Hi everyone,

I asked a few days ago for a quote from LOGR about a split shank diamond setting I'd had my eye on. He got back to me today and actually gave me a great price -- I was very surprised as it was better than I'd expected. I had requested a quote on another ring a few weeks ago that was very simple/less expensive and he had quoted me a lot more for it. I'm concerned though because I told him it was a "cushion oval" cut and he wrote back that it was for my "pear shape stone." I'll have to remind him that it's for a cushion oval and not a pear -- I hope he won't increase the price!

My question for those of you with experience with LOGR is this:

*Is ring sizing accurate? At a local jewelry store they said I was a 4.5, but a 5 fit comfortably as well.

*Should I stop calling it "cushion oval" and just call it a cushion cut? I'm concerned I'm confusing them.

*Any tips/suggestions for working with LOGR and custom design? Anything I should know, ask, or communicate to them before ordering?

*I offered to send them a picture of my stone (to make sure they understood its shape) but they didn't acknowledge it. Should I request his e-mail address and send a pic anyway?

*Once I receive the setting...I am not sure where to go to have it set. I went to a couple local jewelry stores and they quoted me between $150-$200 to set it (I'm in Atlanta) The only other alternative I found was Fast Fix Jewelry in the mall for $40. I don't know what to do/where to go. Do most of y'all go to a local place or do you ship the stone & setting to someone elsewhere and have them set it? It's a sapphire, so I'm hoping it shouldn't be too challenging to set as I heard someone here say they were almost fool-proof.

Any tips/advice with working with LOGR would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all so much!

I haven't worked with them in a very very very long time, and have moved on to Lanbo and his stores. I did so because I liked the metal work on the Lanbo settings better, and I didn't have to worry about cloudy diamonds if I didn't pay for a VS upgrade, which is something you had to worry about with LOGR. That being said, in the early days, when I did order from LOGR (we're talking at least four years ago), I bought some settings that would cost a fortune elsewhere, and are just amazing in quality, diamond size and quality, for the price. I had noticed that the quality went down, but the prices went up. I hope they changed, and it sounds like perhaps they may have made their prices more competitive with the myriad of other Chinese-based ebay mounting sellers.

I found the ring size to be accurate, and I didn't have too much of a problem communicating with them. I would just use simple English verbiage, nothing too complex, and short sentences. I would also put in a list what I want, and have them corroborate it in writing. For example:

item xxxxxxxxx [ebay description here]
14K ROSE gold
size 5
VS diamond upgrade
No diamonds on shank
split shank
full cut diamonds

I hope that helps, and I wish you the best of luck that you get a ring made to your satisfaction. I think being charged $100 to $200 to set a sapphire is outrageous. My jewelers have charged anywhere from $35 to $55 to set a stone, and I live in a very large urban area. However, please make sure it is a good jeweler that knows what they are doing and not someone that could potentially harm your stone during the setting process.

I cannot advise you to go custom with LOGR. I wanted a small customization on my order, namely to have my ring resized. They didn't do it, then wanted me to keep the ring instead of returning it. I returned it and they did send me my refund.

If they can't get a simple resizing right, I can't imagine that they will get your order completely correct. Your spidy senses are tingling with this latest communication from them, and rightfully so.

My question for those of you with experience with LOGR is this:

*Is ring sizing accurate? At a local jewelry store they said I was a 4.5, but a 5 fit comfortably as well. Yes but don't forget that you need to size up a little if the band width is wide.

*Should I stop calling it "cushion oval" and just call it a cushion cut? I'm concerned I'm confusing them. Yes. It's either an oval or a cushion cut - they are very different and this will be incredibly confusing especially as their first language isn't English.

*Any tips/suggestions for working with LOGR and custom design? Anything I should know, ask, or communicate to them before ordering? Send photos and very clear descriptions.

*I offered to send them a picture of my stone (to make sure they understood its shape) but they didn't acknowledge it. Should I request his e-mail address and send a pic anyway? Critical that you send this with accurate dimensions that say XXmm height, XXmm width and XXmm depth.

*Once I receive the setting...I am not sure where to go to have it set. I went to a couple local jewelry stores and they quoted me between $150-$200 to set it (I'm in Atlanta) The only other alternative I found was Fast Fix Jewelry in the mall for $40. To avoid confusion I've embedded answers above in bold and italics.

One thing you haven't asked about and I wholly agree with TL, is that with LOGR if you don't upgrade the diamonds to VS, you may get cloudy/grey diamonds. If you upgrade the quality is normally much better. If the listing is already for VS you won't have to upgrade and it's likely that they will be ok. Check the listing but it's worth paying the extra.

I purchased 2 settings from LOGR, probably about 3 or 4 years ago. The workmanship and pricing then were very good. As precaution, I upgraded the diamonds and had no issue with having LOGR resize my rings. The fit seemed accurate. I have not looked at LOGR since then because their pricing went up and quality went down but do not know if they have improved lately. English is not their first language so keep your emails very brief and to the point.

Thank you all for your honest and helpful feedback! Does anyone know how much they charge for upgraded diamonds? Was it $200 per carat? Mine only has .11 carats of diamonds, so I don't think it would cost much to upgrade. Thank you again!! :)

I don't recall the exact amount but it wasn't much; it didn't increase the final price so high that I balked.

It depends, if you're getting larger melee, the cost per carat will be more than tiny tiny melee. You can ask for a quote from him. It used to be a standard price per carat, but then that changed.

He says it's is $48 for the upgraded diamonds on this setting (tiny melee). Do you think it's worth it? It would still be well within my budget.

For me, there's nothing worse than cloudy diamonds, so I'd do it.

Yes I would upgrade the diamonds. For $48 it is well worth it.

I have never paid more then $50 to have a CS set into a setting. Try finding other jewerly stores. I think Mom and Pop places are wonderful and typically charge less to set sapphires.

As far as LOGR goes use simple english with them. Remember they are based out of China and English isnt' there first language so they will have no idea what an oval cushion is....I'm not even sure I understand what an oval cushion is from your description. If you have the mm size of the stone I would just send them that. I have several rings that were custom by LOGR (also several years ago) and they are beautiful.
