For LA people - some amazing gems at the Natural History Museum

We just made an over the top braclet for an older lady. She wants it for herself to look at.

This I can understand very well. I am the same way. But when I drive and the go to pick up the baguette from my favourite Boulangerie early in the morning, I am conscious of disenfranchised youth lounging around nearby.

It I impossible to find anyone though to help you carry heavy things (in exchange for decent payment), if let's say, you have a bad case of arthritis.

Wearing and enjoying them for yourself, instead of for others.

There's so much more to having nice things than showing them off as status symbols.
I "show my diamond off" to myself when I'm alone.

Dear Kenny,

Was this meant as some sort a snub? :)

Good for you that you enjoy your diamond with yourself, while you're alone. You have really made me smile :D

There’s a thread on PriceScope somewhere (or two) called high karat gold jewellery or (maybe and) family heirloom jewellery; search for these @VeryUndecided

There’s an entire world of different cultures and situations and environments where people of all sorts wear fancy jewellery of all sorts, it’s so beautiful!

I will definitely look for it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Of course, there are different cultures and situations, etc.. How about in the US, away from the red carpet events at the Oscars where the Stars don't even own the jewerly they're wearing. Apart from really lovely engagement rings one sees every now and then in the Hamptons or in California, has anybody seen some fancy jewerly on anybody?

Famously, Steve Jobs did not believe in adorning himself. His window does not wear any jewels. Who does? I am just curious.

I personally love to see fancy, high jewerly - on other people :) I'd love to see more! Especially on men! :)

I assume big baubles are worn amongst the elite in their homes, villas, mansions, yachts, etc alone or while entertaining other elites. As such jewelry can be worn safely and discretely.

But this is the thing. Nobody wants to be bothered. Nobody wants to take care of "things", look out for "things". People prefer comfy t-shirts and soft leggings these days. Maybe a Banksy artwork :D if they have the baubles, they do not show them.

Nobody wants to be bothered?
Perhaps nobody you are personally aware of.

Since people vary I suspect that includes the uber-rich.

Are you saying I am too poor to know anything about high end jewels and their maintenance? :D I guess you're soo right! :D I neither know Elon Musk (wearing zero jewels) not Jeff Bezos (ditto again!) nor Warren Buffet (zero adornments)...

I seriously know anything at all about precious stones, gemstones etc. All, I know is that it is extremally cumbersome to always lock your things in a safe. And then think: could someone rip out the safe altogether from the wall?...Too much work!

I don't want the maid cleaning my diamonds. Would it be healthy or considerate for anybody to expose people to something worth their yearly salary? Just asking. Why don't you elucidate me on what people want to be bothered with? You seems to know it so much better :D I would really love to find out! :D

And thanks for making me smile!

I don’t think he was saying that at all, just that people all over the globe are all very different. It’s cumbersome *for you* to use safes, and assume people know your yearly salary from your jewellery etc, that’s just *your* personal perception.

You’re applying your own personal (and truth be told very very limited) perceptions and experience, universally. Never a good idea.

There are many places on this planet where people walk around dripping in gold, diamonds and designer jewellery / fashion and it’s the norm. And yes, they go home and put it in their safes or just throw it on the counter top (it depends on the person)!

Point being, people are different. Peoples views to wealth and jewellery and how ‘bothered’ they are with it all, is all very individual.

Edit to add: you’re on a luxury jewellery forum and worrying about not seeing accessorising/jewellery examples from Elon musk and Jeff bezos :D maybe stick to just appreciating their business sense and look for the jewels inspiration elsewhere?!

This really made me curious. I travel a lot. So, where exactly is it a norm "to drip in gold, diamonds and designer jewerly"? :D Haven't seen that particular "norm" anywhere in Europe, US or Canada. But then again, I've seen some BBC "work conditions" documentaries and I will simply not go to Dubai, Quatar or anywhere near. So, for all I know, it might be the norm there. Wouldn't know.

You're right about one things. Assumptions are not helpfull. And you make many about me, mostly inaccurate :D Do you know what beats safes, security and houses under surveillance? Having a life that does not need any of that at all :) I am just talking from my own experience. Maybe you feel differently. Let's not be some "internet enemies" over difference of opinions.

To get back to the original point. I simply do not see anybody wearing the high style jewerly featured in the exhibition and I am asking where do people see the future of that?

I think you misunderstand, what assumptions did I make about you? And don’t worry, it’s not even within my realm of thinking to have an internet enemy :D this is just an interesting discussion we’re having :)

To get back to the original point, *you* don’t see anybody wearing elaborate jewellery - you take this as a universal fact then ask the question - what does that mean for the future of elaborate jewellery.

It means Nothing. Nada. Zilch

Precisely because whilst *you* may not see electorate jewellery being worn - but being worn, it for sure is. From personal experience, since you asked, yes in London, parts of America, Greece, certainly all over the middle East just to name a few general places.

Is my experience of seeing fancy jewellery being worn anymore valid then your lack of experience of it? Nope. But you asked and seemed to refuse to accept, your POV was not universal.

(Apologies if my use of asterisk comes across as rude/brisk, I’m doing it because I’m posting from my phone and can’t bold/italicise).

I'm not saying anything other than what I have posted.

You're welcome, for making you smile.

On last Friday Vera and me had a personal guided tour of the LA natural history collection on loan from Robert Procop after exhibition hours.
Vera is editing the videos we made.
Un believable collection of jewels including many gems of the largest or finest quality gems.
Huge alexandrite and color change sapphires perfectly illuminated to show the color changes etc.
I think you are all too late to see it now.

I can only guess the total value in $100m ranges!

Wow, I bet the photos don’t do these justice, but a 10 carat demantoid and a six carat Benitoite l! Wow! I love the Benitoite mineral specimen behind the faceted gem.

Ive seen that benitoite specimen all over IG. Truly exceptional piece. And the gem is not shabby either of course. Thanks for sharing these closeups.

My absolute dream mineral specimen would be a perfect Benitoite triangle. Gorgeous rare shaped crystal!

Heres another really interesting one, with three minerals that are classic for this deposit - benitoite, neptunite, joaquinite. Amazing aesthetic appeal imo. Though the benitoites are not top color nor particularly gemmy it seems.175b5951fd5761d5668bba90c380ef20.jpg

That crystal shape is exceedingly rare in the mineral world, and that’s what makes it so rare and valuable, despite not being gem quality. Beautiful!

There is a series of videos in this article highlighting some of the museum’s collection.

TL that is the permanent collection.
Robert Procop exhibition there included 80ct diamonds alexandrite and other very rare and valuable gems, loose and set.
These feature gems are all around 100ct
