Hello everyone,
I am getting a custom eternity wedding band made. It will be channel set in platinum with princess cut diamonds, (2 ctw) in a size 6. I thought 2 ctw would be a decent size as I have tried on sizes ranging from 1-1.85 ctw and liked the wider ones.
My engagement ring's shank is 2.1mm wide, so most of the ones I tried on were at least the same width if not larger than my ring. I figured that bumping up the carat weight a little would ensure that it would be wider (substantial on its own, but not too wide that my fiance would think it was competing with the E-ring).
I am a bit concerned because I received the CAD drawing and I thought the diamonds looked a bit anemic, but I wasn't sure if it was because it's only a rendering. I asked my jeweller what the diamond sizes would be and he said 1.9mm with a total width of 2.1mm with the metal (I asked for thin channel walls). There would be about 40 diamonds at 0.05-0.06 carats each. Does that sound right? The reason why I question it is that it seems like it will be thinner than most of the rings I tried on.
Take tiffany's for example:

This one is 0.93 ctw, but it's 2.6mm wide. (My jeweller said they use 0.3 pt diamonds, which are 1.6mm) I tried this on and thought the diamonds were too small.
I wanted my ring to be similar to this Facets Collection one, if not a touch wider with the diamonds:

This one is 1.78 ctw, 28 diamonds, 3.1mm wide. (My jewller said they use 0.7 pt diamonds, which are 2.2mm)
Should I be asking him to use larger point diamonds, like 0.7 with my eternity band, or does 0.5-0.6 sound right? I know that mathematically 0.05 carats x 40 = 2 carats, but I don't understand how other rings would be using larger .pt sizes for a ring of equivalent carat weight. I just need some reassurance or advice. The jeweller asked me to visit on Friday. Hopefully I will get to see the diamonds then.
Thank you for your time.
