I've had my current setting for over a year. It is a temporary setting until i can decide on a "forever" setting...wether it remain a solitaire or become a 3 stone type. we shall see...

My first criteria in designing/selecting a setting is comfort and wearability.
I prefer a low profile setting. I consider the ease in which i need to wear and remove gloves of all types: disposable gloves, winter gloves, gardening gloves, household gloves, driving gloves, workout gloves, etc...
I don't care to bang it around which i find when wearing a piece of jewelry or wristwatch that protrudes can be prone to it.

I wear my rings 24/7 I do not wish to baby them in any way. they should be easy to clean in a solution, ultrasonic, etc...

hope that helps

I'm just now getting into all this but I have a number of different rings. I have one halo, one in a pave band and three solitaires. I really just wanted a pave band when I got the halo ring which was my first purchase and also my only b&m purchase (won't do that again). While I wish I had gotten just a pave band I do like it. My radiant on the pave band is probably my favorite setting. I'm also a big fan of a slim solitaire setting but other statistics vary depending on what im setting in it. 20200902_121305.jpg
Radiant 1.41 K VS2 on a classic pave rose gold setting from With Clarity
20200902_121321.jpg
My 0.86 ct mrb on a petite solitaire setting also from With Clarity. Probably my favorite solitaire setting.

The only thing about the solitaire settings is that while I prefer a thinner band towards the stone I actually like a thicker band on the underside. The setting from with clarity is 1.8 mm and squared off so its pretty thick and substantial but still appears thinner towards the stone.

As for do they fit my personality? Probably. Is there anything that bothers me over time? Only if the gold wears too thin which is why I prefer a thicker bamd at the bottom.

I have had my CVB Jovyn for about 3 years. I wanted a sleek yet sturdy solitaire setting that was set low, as I am super clumsy and knock my rings into everything. Sometimes I think I may have gone overboard on the low-ness, bc i think it looks smaller than it did in its previous setting. Also, the basket is very thick and difficult to clean. But I still love it, and am so glad I have it!!

EDIT: Yes, I believe it reflects my personality; feminine but unbreakable!!

I have an OEC in a solitaire setting. I love it, but I initially had it set like this just until I could decide what my forever setting would be. But I have no idea what that is! I would love something really beautiful and special, but I don’t know...9E866CBC-11EF-4DE2-87F5-09CA07DF39C2.jpeg84FDC40D-6799-4240-A134-11FBB40A1F2B.jpegCA60176F-E7CA-4E58-8066-19C9AF07551A.jpeg

Nala, as someone who has reset the same diamond four different times... I love this post and will eagerly devour the answers! Lol! Solidarity my friend. It is hard sometimes. #firstworldproblems #pserproblems

Due to some misconception that led to misguided loyalty, it took me 10 years before I change the setting for my 1.19ct EC which I wear as a RHR.

It was originally set in a solitaire setting without much input from me except to specify for the stone to be bezel-set (big mistake and I have learnt from it ever since) that was too high and the band too narrow for my liking. I wore it with a 2mm plain Titanium band with it to increase finger coverage and made it look lower on the finger.

I eventually opted for an air line/gap diamond halo with a wider comfort profile band, set as low as possible, after nearly 10 years of research by trawling as many diamond halo rings I could find on the internet!

It provides much better finger coverage and looks more substantial and blingy. It is my EC's forever home.

It's been 5 years since I had the diamond reset, and am still in love with it every time I take it out from its hiding place. Just looking at it would cheer me up!

Here is a pic of its original solitaire setting with the 2mm Titanium band, shown here on the RH ring finger as I was not able to wear them on the middle RH finger at the time due to weight gain:

The stone is its forever home on the day I collected the new ring from the local jeweller that reset the stone for me (please excuse the dry hand - it was a very cold February day!):

I am definitely a solitaire girl, no doubt. I love a low set, 8 prong, well made, impeccably finished solitaire with just a bit of pizzazz to make it interesting. I definitely LOVE my EW Margot but it will be unset waiting for the HG stone. In the meantime, my CvB Dahlia will hold my upgrade stone. It is beautiful as well and meets the same parameters in a bit different way. In any case, I learned that if you aren't crazy about the stone, then the setting shouldn't dictate keeping it.

I ADORE my setting. I got it in 2014 and feel the exact same way about it now as I did then. I wanted something classic, yet modern. I hate bezels and big baskets. I told Wink I wanted the stones to be naked, naked, naked. I want to be able to see the whole stone(s) all the time. Absolutely nothing about it bothers me. I couldn't afford a CBI the size I REALLY wanted, so I made the setting blingier with small stones and it still satisfies.

I do think it reflects my overall aesthetic and personality, classic yet not stodgy. If I were to advise someone else looking to choose a setting, it would be to look at a LOT of settings. Over time, one will note that they are attracted to a specific style over others. Once one knows that, one can look at more specific styles and try some on. In my case, I found no fine u-prongs in any of the stores I visited, but that's the style that appealed to me the most. @Wink nailed it on the first shot.

I've had my current ring/setting for a year. It's the Bea setting from Victor Barbone, but there are many others who make similar settings. I don't have pictures, but it's easy to look up. I wanted a delicate yellow gold setting with at least 6 claw prongs, so it fit the bill perfectly.

Before this, I had an MRB in a white gold knife edge setting with 6 rounded prongs. It felt too plain, in part because the stone was on the smaller side and not exactly a showstopper in terms of performance. The setting also wasn't particularly well-made, which makes a big difference. I love a lot of rings with this size stone and this general setting design (obviously - that's why I picked it), but there was just nothing about MY ring that made me think "wow!" Also, I didn't find the knife edge very comfortable, even after wearing it for years.

So for the current one, I wanted an OEC with a setting that would complement the older cut, something a little bit more romantic but simple enough that I can imagine it still being exactly my taste in 30 years. I LOVE it. It looks like a cohesive piece where the stone and setting are just right for each other. Not sure it reflects my personality, but it's definitely the style I *hope* my overall style is.

Also, when I picked this, I was undecided about whether I wanted a solitaire and a 3-stone. I ultimately chose the solitaire because my husband saw this particular ring and said "that's the one!" Seeing him get really into a ring made it feel more special. I still want a 3-stone one day, though :)

The bad thing about this setting is that such thin bands are prone to not retaining their shape. If my fingers swell a lot, I just have to wait for it to go away because I can't be tugging on this thing. But aside from taking it off, I don't worry about it. I don't wear it when I ride horses, but that's about the only everyday activity for which I routinely remove it.

In terms of advice, I would say that you should consider your lifestyle and how practical the ring will be. How comfortable is it? Do you want to wear it all the time? Are you going to be taking it on and off a lot? Can it be resized? Do you want to pick a setting and hope that's that's forever or are you okay updating the setting if your tastes change? In other words, how timeless does it have to be? Is it the right setting for your particular stone? What other rings do you want to be able to wear with it, if any? Do you want it to sit flush with a particular band?

I’ve had my setting since last November. I pretty much love everything about it. It’s 8 prongs, cathedral shank, not too thin, has rose gold and platinum and a few diamonds. The donut is big and high enough that I don’t have to worry about it scuffing when worn next to a diamond band, although I usually wear a spacer anyway. It’s a solitaire with a twist and unique because no one has one like it. At least as far as I know.

And to answer the other questions- I would advise others to look at a lot of different settings and try all of them on. There is nothing wrong with getting a temporary setting in the meantime. It’s better than making a costly mistake.
In my case I have a few different rings including a few halos and a solitaire, so I didn’t want to get the same styles again. I wanted this ring to be different.

I don’t know if my ring represents my personality. I just know what I liked and incorporated all the elements into my ring.

You'd be surprised how comfortable or easy to wear some settings are over what you imagine would be better. I ordered this stone from James Allen and had it set in a basic setting of theirs. I figured I'd upgrade it later on. I loved the setting from day one, but I was a little annoyed by how thin the band was (about 1.5mm at widest).
Fast forward one year and I find it's one of the easiest rings to put on and off and I barely notice it on my finger. As pointy as the marquise is, the lower profile means I hardly get it caught in anything. It's my everyday ring now. It's a big contrast to my chunky ring I had my oval set in (about 4mm). I love its weight but it's probably the least comfortable ring to wear and it is now my special occasion ring. With my next ring I'm leaning towards a thinner band, 2.5mm at the most.

I can only suggest getting some cheap plated rings to play around with and see what they feel like during the day.

How long have you had it?

15 years.

What criteria did you use to select it?

Well built yet delicate, no chunky metal work.

Does anything bother you over time and if so, what would you advise others when choosing their setting?

Nop, wouldn't change a thing.

Also, do you think that it reflects your overall personality?

YES.

Pictures would be a bonus!

Yup, Same as my personality ...Plain,cheap & simple.

I asked my mother how she picked out her ring setting since she’s had the same one almost ever since she got married I believe.

She told me that in her opinion the best thing for an engagement ring is to get something that is as classic (but also reasonably sturdy) as possible. She went with a solitaire on a not super-thin band. That style is resizable if her fingers get bigger (they never did) and super classic - white gold, medium height, 2.5mm band). She dresses it up with other jewelry (though rarely wears a band) and it goes with everything even if she wears a different color gold. She’s a pretty classic person so it’s very in line with her tastes. It’s a solitaire on a band so it always looks substantial but not ostentatious, and it won’t ever go out of style.

I am a solitaire girl but I love my current temporary setting. Maybe I love it knowing it is temporary IDK. It's been temporary since August 2018 so 2 years now and counting. I plan on resetting to an 8 prong solitaire setting at some point in the future. I had hoped for an authentic antique setting but I don't think it is going to happen. We shall see. In the meantime I love the temp setting and am in no rush.

What I love about the current setting.
-Feminine
-It has presence
-Blingy
-And somehow it seems delicate/elegant in appearance. Which I know is crazy since it is such a big setting but IRL that is how it feels to me. It dresses up my diamond and looks like a lovely and feminine flower. Just appeals to me for whatever reason.

It definitely reflects my personality despite being a solitaire girl because it is feminine and flirty and fun with a big presence which is just like me. But shy and introverted at times too so obviously it doesn't fit all aspects of my personality lol. Let's just say she fits the fun aspects of my personality.

I’ve had my ER since he proposed, almost 4 years ago.
Inspired by my favorite era, Art Deco, and by one of my favorite heirloom pieces, my Great Aunt’s Shield Ring.
I wanted something vintage/Art Deco style. Durable. Timeless.
Feminine.
I was torn between the style that was chosen, and the 3 stone style. I love both.
DH chose my current ER because he loves the artistry and detail involved. He finds it to be more romantic.

This ring fits my personality perfectly, but it also fits our personality, together, as a couple.

Everything about it has significant meaning to both of us, and the story behind the proposal attached to this ring only adds to its priceless quality.

I recently approached DH with the idea of a reset from solitaire to 3 stone.
He was less than supportive; he is very attached to the ring I have, and he doesn’t want me to switch it.
Not that I would discard the original; I’d rather cut off my arm with a butter knife. Just something different that is my second favorite choice. I have decided it’s not worth pushing the issue, if it disappoints him, or makes him question his choice. I truly adore the setting I have, and a change would be a serious adjustment.

Advice I would give to anyone seeking a forever piece: let it speak to you. Feel compelled to purchase, not obligated. Don’t settle, and don’t talk yourself into it. You’l know, when you see it.

I have had my setting for over 16 years. I love that it is almost a solitaire but with a little bit of baguette Sides. I wanted a very slim profile that would make a small center stone pop. Since then we have upgraded the diamond but not the setting. I still love it and would not change it!

I'll chime in. I love my setting and I know it's ugly to 99% of people.
How long have you had it?

I've had if for 4 years now?
What criteria did you use to select it?

It was originally my grandmothers. After she died, her children split her jewelry and my mom picked this because the center stone was a sapphire and my sister wanted the sapphire for her ering. That left the setting and 2 side stones. The general opinion was that is was ugly but I loved it. So I had my husband put an oec in the center.
Does anything bother you over time and if so, what would you advise others when choosing their setting?

YES! We think the center stone and the sides were added to the band after it was made so the spacing is not at all even. They put them where the band allowed and while it looks pretty even from the top, the side view is totally wonky. It does bother me. But there isn't a way of doing it that keeps what I like about the band so I just sorta shrug it off.

Also, do you think that it reflects your overall personality?
Yes. I mean, I am a chunky jewelry girl, thin bands and delicate stuff just disappear on me. So my style in jewelry is big and bold and I am a bigger lady and sassy so it lines up. What I love most about my setting is that it's 2 loops that are interconnected but retain their own identity, which I think is a great symbol for marriage. I always say my husband is the plain loop and I am the diamond loop.

The progression of my settings:

Engaged with a .55 zales ring. Cathedral, no taper.

5 year anniversary: with Pricescope as my guide I got in touch with WF for a semi-custom solitaire to house a 1.543 carat ACA. I believe it has a sienna head with a legato shank. Swoopy and simple.

10th? Anniversary: “upgraded” the setting to a verragio halo. Found myself not wearing it. Too flashy for my lifestyle. I loved to look at it while it rested in my jewelry dish.

12th anniversary: upgraded my 1.543 to a 2.67 ACA. Put a new head on the old solitaire setting with plans to find “the one”. Still happily wearing that ring. My only regret is that my wedding band rubs on the ER. I wish I had sent my WB into them to make sure the rings would sit flush.

Amelia has been on my finger for over 2 years now, and I love her. I love her even more after changing out the original 4-prong WG head for a 6-prong platinum head. The only change I may make down the road is changing out the basic head for something custom, but I don't even know what I might want at this point.after01.jpg

Love all of the pictures of the different settings and diamonds posted here. So here's my contribution.

How long?
Over 11 yrs and counting.

What criteria did you use to select?
Partner and myself are romantics at heart. Decided on a prong setting with a custom gallery of love hearts in 18ct WG. Wore it consistently until I started working full-time. Now I don't wear as often as I want to given my job (LOTS of hand-washing), but when I do, it still makes me happy!!

Does anything bother you over time and if so, what would you advise others when choosing their setting?
I feel if you want to wear something consistently, consider what you do and how you would wear it daily. There was a consideration on the 10-yr anniversary to redesign the ring to a more low-profile, bezel and setting in platinum so I could wear it all the time. However, I loved the gallery too much I couldn't bring myself to remake it. Instead got a bezel set, platinum, diamond eternity ring, which I wear everyday and that I find more practical for the job. I add the original engagement ring to the stack pretty much on any time-off.

Does it reflect personality?
I feel mine has always done so, so whatever you choose I think will reflect you well, regardless. Yes, styles and tastes may change over time, but that's why you CAN remake things if you want to. =)2 Or add more.. ;)2

And here are the pictures of the ring in question....

Napa I think some of us are just always going to be swapping until we find perfection. Stones and settings lol. My new stone is an O, because I want the warmth, and I love the look. But who knows if I will feel the need to go icy white. I doubt I would go bigger at it’s a 2.5 carat and I don’t really want bigger. As for settings I have one stone that is a .59 in a floral
halo that is PERFECT. I don’t know if it’s this stone in this setting but I’m actually happy. Every other setting and stone I end up switching out, losing money, blah blah blah. I think maybe either a CVB (leaning that way) or a Van Craeynest for my 2.5 O, still deciding. I hope that if I go for an expensive setting I will keep it. But no guarantees. I haven’t found my “big stone” perfect combination yet.

My Art Deco diamond ring was reset just after purchase as the setting was aged and too frail for a klutz like me.
My original re set was the two smaller emerald cuts either side of the main EC and tension bezel set, the bezel went all around all 3 diamonds. After the big M I put on weight and got all puffy and the ring, because of how they diamonds were against each other, couldn’t be resized large enough to fit my now size 7.5 finger. So for more than a year I didn’t wear it.
I decided to get her reset and designed my “dream” setting on the things that mattered to me.
As mentioned before I’m a klutz and I’m always bashing my hand/ fingers on things and in things so I wanted a “flat“ setting, close to my finger. However I wanted the ring elevated enough to wear both a wedding band and eternity ring on either side (design aspect I failed on with my first reset). I wanted the Art Deco style and I wanted a balanced look. Originally I was thinking round diamonds down the shoulders but the jeweller showed me a matching pair of Kite? shape and I loved them. They are set into the shoulders.
I am still so in love with this ring.
It still makes me smile when I look down on it. Of late, I’be been changing “engagement rings” around and I especially love when after a month or so of not seeing her, I put her on my finger again.

How long have you had it?

7 years.

What criteria did you use to select it?

I had 2 failed settings before having the forever setting handmade. The diamond kept popping out. I asked for something that sat high so it wouldn't chew into my eternity ring, to be the exact dimensions of my wedding ring only 2.5mm instead of the 3mm that my wedding band is, heavy, comfy & sturdy enough to take my hands on lifestyle & constant wear.

Does anything bother you over time and if so, what would you advise others when choosing their setting?

I did have to have two extra claws added to the front & a brace to the underside, as a couole of times i bashed it & made the stone rock slightly. The jeweller who made it put in a completely new head 5 years ago & touch wood it has been perfect ever since. But nothing bothers me about it. I would advise that you really take your time to get to know your stone, what you love about it & how best it would be displayed. Also for me, my lifestyle dictated strong & secure.

Also, do you think that it reflects your overall personality?

Yes, completely. I am a relatively unfussy woman with pretty classic tastes (think solitaire pendant & studs) and a perfectly made solitaire will always have my heart. My diamond is such a pretty stone & i am still happy to let it speak for itself.

How long have you had it?
I've had my setting for almost three years, purchased when I bought my first CBI (from my favorite person that I've never met, @Wink). The lovely @LaylaR patiently held my hand through months of indecision and crankiness, as I nitpicked everything I saw. Whilst searching for the perfect setting, she cleverly put together a shank from one company and a head from another and I was home free.

What criteria did you use to select it?
I knew I wanted a simple solitaire setting--no halos or multi-stones. My overriding theme was to highlight the diamond, not the setting. I like, but don't love, the classic Tiffany and Tiffany-type settings (I hate knife edge, even softened knife edge and I don't care for the slight "chunkiness" of the Tiffany type shanks near the head of the setting). I also love a subtle cathedral and a reverse taper (thinner towards the diamond). I wanted it delicate but not thin, 6-prong, white gold and with sturdy but not blob-y prongs. I also wanted to keep the price reasonable, so that most of my money was going towards the diamond

Does anything bother you over time and if so, what would you advise others when choosing their setting?
I initially thought this setting would be temporary. I envisioned something a little fancier and more expensive. My dream setting is an Erika Winters Margot or Grace cathedral. The setting I have has a peg head, which some people dislike. It's still sturdy because the cathedral ends provide plenty of structure, but if you look closely and if you're a self respecting Price Scope-r, you can tell that the head is soldered onto the shank. This might bother some. I also found that I was much less satisfied with the setting when it held my first CBI, a .82 carat stone. When I upgraded to my 1.23 carat CBI, HPD had to replace the head to fit the larger stone. I was surprised at how much nicer the setting looked with a bigger diamond.

Also, do you think that it reflects your overall personality?
I think it reflects my personality because it's classic, understated and exhibits distinct subtle features. I'm a typical Virgo--quiet, picky, meticulous and practical. I'd never say never, but I don't think I'll upgrade to a more expensive setting, at this point. I might want to spread the love around and buy some colored stone rings or stacking bands instead.Carved Band 1.jpgCarved Band 3.jpg.
