Example of what you don't want a red spinel to look like

I found this video and the stone is quite dark and burgundy looking. Since lots of people ask about optimal color on red spinels, I thought this would be a good video to post of what you don't want. Enjoy how they embellish the stone, and they keep calling the GIA report a "certificate" but it is a report (GIA doesn't certify anything).

I couldn't even watch the whole thing. That is not a red stone. Claret? ok. Burgundy? maybe. Brick red? perhaps. But definitely not red.

Oh, and I love the way he repeatedly emphasizes its rarity due to the fact that it is unheated. TL, jump on it while you can!

I wonder who played the bereved estate owner who needs to put up her "new" jewelry for sale. None of these pieces look old or worn at all, and the settings are not on par with some that I would expect a millionaire to own (they look a lot like my Chinese ebay settings). Seems fishy to me, but I guess its a good selling ploy.

I wonder why....

Thanks for the link, it was entertaining to be sure!

Well, I still would have paid a dollar for that ring!

It looks like a garnet. I agree with you TL on the setting. :nono: I think ok fine they have a report on the stone, but seriously? that color is quite common, not very expensive at all.

Stunning, indeed. TL, you made my day. I no longer feel any doubt about a stone I have.

I watched the 2nd video, and it was really weird. They showed that same tray of rings twice, and they're not the type of rings I expect for a grand estate. Where's the art deco? (My favorite style vintage style.)

Nice find TL! That video gave me a good laugh.

Eeuuw. Depressing color. Reminds me of a cheap garnet ring I had as a kid.

Looks brownish red and not very attractive. Makes me love my pinkish red spinel even more.

I am not in love with that color..its kinda of ugly in my honest opinion....

This will make you laugh (or cringe) as they call this a "vivid" top quality pink tourmaline. . . and I doubt the setting is truly vintage Art Deco, looks brand new to me. Look at the 14K stamp, it's fresh and not worn out as a true vintage piece would be. The stones in all these listings have absolutely no chips or damage, which you would expect on estate pieces.

Here's another ring going up for auction, and towards the end of the video, there's another lady (probably a paid actress) telling them she has to liquidate her collection. Notice the settings are almost identical to the ones in the tray with the other lady selling them, and why on earth would someone agree to be videoed discussing their financial hardship. Also notice he brings them to the back room for a gemologist to verify the authenticity of the pieces, and it doesn't take very long because she's still standing there when he comes back and says, 'the gemologist verified them already.'

Not to mention they all seem to be 14K gold. In my (albeit quite limited) experience, most vintage rings (my e-ring from my grandma included, as well as a lot on Fay Cullen, for example) are 18K or platinum.

I am entertained at how EVERY SINGLE RING in both "collections" is a white gold halo. You'd think if it was really a lifetime collection, there would be some variety from the thing that is super-trendy right now.

I noticed that too, and why on earth would super rich people (who are the ones supposedly listing these items on consignment) want 14K?

Honestly, if they're selling new jewelry they made themselves, then fine, but this is just a selling ploy IMHO.
