Feather and placing of prongs

Quick question for you guys,

I'm going to set a diamond into a 4-claw ring. The diamond has a rather large internal feather near the edge of the girdle (apparently does not break surface). So would it be best to cover it with the prong or leave it in the open? (I'm leaning towards covering it....)

I hear that the strength of the feather region is essentially the same as other parts of the diamond (afterall, diamond is pretty darn hard

). We're not likely going to be knocking it roughly around to be honest.

Details: Platinum; 0.42ct F SI1

Any opinions or advice?

Talk to the person setting the stone about it. Every situation is different, some feathers/inclusions you can cover, some you are better off not. Only someone physically examining the stone can say.

When should you not cover them??

Breaks are reportedly extremely rare unless with forces of great magnitude I believe.

Absolutely. It apparently depends on the feather, it might be best with some to place the prong next to it rather than directly over and so on.

OK I guess I''ll check with Whiteflash before it gets set then.

By the way, is it usual for rings to be manufactured in set sizes? So will they have increasing head sizes for .33ct .5ct 1ct etc?? Or do they have even more sizes in between?

I asked my ring company to make one for a 0.42ct diamond, but the form said 0.47ct. Will this make a difference at all or should I be concerned now?

Ya, especially with setting with integrated heads as they will need to size it accordingly. A few 0.1mm off can be adjusted as the prongs are thick and will be notched for the diamond to be seated in.

So you mean that they DO make them in certain set sizes, so I shouldnt be that worried.

The diamond I bought is tiny bit smaller than the one they mistakenly placed on the order form, so should be fine. I guess a 0.1mm more of a prong will make it sit tighter (this comment prob sounds utterly ridiculous to diamond experts/setters here!!!) hahaha

On an SI1 I would cover or place the prong near enough to hide the feather. The stone setter is really the person to ask.
