring, but DH wanted to go the traditional route, so I got one as a wedding band.

If you are not a jewelry person (I''m not either), then you might want to heed LitigatorChick''s advice and not go with a shared prong. I got a shared prong, then had to make it half eternity because it was uncomfy. I just got a second eternity band that is channel set and it is MUCH more comfortable. Try some on and see how you feel comfort wise.

I was going to suggest the same thing, to consider a channel set eternity instead. Mine is platinum and is so smooth, I don''t feel anything at all.

i checked the return policy, and it says that anything considered a ''special order'' is not returnable. you should make sure exactly what constitutes a ''special order'' before making a decision either way. when i ordered my eternity band, it was considered a ''special order'' and non-returnable because the shop didn''t have my size in stock. therefore, it had to be made in my size....

my eternity band 1.54ctw has H-I SI stones, and i don''t really have a problem with the color or clarity for such small stones.

i''m not familiar with this company, so i can''t say either way about the quality of the stones. cut is really important with eternity bands because you want maximum sparkle....

maybe someone else more familiar with this shop will chime in...

Thanks! I will check if this would be a special order, it says it''s in stock and available in any metal choice, so I hope not. And even if anything is perfect, I still need to break the news to my SO :)

I think your SO might be secretly relieved if you tell him! I was in the same shoes as you - I wanted something I could wear for life. Since eternity rings cost much less than solitaires of the same caratage and provide more finger coverage for the buck, I think it''s a great idea to get an eternity as an e-ring when you''re younger and starting out, then get the solitaire you want later, when you''re more settled. Maybe it''s just me, but I''d rather have a 1 ct. eternity than a 1/2 ct. solitaire for the same price. Sure, it''s not traditional, but it''s a wise and prudent solution. As long as your SO is cool with it, it''s a win-win!

However, eternities can be uncomfortable, especially in the large caratages. If you''re not used to wearing chunky rings on your finger, I really agree with everyone else''s idea to get either a channel set or less than half eternity. Especially if you work with your hands a lot. Eternity rings get dirty rather quickly!

Oh, just one more thing: could sapphires or other gemstones a possible contender for a solitaire, if you''d really rather have a solitaire?

Me too. Plus, we are in Germany. Around here, engagement rings are rarely ever given, and if so, they are mostly the future wedding bands (read, a plain gold band). The fat diamond solitaire just isn''t done very much, so it''s not even untraditional. In his culture, you do give rings, but there are no requierements how they have to look, so I really hope he''s open to my ideas.

I mentioned rubies or a pink or padparadja sapphire, but he isn''t too fond of the idea. Plus, I really think a band would annoy me less than a solitaire. He can give me the solitaire for a bigger anniversary, so I am not forced to wear it daily ;) Do you think 1,5 carat would be too much for a 5.5 finger? I''ve tried to find out how bulky it would be. I have small hands and would not like something too overwhelming for daily wear. At the moment, I''m a grad student, so all the work I have to do with my hands is turning pages and typing stuff on the computer

Yes, that''s very pretty, thanks for the link :)

Welcome to PS. I''m new too!

The only other thing I would strongly recommend before you order anything is to go to some local stores and just try on a bunch of bands. You may have done this already, but you may change your mind about a style and/or size depending upon how comfortable the band is on your finger. This is a really personal choice and if you like shared prong bands, you may find a half band of stones or a specific carat weight is your preference depending upon the comfort level and how it looks on your size finger. The other posters mentioned channel set bands, which if you find one you love would withstand a fair amount of abuse and are typically very comfortable to wear.

Good luck on your search! Take your time and find something you absolutely LOVE!

Eternity bands as e-rings are not too common in the states....but I saw a showstopper once at a VW dealership. Just a simple band of diamonds, and not huge...but so well cut you could see it shine across a room. She just conveyed a classic elegance with that ring. Oh, didn''t Monroe have an eternity ring?

!

Just came sooner than we thought.

We got a channel set eternity w/ diamonds -- smallish 2mm which is very elegant and unobtrusive for my hand.

I had the whole plan of then going back for the honker solitaire which also happened sooner then we thought.

I love my WB and get lots of compliments on it.

Great idea.

Indeed she did, Audrey Hepburn also wore an eternity ring as her engagement ring, can''t get much classier than her - in my opinion!
