Dream budget vs. Realistic budget thoughts for a ring? With your dream budget still being somewhat realistic (ie. not 1 million dollars)

And.....What do you think/know FF's budget for a ring is?

my dream budget would be around $10,000-$16,000
my realistic budge is probably $6,000-$8,000

FF's budget is probably $3.00 LOL!

(actually, Im not sure he hasn't told me and probably doesn't even know himself)

Prior to picking out the ring and knowing the prices:

Dream budget: $12,000-$15,000
Actual price: $17,000!!! AHHHH... my SO wanted a bigger ring than I did.

Dream budget: I think I could do a lot in the 10-15k range. Honestly, I don''t WANT a really huge ring. I just want a simple, good-quality RB solitaire.

Realistic budget: er... I don''t know. SO and I discuss finances in every other capacity all the time. Yet, it feels awkward for us to discuss the specifics of an e-ring budget. I suppose because he''s so big on the details being a surprise as well as perhaps being a bit old-fashioned? I know he feels like he ''should'' spend a fair amount. I have a vague idea, but I have no real expectations.

Dream: $5000 --> That would cover a 1ct plus my setting.

Reality: $2328 --> My .48 beauty plus the setting.

Hmm, interesting question.

I think my dream budget would probably be no more than $10,000...ok, MAYbe $12,000, but honestly, there's a point where I just start to feel greedy since even in dreamland I know there are bills to pay and other stuff to spend money on (like J could REALLY use a new computer, his overheats constantly--or a car--or a trip home at Christmas).

Realistic budget, I have no idea. I'm hoping for $7000 (we're both saving for it together), but I haven't gotten a job yet so currently our budget is $0.

But eventually we will have some money saved! Maybe not that much though, really not sure. Depends on how long we want to wait to get engaged, I guess!

ETA: It will be a forever ring--neither of us want to upgrade later, so that's why if we can, I'd like to save up to get as close to the dream ring as possible.

Dream?? Whatever a gorgeous 2ct would cost :)
Realistic?? Under 1 carat - but with the option to upgrade :)

His budget is around $4k - $5k .. I don't even care anymore, whatever I get will be great!! Eventually I'd like to have a ring above 1 carat... when one of us is not in school or paying off school loans!! :)

My absolute dream budget would be around 15-17K for the stone and setting.

That said, what our realistic budget will be will really depend on if we decide to use Kris' great grandmother's stone, which we haven't seen yet (but should see in 2 weeks when we're up seeing his family--ahhh!) If we do, the budget will be for a platinum antique inspired setting. If we go with a new stone, it'll be higher (probably 10K, tops, but more likely to be 8K or so) because it will be for a stone and a setting (hopefully MWM's Torchiere!)

In any case, this ring will be my forever ring--I don't want to upgrade something so sentimental.

My dream budget would be 15-20K!
27.gif
Not for a huge stone but more for a perfect stone. D or E color and as close to flawless as possible Ideal cut etc. Plus a gorgeous setting to show it off.

The realistic budget(guessing here) is around 10 (but probably less)

I told him I think 4-5000 should be reasonable for someone with a PhD in comp sci. I had already adjusted down (I was thinking more like 6-8000!) because I didn't want to scare him, and Europeans aren't really into big diamonds.

Realistically, probably 2000 since we'll probably both have just graduated. Maybe less...we haven't talked about that yet.

I would really like something about .7 cts.

I know if we could afford it in the future, and if I wanted, he'd be willing to upgrade or get me something new.

What fun thread!

Dream budget: $30,000
Actual budget: $20,000 - I feel really lucky but I think lovely rings come at all prices.

Hmmmm....

Dream budget: $35,995 (
1.gif
For the 1.51 ct Novo I tried on at Tiffany)

Realistic budget ring now: $5.00 (Yeah, sad I know)

Realistic eventual budget: $5,000-$8,000 (This would be my guess but I have no idea, he is full of surprises)

oooo..i like this topic!

dream budget - pre-PS: $5000
dream budget - after-PS: $10000
realistic budget - probably $5000

Dream Budget: 250k for the ring we both loved it 4ct Glacier cut center with half moon sides TDF
Real Budget: approx 17-20k

Dream: Around $10K

Reality: $4K

How fun!

My dream budget: $700
FI''s dream budget: $10,000
Real budget: $1,500

LOL!! Great responses everyone!!

Well.. My dream budget would include purchasing a 1.5 ct ACA RB in a platinum tacori setting + wedding band.
My realistic budget is $4500 (0.8 ct ACA RB in tacori halo

)

I''m married, too, but wanted to represent the "compromise"

My budget: $4,000 (eternity band)
DH''s budget: $25,000 - $30,000
Compromise: $10,000
The actual cost: $8,000 plus a trip to Paris (the rest went towards our goal to buy a house with no mortgage)

Compromise: what marriage is about, haha :)

Dream Budget: $3000-$5000
Actual Price: $1230 ( I love bargain shopping!

)

Let's see...

My dream budget: probably around $30-$40k (is that shameful?) OR whatever a perfect 2.5ct would cost (Tiffany or something equally special)

His dream budget: whatever I wanted, I guess?

Realistic: in the vicinity of $10k...I think, but I haven't asked...I am too scared to ask!
3.gif

Ahhhh...to dream
30.gif

ETA: LOL NOPE, I just asked him his dream budget and he said, "The best $500 can get, only the best for my baby!" LOL LITTLE BRAT!

Dream budget 35k.
Realistic budget 25k.
I could have the ring at the dream budget if we wait to get engaged.

His ideal budget is in line with my realistic budget.

Bia, mine says the same thing, and always jokes about "diamond chips"

Anyone else wondering what some of these people do for a living to afford a $25k ring? Or higher? Holy smokes! That''d get me a car.. pay off a third of my school debt.. or something else.. I''d be scared to walk around with a $30k ring.. I''d have to insure not only the diamond but my finger and hand as well

Hmmm...

My dream budget is actually around $800 (I have never been a big jewellry person and just can't justify spending more than $1000 when we are struggling to save enough for a home deposit and I want to go on one last overseas trip before children)

My realistic budget is around $1500

His budget is whatever I want (which is what he says, but probably not more than $3000-4000).

I looked at rings with stones other than diamonds but I couldn't really find anything I wanted. I was looking for an oval or pear shaped opal with diamonds around it as Opal is my birthstone and diamond is his. The only ring i have seen that just made me feel like yes, that is what i want, is a pear shaped diamond in a tiffany setting (but not actually from tiffany's). Will just have to wait and see what bargains we can find. I have now shown my SO pictures of what I want and told him that if he wants to surprise me with a ring, to get me one like that. It will be his choice as to the specs of the diamond (ie how much he wants to pay) but I don't really want him to pay anymore than $1500. If I can't get what I want for that I will have to find something else.

My SO is a Major in the Army and is 37 years old. He has two advanced degrees with no student loan debt and both his car and motorcycle are paid for. I''m 27, but I spent a few years in the military and got my education while I was in, even if I hadn''t gone into the military I received a few full academic scholoarships. I was lucky enough to get a job at a university when I left the military and didn''t have to pay for my advanced degree either my car is paid for and I don''t have any debt. Neither of us have children and beyond housing, food, clothing and gas we don''t have any real bills between us. I work for the federal government now and, like my SO, I''m able to put over half of my pay into savings. It''s put me on top financially and I''m able to have my dream ring/wedding/honeymoon/whatever with money left over and without putting us in a financial bind. He''s not getting out for at least another 10 years and we don''t plan on having children, so when the time comes we''ll build our dream home without a 500 year mortgage.
I guess those are just some of the perks of waiting until I got older to get married.

my dream budget would cover whatever a 1ct. round solitaire in a white gold xprong would cost.

actualy budget....get this, $360. Since the diamond was his great grandmother''s all we had to purchase was the setting. AWESOME.

Okay my budget is not quite at the 25k mark but it was up there with us he works long hours and rakes in heaps of overtime neither one of us has car debts, credit cards, loans etc. I drive a little old crap box and I love her he has no car debt. We both have a house with way less half the mortgage that is average is and when we finish renovating about a 1/3 of the value of the house we save heaps we are not frivolous in our spending.

If we didn''t already have the house and all the other stuff my ring budget would not be anywhere neat what it is but we don''t so for that reason it was not a biggie :), we only plan on doing this once no upgrades this is it :).

LaurenThePartier I adore your ring it is one of my favourites so is that one that you listed on Pearlmans OMG if I win lotto that sucker is mine.
