feedback on this ring from lang's?

For something with an AGL report stating it to be an unheated ruby of Burmese origin, that's a decent price given the color, even with the inclusions. Lang's is a little high but on this item I don't think the price is outlandishly high. Lang's, while selling estate pieces, often has prices that are like new retail and I think that's probably about right for this item. Also consider that you likely can't buy a Burmese ruby any other way but in an estate piece due to the embargo.

I'm not an expert at all, so just asking a question. Given the price, isn't the ruby sort of pink? Are you sure that would be a ruby and not a pink sapphire? Is you wife definitely seeking a ruby? If she likes that pink shade, perhaps a much cheaper but still gorgeous pink spinel would work?

I love the style of the ring, but I don't think it is so unusual that you couldn't find something similar, or have one made to your specs at a much lower price.

I agree that I'd call that a pink sapphire. Outside of the US, it may be called a ruby. The distinction is subjective.

You may do better financially to find a pink sapphire, heat-only, and put it in a stock halo. If your wife is okay with a round center stone, it will be easiest to fit it in a halo because ovals can have different outlines.

An alternative is to buy a pink sapphire (with whatever treatment you prefer) and have a custom setting made.

I just thought it was a somewhat unlively stone. But Im only seeing photos. AGL sw the stone in person and I doubt they would call it ruby if it were more accurately pink sapphire. It would be nice if Langs would post the lab report.

Don't you think the measurements are off? It's an oval but it says 6x6.10.

The measurements on Lang's listings are off occasionally. If you look through the rings you'll usually find another that ACTUALLY has those measurements that they just copied and pasted from. It's awkward.

Yeah, this was what I was going by - if it has an AGL report, I'll trust what AGL says. I would imagine they'd let an interested party see it even if they won't post it on the site. (PLUS every one of my ruby things I've ever photographed has turned out pretty darn pink even though in person they look really red, so I am always skeptical of the photography of these things.)

The listing states the following:
AGL - American Gemological Laboratory stating: Burma - No Heat. 5/8 inch by 9/16 inch across.

It does not say that AGL calls it a Ruby. This may be implied, but I would want to check.

Quotation
A rich, luscious-red, oval Burma ruby, weighing 1.15 carats but presenting significantly larger due to its cut, floats inside a sparkling, rounded-edge platinum and diamond frame embellished with raised diamond-set epaulets on each side. The beautiful ring dates from the early-twentieth century and may be classified as either late-Edwardian or early-Art Deco. The ruby is accompanied by an AGL - American Gemological Laboratory stating: Burma - No Heat. 5/8 inch by 9/16 inch across.

Shallow stone due to the cut, hence it looks larger. The stone is pancake-like, low crown and low pavilion. Note the window and when worn on the finger, the skin colour darkens the windowed area. I expect the ruby to look rather unlively and it doesn't look glowy either. Other than that, the ring itself is beautiful, well made and in good condition. I find Lang's expensive but they have done the homework for the buyer. They offer quality antique jewellery and charge for it.

I admit that I threw Langs out there just as a starting point; I have really not spent considerable time to looking at the vendors who sell good quality antique and vintage pieces. I knew of Lang because I drool there regularly. But I'm sure there are others as well? Anybody have suggestions for where the OP should look? Isn't there one with New York in the title? OP: Sorry I don't know names... :blackeye:

Re: feedback on this ring from lang's

I appreciate he wonderful feedback, consensus seems to be the ruby is not lively and maybe I'm overpaying a little. Let me open it up to suggestions, which rings on langs or other reputable sites we should consider? Doesn't have to be antique but my wife likes the style. I appreciate everyone's time, Would it be inappropriate to offer a small finder's fee if we select a ring suggested here ?

So you seem drawn to art deco stylings with nice detailing. Does she have a stone color or type in mind?

yes, she's looking for a ruby. we bought a beautiful diamond tennis bracelet from whiteflash based on feedback here. They don't have much in the way of rubies on their site, would it make sense for me to call them and see what they might be able to concoct?

Budget of $10K for the completed ring? Untreated ruby?
