Hi everyone,

Here is what I am looking for in an engagement ring for my lovely girlfriend:
⁃ Split shank
⁃ Pave (micropave preferable)
⁃ Round cut (will end up being .8 to 1.5 carats I expect)
⁃ "Petite". The band should be less than 2mm, perhaps even as low as 1.5mm. Each split can be around 1mm. I am not sure.
⁃ The split needs to be relatively thin (i.e., there should not be a ton of space between each split).
⁃ The split shouldn't be too long (e.g., wrapping beyond midpoint of finger)
⁃ The pave, preferably, would go slightly beyond the split.
⁃ No halo

Also, I am not rich, so it shouldn't be too expensive.

I have seen the Tiffany's lucida, which is almost perfect! I was happy to see it; however, there are two limitations of that ring. First, it does not hold a round diamond, so it is written off. Second, the size of the split on the Tiffany's Lucida is largely dependent on the size of the stone. For example, a .5 carat on that ring looks great, but a 1.2 carat makes the split become far too large. The reason is because the splits connect closely to the outside of the mounting, I think. I have seen split shanks where the splits connect to the inside of the posts on the mounting, which allows the split to be smaller.

Here are some more questions:

1. Would you buy a semi-mount (band/ring) online? I have been told that buying a pave band online is risky because sometimes they size them (instead of making them custom?), which changes the circumference of the band and diamonds on the pave can fall out later.
2. Lets say I buy a semi-mount in a store somewhere, and buy a diamond online or something. How do I get these two together? I simply approach jewellers and try to get the best bet?

Here is Tiffany's lucia. As you can see in the lucida the pave is nice goes lower than when the splits meet, and is petite. Also, the X mounting is nice.

here are other ones, that are almost as nice and with round stone

Thank you!

Hit the Report Concern button and move this to rocky talk- you will get more responses.

What is your budget and that will help me taylor my answer to you.

Really? I thought that was more for stones, while I am looking for a band. I am happy to move it though, if it will help!

My budget for the setting/band/semi-mount? I'm unsure. 1000-2000$? I don't know how much they usually cost alone. My overall budget is about 6-7, although I would maybe make it to 8k.

You'll definitely get more responses in RT so I'd move this thread. You have a tight budget for this kind of setting so it'll be good to get the experts opinions over there! I'm sure they'll have some good ideas.

These might be a little bit above your budget for the 14k white gold, but here are some ideas:

I specifically like ZE120 per your guidelines:
http://www.danhov.com/engagement/danhov-eleganza-split-shank-engagement-ring-ze120.html

For the purchase of our original ring (diamond and Danhov ZE127 setting), we went through James Allen who was absolutely AMAZING. Although, the JA website didn't feature the Danhov setting we liked, they were able to order it.
The setting was delicate looking, yet very solid, well-made, and comfortable. I highly reccommend Danhov settings, if you don't pursue a custom-setting.

Edit: You may have issues with the link to the website: If you do, just search by the product number, or hit the back button. The settings are in the Eleganza collection.

I think that "high" or "low" is relative to your budget. Just like with any product, you can price-match and find it more expensive, or less expensive depending on how and where you shop.

Good luck in your search! :wavey:

Very nice! But yes, as you mentioned, it is too wide :(

First off you really SHOULDN"T shop for a setting till you have the diamond. The quote you get for this ring may vary depending on the size and shape you get.

Find your diamond first as that is the big expense then start looking at setting it. You are approaching this backwards my friend ;))

And just to add 2k for a setting being that this will probably have to be custom unless you find something you like, is at the low end. Most custom settings that are CAST are between 3-5k. Not all, but most. I think yours could be doable in the 2500 range depending on the vendor you use. Once again the most cost efficient path would be to just find a ring that is already made like the GabrielNY line. They are price more price friendly.

If your budget is 5-7k and you spend 2k on a setting that will only leave you 3-5 k for a diamond. Pending your specs I would think a 1ct is doable but you a 1.5 probably wouldn't make it unless you went really down in color. I haven't done a diamond search in that range for a while so I could be way off. Definitely move this to RT and have them find you a diamond and then get the setting. The experts over there are FANTASTIC. This forum you posted in is for already completely jewelry so it will get a lot less traffic.

Wow guys thanks for all your help! A lot of those settings are quite nice. Keep them coming if you can!

Also, I should specify that I will get the stone first, but I would still like to know what setting I will likely go for.

I have time, I will likely not be dropping the question for another year. That being said, its good to look early, especially for this kind of thing!

How about this:

scroll down to RSC-C Split Crown Ring
I can't zoom in, but it kinda looks like what you are looking for.

I am having one designed because I was looking for something similar to what you are describing, but I also was looking for double claw prongs, and other picky stuff.
Having one custom made is not a bad idea, there are some vendors on here people have used with success. You also may get a better deal if you source the stone through the same vendor.

What do you think of this ring (it's mine) and would easily fit a round? This was made by Leon Mege but would be over your budget.

This is another ring of mine and the setting is under $1000 in white gold. I have seen peple sell this setting upwards of $2000.

Or this one which I bought off eBay

WOW. Those settings are quite nice. How did you get that last one off ebay? Thats amazing. I don't think she would like the type of prong, but everything else looks quite nice.

As for making a custom ring, should I just approach jewlers in my area? I live in a relatively small city.

Your options are vastly wider online than at a local jeweler. Not to mention you will get a better diamond for a better price online. The Gabriel settings will come closest to your price point. I'd recommend looking through all their settings to see if there is one you'd like.

Charms, I'd love to know the source of the setting with the pink stone!

Well, the issue is that in my experience diamonds are a ton cheaper if I look at many websites and get the best one. By limiting myself to only the store that has the setting I like, I have a feeling that the diamond will be 1 or 2k more expensive. My idea was the buy the diamond and get it placed in a setting that I also buy separately. The people that I get the setting from could mount the diamond, or perhaps someone else?

Is this not the best way?

I'm not sure if I recommend looking around 1 year out. She might change her mind and then you might be stuck with something you already purchased or you might have just wasted time searching for something she doesn't like anymore.

With that said, yes you purchase the diamond online. They can either ship it to you or ship direct to the jeweler who will be making your ring. Whether it is a local person to you or another online presence it doesn't matter- most stores will accept outside diamonds. If you like the Gabriel settings you can go with IDJ. You might get a better price if you buy the diamond and the setting from the same place (plus you will save on shipping).

One thing to keep in mind is that if you buy the stone and setting from two different vendors you will have to figure out how to insure the stone while it is being set which can be tricky depending on the vendor.

Charmypoo, I'm really liking your ebay find. The ring is lovely!

But I want less links and more pictures in this thread! Waaaaahh ;(

I got a good price on that ebay setting - it's platinum too. I bought it off one of my fave ebay sellers but it's just one off. The jewelers were all oogling over the setting.

Thank you everyone! This is very helpful. I will keep all of these suggestions in mind. The whiteflash one is quite nice, I will add it to my bookmarks. One issue is trying to figure out specific widths (e.g., of each split) but perhaps I can contact them.

I asked to get this moved to rocky talky, but no luck yet :(
