Eternity band - diamond sizes

Hello everyone,

I am getting a custom eternity wedding band made. It will be channel set in platinum with princess cut diamonds, (2 ctw) in a size 6. I thought 2 ctw would be a decent size as I have tried on sizes ranging from 1-1.85 ctw and liked the wider ones.

My engagement ring's shank is 2.1mm wide, so most of the ones I tried on were at least the same width if not larger than my ring. I figured that bumping up the carat weight a little would ensure that it would be wider (substantial on its own, but not too wide that my fiance would think it was competing with the E-ring).

I am a bit concerned because I received the CAD drawing and I thought the diamonds looked a bit anemic, but I wasn't sure if it was because it's only a rendering. I asked my jeweller what the diamond sizes would be and he said 1.9mm with a total width of 2.1mm with the metal (I asked for thin channel walls). There would be about 40 diamonds at 0.05-0.06 carats each. Does that sound right? The reason why I question it is that it seems like it will be thinner than most of the rings I tried on.

Take tiffany's for example:
http://www.tiffany.ca/Shopping/Item.aspx?sku=GRP01549&cid=288152&mcat=148204

This one is 0.93 ctw, but it's 2.6mm wide. (My jeweller said they use 0.3 pt diamonds, which are 1.6mm) I tried this on and thought the diamonds were too small.

I wanted my ring to be similar to this Facets Collection one, if not a touch wider with the diamonds:

This one is 1.78 ctw, 28 diamonds, 3.1mm wide. (My jewller said they use 0.7 pt diamonds, which are 2.2mm)

Should I be asking him to use larger point diamonds, like 0.7 with my eternity band, or does 0.5-0.6 sound right? I know that mathematically 0.05 carats x 40 = 2 carats, but I don't understand how other rings would be using larger .pt sizes for a ring of equivalent carat weight. I just need some reassurance or advice. The jeweller asked me to visit on Friday. Hopefully I will get to see the diamonds then.

Thank you for your time.

Would you consider ordering from Facets? That would seem to be the best way to get what you want. You could order two sizes and see which you liked best. I am a little hesitant to have something like that made when there are ones available that can be tried on so that you know you are getting exactly what you want.

Hey DS,

I'm not sure if I can order from Facets now seeing as I've given the jeweller a 50% deposit and the ball has already started rolling. I did consider Facets at first, but for some reason I was turned off of having to send a check/money order/wire money to them since I live in Canada and they will not accept my credit card.

Thank you.

If the diamonds are 1.9mm wide your band will most definitely be thicker than 2.1mm - probably closer to the 2.5-2.6 of the Tiffany, if you asked for particularly thin channel walls. Walls 0.1mm thick each would be *impossibly* thin.

I believe the Facets bands are die struck... if you jeweller will be casting your band thicker walls are probably a better idea - cast pieces are weaker, relatively, so a little extra metal to add sturdiness and hold shape is a benefit.

Hi Yssie,

Yes, I didn't really scrutinize how big 0.1mm would be. I'll talk to him and make sure that the walls aren't TOO thin. I like the proportions of the Tiffany band.

Cheers!

I meant that 0.1mm would be physically impossibly thin, so that's most definitely not in question.

I see. Just for future reference, I have wired money to reputable vendors here with no problems. I wouldn't worry about it with Facets, either, but I understand the inconvenience.
