fluorescing diamond stays lit for a few seconds...

Hey guys,
I am pretty sure my diamond is fluorescing- which is news to me. But exciting nonetheless.

Can you use any black light to see a diamond's fluorescence?
Can certain UV lights fake the fluorescence?
The light I have is just a cheapie (less than $10) and I know there are supposedly different kinds of UV lights but that's all I know.

Also my SO noticed when I turned the light off the diamond stays lit up but fades in about 4 seconds... anyone noticed this with their diamond's fluorescence?

There is long wave UV and short wave UV ... but it sounds like what you've got is a diamond that's not just FLUORescent, but also PHOSPHOrecent! I think there was a thread on this phenomenon recently, if you search. Is the "glow" after the same color?

ETA: And, there's no faking fluorescence. That is REALLY cool!

I think a handful of others have posted previously about their diamonds retaining the fluorescence after the black light has been removed. Check out/google phosphorescence

Yayyyyyyyyyy. Thank you Circe. I really wanted it to be a real fluorescence but I didn't want to get my hopes up until I knew for sure.

I can't find that post yet. I am having a hard time getting relevant results with the search bar on this site.. my error I am sure.
And I couldn't find anything on Google because I didn't know the right words to use. Phosphorescent!

Yes, I never tried it until I read about it here, but some do hold some glow after removing the light. It is great, I think!

Ahhhhhh I am so excited.

I wasn't expecting my diamond to have fluorescence in the first place even though I wanted it so bad... and now it does and it looks strong! Now it's even better with phosphorescence...
I am geeking out.

Phosphorescence is way cool and rare for a diamond to exhibit it. Congrats on getting such a stone. : )
