Only pet lovers really understand each other''s love of their pets!
Their stories:
Tybee (my sign on name, obviously) is the "faun" dane.
She just happened to be dropped off at the Humane Society on a day that I was there.
She was just 9 weeks old, and although I had a dane at the time (also a rescue,) I had never seen a great dane puppy.
I couldn''t believe that she was actually a dane! After seeing her, I had to have her, much to the annoyance of my first dane, and my exboyfriend.
She quickly acclimated to the family, but insisted on living the life of a princess. Tybee must be covered with a blanket at night. She will cry until covered. Tybee is now 9 years old, and slowly slowing down.

Tybee is the most codependent dog I have ever met. She cannot be alone. You can see the sadness in her eyes when you are leaving her, and she will get quite depressed.
After Maggie (my first dane) died, both Tybee and I were heart broken. I went on a search for great danes in need of homes and found Penny... aka The Monster.
Penny is a beautiful Harlequin Dane that was actually born in Germany and bought by a breeder in the US. But they quickly found out the Penny has hip dysplasia, so she was adopted out. She was 6 months old when I brought her home, and she is the true clown of the family.
Tybee is both annoyed by Penny and in love with her. The two are inseparable.

oops, Penny''s face

If you''ve ever known a dane, you know that they are delicate beasts despite their size. Tybee doesn''t like to sit on the ground if it''s cold. Here she is keeping a friend''s chair warm at a frisbee tournament.

Tybee also likes to help herself to drinks that may be left behind. No drop goes wasted...

They enjoy rides in the car, hiking, caming, swimming, and sleeping...

It''s crazy how regal they look sometimes, when deep down they''re just a couple of goof balls.
The hardest thing about having a destination wedding for us was leaving these girls behind.
But we managed, lol!

Tybee,

THANK YOU so much for posting pictures of your babies! I''ve always had my eye on Great Danes (ridiculous number of saved pics and websites on my computer)... But can''t quite justify adding on to my pack (2 Aussies)... at least not YET!

I love the pic of the two of them in the back of your jeep? So cute!!

I know I "pushed" for this thread, but OH how I appreciate it! So much cooler seeing GreatDanes in REAL situations, in a real person''s life....

Thanks again!!

Yup,
two is the magic number for dogs I think, but aussies are wonderful. Quite diifferent personalities that big lazy delicate danes, though, from what I hear.
Thanks for asking. I am a proud mommy to my girls. Love to show them off. So, why don''t you follow suit? Show off your aussies for us!

Well, I''m not Aussiegirl, but can I say how much I love your babies?

So sweet!

(LOL...they look like they could enjoy Widget as a light between-meal snack!! But knowing how sweet Danes are, and how MEAN Widget is, she''d probably scare them to death if they tried!)

The picture of Tybee in the chair is priceless...

Thanks for sharing!

I love the story of how you adopted both Tybee and Penny- what a sweet angel you are!
They are both so beautiful! LOL, love the pics!
Isnt it funny how animals are like people- each one has a truly unique personality!!
Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks SanDiegoLady and Widget!

Seeing how Penny is afraid of most cats and kittens, I think it''s safe to say that Widget would scare the pants off her!
Here she is trying to sneak her 135 pounds under a chair---

Tybee,

I''m not going to start my own thread, but hi-jack/add to yours : ) I don''t have many pictures on my computer (neither my boyfriend nor I own a digital camera or scanner...) These two were randomly taken by my sister while she was in town last week... But it''s better than nothing!

These are Blue Boy (left) and Bailey (right)... our 2 Australian Shepherds...

They too are both adoptions - best way in my opinion! I''m not seirous about adding to the pack - 2 is the perfect number to have, but it''s fun daydreaming once in a while

Again, thanks for sharing!

Oh Baily''s ears up at attention!
Too cute!
Your babies are wonderful! I''d take my dogs everywhere with me if I could.
Funny, I''ve really been wanting to add a third dog, but I think it''s just my biological clock talking.
Still not ready for babies, so puppies sounds good.
I really am in love with French bulldogs, but my husband is against it.

Tybee,

I think I remember that your husband wasn''t exactly a huge dog fan when you met (that is, before he met your babies)? My boyfriend was the same way -- he kind of avoided them at all costs at first, objected to their drool, thought their extravagant number of toys was silly, etc...

Well, maybe a month later, and his attitude did a 180! Thank goodness, or he would have been history!

I think it''s cute that you''re thinking about a 3rd dog in response to your biological clock - that''s going to be me in a few years : )

Tybee we have a dane at the shelter... he's such a love. But your right about them being delicate. He's not taking well to the shelter and it's breaking my heart. I'm pretty sure his pic is up on petfinder... but I don't know if posting the link would be violating the rules as I am a volunteer there. Will have to ask.

ETA: OPPS!! I've been calling HER a HIM this whole time. No wonder she won't come up to me when I go to see her.

Here''s the blurb about her (the dane at the shelter)... I don''t think this will violate any rules.

"This big girl has quite a story. For a couple days the shelter was getting calls that a very large dog was running loose through town. Our animal control officers went out to try to get her, but she kept eluding them. Finally, we caught up with her and the poor thing was totally exhausted, hungry and was running a fever of 106 degrees. We got her proper medical treatment and now she is settling in here at the shelter. Sadly, no one has come looking for this beautiful girl. Heidi is a 6 year old blue merle Great Dane and was most likely used for breeding, then cast aside when she got a little older. She is a big mush and the staff has fallen in love with her. If you are a fan of these gentle giants, please inquire about our Heidi. At this time we are unsure of her feelings towards other animals or children. Heidi is not currently spayed, but this will be done in the near future."

Oh Gypsy,
that breaks my heart! There are several Great Dane rescue organizations that might want to foser him if they knew he was at the shelter...
oh, poor baby. I wish that I could rescue them all.

Oh man...
that kills me.
I call Penny Mushy... it describes her perfectly. Gypsy, what city are you in?
My first dane was a blue Merle...

Oh, she looks like a beautiful baby!
I wish I could take her.
I hope she finds a "forever" home soon.
Danes are so sensitive. They really get insecure and needy.
She actually looks like my first dane, the love of my life, Maggie. Breaks my heart
how people abandon animals.

doggies! tybee your pups are too cute! aussie yours too!

my stylist has a great dane male and he's HUGE and he is only 6 months! what a dollface though, she always has new pictures when i come to see her. she said he will get to be about 170lbs...like a full grown man!!

considering portia is only 18 lbs, 170 boggles the mind. hehehe.

Aww, Tybee, your dogs are so adorable! (You too, aussie!) Thanks so much for sharing these pics with us. I can''t believe Penny is afraid of cats! The pic of her under the chair was just too cute! What little (or big!) angels...

I''ve heard that Danes are actually great apartment dogs because, although they''re big, they''re fairly lazy so don''t need a whole lot of exercise & can function in a small space. Maybe when my biological clock starts ticking....

Love the pics of your dogs Tybee and Aussiegirl!

As for two being the perfect number... the Happy Hubby is volunteering at the Anti Cruelty Society (where The Demon Dog came from) and I just *know* one of these days we''re going to have an addition to the family!

Awwwwww, both of your dogs are SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

I have a special place in my heart for great danes even though we''ve never had one, because everyone always thought our black lab was part dane because he was unusually large with a very square nose - and the noble expressions of your dogs, Tybee, remind me of him sooo much!!!! I can''t waaait until we''re no longer in an apartment and can have a nice big dog again!!!!
