After helping me find a great diamond, I am once agfain soliciting your expert opinion to help me choose a setting. Here is some vital info:

4 prong solitaire
Platinum
Not tapered
Ring size: 5
Diamond size: .81ct

With Brian Gavin the two styles that seem to fit the bill are the classic 4 prong solitaire and the Novella Patientia. A few questions regarding both:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/four-prong-solitaire-14k-white-gold-5342w14

- The top width of the 4 prong solitaire is 2.9mm and the bottom is 2.2mm according to the wbesite which means the top of the ring is larger than the bottom. That seems strange to me. Did I understand this correctly?

- Will a 2.9mm width make the center stone (6mm) look small?

- Is the price difference ($850 vs $1475) worth it for the Novella Patientia? I ask because if my gf (soon to be fiancé) found out I didn't do my financial due dilligence, she would be greatly distressed.

Thanks again for the help!

Yes, the Novella setting is absolutely a finer setting design-wise and definitely worth the small amount of extra money. And I would rather see the 2mm shank with a diamond that size.

This is my favorite solitaire from bg

As for the two you picked I think the novella is lovely. And you have to consider how long she will wear this, isbthe increase that much? With that said I never think its a good idea to go over your budget if its firm

I know someone here who changed their diamond out of the Grace because it sits so low that they couldn't get a diamond wedding band to wear with it. So while I think it is pretty, I can't recommend that one.

I think the extra I would be spending on the setting still fall within my budget. The Novella is very nice and I think the price bump is fine, amortized over a lifetime.

I appreciate the input very much, as always.

Not all wedding rings can be worn with everything. I still think its beautiful and would fit any of my wedding band choices, so id still recommend it. Also ive heard it causes a minimal gap between the wb and e ring. Which I like. :)

I say pick the nicest one thay fits in the budget. Cost per wear is so minute and a well made setting, even for something so simple, makes a world of difference

Great! :appl: I very much agree that a few hundred dollars is worth it over a lifetime! Much better to get a good one now than to buy and have to replace later!

I think I like the the Novela the best but I like the Grace too (but I prefer a gap between the e-ring and wedding band). I definitely think the increase in price for either of those is worth it for a nicer setting.
