Woohoo! That''s a great quality stone! But I understand that it might not be your cup of tea. If it''s important that it be passed down to you, can you reset it into a necklace and have that be the heirloom or does it *have* to be your e-ring?

I like Bliss''s suggestion of turning the stone into a necklace to have a lovely heirloom piece out of it, while still getting a ring that is more your style. Would that be a possibility? Would your SO and his family be offended if you didn''t want the stone as your e-ring? I''m sorry you are in such a difficult situation, hope it get resolved soon!

I think it''s completely personal.

My DH''s family (from what I''ve seen) doesn''t seem to share in my love of diamonds...they all seem to have small stones of poor quality...and ergo none of those diamonds would be something/anything I''d want...

However, my grandmothers stone was a sizable pear (over 6 cts) and is beautiful so the opportunity to wear that would have been a no-brainer.

When I was in college, I had a boyfriend who gave me his grandmother''s e-ring. I don''t know the size, but to me it appears to be colorless and no inclusions. I''m assuming that the center stone is a round .25-.35 and it has side diamonds. I think it might be a transitional cut as well. I can''t even tell you how much it sparkles, it is absolutely breath taking. When we broke up I gave it back to him, but he let me keep it. Lucky for me, I now have a small treasure to cherish. I''ll have to take pictures and post them later on tonight.
