So as some of you know, I am aalllll over the place trying to find something for a family member. He keeps coming st me with COMPLETELY different ideas.
"She wants vintage. Loves yellow gold. Hates yellow gold. Stone isn't important the setting is. No, I want a simple solitaire and as big a diamond I can get!"

:? :? :? :? :? :?

So its like.... clearly you are all over the place, sir! So I went strait to the source to see what SHE ACTUALLY WANTS as he cannot seem to make his mind up.

Well, its the exact opposite of what he was thinking. . She wants " unique. " "angles" and "color".......

Ideally she wants a stop cut (she likes squares but refuses to have a princess) with it set kite set or E/W or an E/W pear or trillion.

She likes red, but unless we went cultured I don't think we would be able to get red on his 700 budget (IF IM WRONG PLEASE LET ME KNOW) . She also liked neon green. So that's good for him. She seemed really into the neon chrysoberyl.... do you think a ring like this could be completed for that budget? Chrysoberyl is good for e rings right? I feel like its reasonably priced, bit that only based on one vendor ive seen. Maybe its expensive and I'm just not seeing good ones.

Yup, step cut chrysoberyl is durable, inexpensive and she likes it so that's doable. Hardy red for $700 is unrealistic. Softer red is doable but won't last as an e-ring stone. The problem is that with your budget, finding a neon step cut is the challenge unless you get it custom cut, which just raises the price. Must it be a step cut? Ovals and cushions are aplenty.

She is really not a fan of rounded edges. Ovals, cushions, rounds are out. She seems to really be taken with trillions. She actually, funny enough, really likes yours (that sideways one with a WF setting is yours right??)

Anyways.... she likes trillions. I found one that seems nice but I feel like it could be "neoner"

Also the engsgement will probably be end of November, do you think there would be a step cut one around somewhere by then?

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Colour isn't neon but that cut is fantastic and will sparkle to the max! Yes, mine is the trilliant in the WF setting. Interesting that she likes such a unique shape. She's all right with a concave style? I don't know if you'll be able to find a step cut within 3 months. Even if you do, there's no guarantee the colour is pretty or if the cut is decent.

Yeah here's a video of it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV1_R24DN9U&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I showed her this specific stone and she liked it. Only problem is its 300 ish.... which is OK, but that leaves 400ish for the setting, which would be used to find with diamonds, wed have to probably go used and get a new head... but even that would be hard to do.

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Is it correct to say, you are looking at E ring with step cut neon green chrysoberyl in $700 range. The stone on the picture and the ring itself are not very exciting looking...

I agree.

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Yes. Clearly the inspiration ring isn't very attractive. But its a peridot with some very cloudy side diamonds for sale on ebay for about $150.

The goal would be to create something similar.
A setting similar to just this stuller one would be great.

I get its an atypical e ring but, though the inspiration ring is low quality, a high quality replica could be quite unique and striking. Not for everyone but she was quite insisting on color with "corners and angles " and some diamonds.

Worse case though shed be OK with a solitaire if she got diamond bands on either side of it. Smart lady.

Have you approached Michael E at The Gemshoppe? http://www.gemshoppe.com/

Michael is a gem cutter as well as a jewelry designer, and does beautiful work. I haven't bought any gemstones from him but he has done several custom as well as Stuller/Adwar-component pieces for me. If you contact him with your budget, he may have some suitable stones in stock or be able to obtain/cut something to order, and once you decide on the right setting he can do that for you as well. FYI: In my experience while he is excellent with communication, most of the things he has made for me took more time than initially quoted ... so if there is a hard deadline by which your FBIL needs the finished ring, you should let Michael know.

Thanks for the idea! I sent him an email.

The other idea was to just do a solitaire. Do you think you could get like a precision cut (Jeff white type) step cut for around 500? Or am I out of my mind?

Custom = $$. Must it be a step cut? You can probably get a rectangular cushion for less and sooner too. Just a thought, that's all. What mm size are you looking for?

Nothing large. That trillion is 7.5 and she thought that was huge... maybe 7-8 mm long of its a rectangle. Nothing huge.

Oh that's pretty. I wish it was neon but the color seems bright.

This one isn't neon but you can't beat a step cut for $100.

This one doesn't look as nice as the one above.

Do you think the first one is better? Maybe its just the brightness of my phone screen but I thought that looks nice. Is it the cut?

PS thanks so much for helping!

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Must be my phone so I'm using my Tablet. The first is more olive, the second is greener. Thanks for making me slow down to re-evaluate both choices. I feel horrible to make such an error in judgement. My apologies.

No apologies! I really appreciate your eyes, as mine are admittedly novice.

My thought was a 7-8 (smaller if it could be a really cool asscher ) maybe just might be doable on this budget if we then went with a poppyseed solitaire or something. I know she would want diamonds in the ring somehow, but she had said to me she would be happy to upgrade in a bit once she has more money. Which wouldnt be too long, but i know he wants to get engaged ASAP, hes only waiting until November in respect to me and my fiance. So I mean, ideally i could do it alllllllll, BUT, his budget is tight, and i know she said she would be happy to put down 1k or something toward a setting earlier next year. So maybe its just a smart idea to get the most amazing one possible, set it in a cute but cheap solitaire, and have her either reset it or buy a bunch of diamond ands to stack with it?

this would be so much easier if her and i were doing this together, but even though i have specifically talk to her about it, he wont ask her to pitch in now, or be in the design of the ring, as he wants to surprise her.

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Is he open to a reset next year? If so, I'd go all out on the stone now. If not, you'll need to get the ring done quickly since November is just around the corner.

She seems OK with it so I'm trying to sell him on it too. Literally NO ONE does that around here. You go to a store buy a whole ring and wear it for 50 years. So in his mind he wants it all right now.

Because in my head if I could get her one of those asscher style cuts Jeff white does and just set it kite style I feel like the diamonds could be postponed.

We sat around for like an hour Friday night talking about what she wants and it was the most interesting unique things she was asking for. I'd hate to compromise on the stone when in the long run she can get precisely what she wants.

Like if she had her way I think shed get an asscher with trillions on all for sides!

Such an interesting perspective.

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Whatever you decide or do, do it quickly. Stones linked here tend to move very quickly. Unlike diamonds, a like or similar stone is very difficult to find. An asscher cut chrysoberyl will be spectacular. However, it needs size to look good. I'd say a minimum of 6.5 mm in order to be able to appreciate the pattern. I think this will be a 2 ct stone at minimum and will take just about your entire budget for a custom cut stone.

Ive emailed a few vendors to see what they think about pricing.

Is there anyone else you can think of to email about it?

Re: FBIL saga... went strait to the source.

Jeff White is the most likely to get you a neon stone. Have you tried Gary Braun and Peter T? Gene won't take commissions and Barry is selective. I don't think Dan Stair or Jerry can find the right rough.
