Hi,

On Ebay I noticed a shop of which I liked to receive an opinion from you guys.

http://www.ebay.com/usr/thejewellerycafe

and this item from the shop:
http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/221296129154?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Let me also first say that I'm absolutely new to gems, but I was searching for a necklace as a gift the past days.
About this seller:

- He offers gems/ jewellry at what seems to me a way too low price.
- Is based in Canada ( although Ebay says the gems are shipped from New York ?) ( safer than buying jewellry from Thailand,...)
- 100% positive Ebay-feedback ( however only on 321 sales)
- They ship each jewel with an appraisal and a certificate ( fake ?)

Can anyone tell me how ( astronomically ?) small the chance is that these are genuine gems ?
Many thanks

If the stones are real they are either treated out the wazoo, of very poor quality, or both. The Ruby in your link looks opaque and the shape is wonky, but it's hard to tell anything for sure because the picture looks to be taken with a camera phone at 10 paces. The appraisal is probably done in house, so its worth less than the paper it's printed on.

What's your budget?

I would agree that you can't tell much about the stone from the description and pics, and as Greg said, I would assume its a highly treated stone (so perhaps more glass than actual corundum). That said, if it really looks like the pics, and you don't mind heavy treatment, you will get an entry level piece of jewelry and are probably paying what its worth, unless it goes up much more in price...

The seller is new to me so naturally I tend to be overly cautious initially. My comment is only on the ruby you linked to.

Pros
1. Seller is affiliated with AGTA and ICG (but you'll have to verify if this is true)
2. Willing to send the stone to GIA and Dundas
3. Full refund within 30 days, no questions asked

Concerns
1. The lab fee will be higher than the cost of the ruby, so I don't think it is worth it.
2. I don't know if it is a generic picture but I think it is, so the stone may not look exactly as pictured.
3. The picture too small to make out any details. For all I know, it could be horribly cut. More importantly, the clarity is listed as moderately included, meaning you will definitely see "stuff" in the ruby, most likely a lot of stuff.
