For those whose wedding bands don''t sit flush with their engagement rings

Hey, Folks:

I''m considering my wedding band options for my three-stone emerald cut engagement ring. As you likely know, my options are:

1) have a special ring made to sit flush against the engagement ring, but that would look, well, odd alone.
2) wear a band that doesn''t sit flush

I''m inclined to go with the second option, since I won''t always want to wear my engagement ring AND I sort of like the old-fashioned style of an unflushed setting. I''m thinking of a narrow eternity-style diamond band.

For those who don''t have flushed rings, is it uncomfortable? Do you wish that you''d gone with something flush?

thank you! Mary

Thanks, Dave:

I may decide to go with two rings. I guess I''m sorta sentimental, and want to wear the same band all the time. I know - sora silly.

I just read another post in response to a similar question that warned that wearing rings that don''t sit flush can end up damaging prongs. I may try to find something curved.

I'm having a thin eternity band made that doesn't sit flush. It will sit about an 1/8th inch from the main body of the E ring. I agree with you that I look the old fashioned non-flush look.

I am not convinced that the ring cannot be made to allow a simple band sit next to it. A traditional basket setting would not allow this, but perhaps some solution can be found without setting the diamonds too high ? After all, a platinum band is less than 2mm thick and there could be no metal under the keel of the emerald cuts allowing the band to go under them and next to the ring''s shank.

I do not know if such sets are available ready-made, but then... there aren''t too many options for three-stone emerald cut rings off the rack either. If you do order a custom setting, why not

My rings do not sit flush and it is not uncomfortable at all. When my e-ring and wedding band were made I knew they would not sit flush. I did this intentionally.

My e-ring is a princess solitaire and my wedding band is a plain platinum band. Each is 2mm. I was aiming for comfort and practicality.

The e-ring stone is set very low and I wanted to be able to wear my wedding band alone without it being a weird shape (to accommodate the e-ring). I also chose not to have any stones in my wedding band so when I did have to wear it without the e-ring I would not have to worry about losing stones or damaging prongs.

Eventually I would like to get some kind of princess eternity band to wear with the set. (But first I''m working on an earring project)

Hi, Jo and rockupied (love the name):

Did the jeweler say that wearing unflushed rings could potentially damage the prongs are your engagement ring? Like I said, I read that on another post, and I''m trying to learn more.

thank you both! Mary

Mine don''t sit flush either, and not, it''s absolutely not uncomfortable. A lot of people around here make a really big deal out of the rings sitting flush, but I don''t think it should be a big deal. The gap between my rings looks exactly like the picture Rockupied postefd, and I''ve polled my friends, and they don''t even notice it at all when I''m just wearing the rings in real life. Things look magnified in pictures.

I can''t remember who said it, but one of the regular posters here once wrote that she liked the look of a non-flush set because it looked like, ho-hum, I''ve got so many beautiful pieces of jewellery/diamonds that I can''t keep track! I loved that.

I bought a Peter Atman 5 stone 1.5 carat total platinum band to sit flush with my engagement ring. 2 CT.

I don''t wear either anymore and am trying to figure out what to do with them.

I searched high and low to find the perfect flush mount ring and paid a lot for it (3,500)

I would probably sell it for 2,500 or so. It is absolutely gorgeous. [email protected]

When I see e-rings & wedding rings that don''t sit flush - Immediately, I think - newlyweds!

By attrition, the rings will sit much flusher as the years go by. View it as a right of passage.

The name originated from my now husband. Once I started "learning" about (becoming obsessed with) diamonds he referred to me as being "rockupied".

The jeweler I worked with had no input, opinions, advice or suggestions. Essentially they were purely the middle-man in my obtaining the work from the designer I chose.

My wedding band doesn''t touch the prongs. I guess it COULD be a problem if say the wedding band was platinum and the e-ring was white gold?

Good thing I had my camera at work today… I mean, oops, I REALLY should get back to work today!

Mary,

I''ve had my rings, which are not flush, for five and a half years and my prongs are still in great shape. My rings are gold and my prongs are platinum, if this makes any difference.

Here''s mine. Not a great picture, but from the top it almost looks like I have a split shank ring. I used to mind the gap, but I''ve gotten used to it and now think it looks pretty cool!

I agree with the previous posters that there''s something a little more charming and natural looking about rings that don''t sit exactly flush. I wouldn''t want a HUGE gap, but none of the pics posted here are huge gaps at all and I think they look great.

I used to be obsessed with the Ritani Endless Love set - it sits exactly flush, and all of the little diamonds in the bands are set by computer to be ultra precisely spaced, etc. In person, it looked TOO precise and perfect and I didn''t care for it. It looked like it was made by computer, and didn''t have a lot of the charm that I would want my ring to have.

If the band of an e-ring is such that a normal straight band naturally sits pretty flush, that''s the best case scenario I think, but I am not a fan at all of the wedding bands that are carved in weird patterns to follow every little contour of the e-ring. I wouldn''t want to wear one of those alone!

I don''t know about the w-bands that just curve very gently to follow the contour of the e-ring. I haven''t seen anyone wearing one of those alone, so I''m not sure how they''d look, but perhaps they''d look OK?

Mary,

I originally tried the ring on a Tiffany. They said that no there wouldn''t be any problem with wearing the two rings. The only problem would be if somehow the diamonds from my E ring rubbed against the diamond in the eternity band. That could cause diamond chipping. That would never happen.

Good on you peoples.

I am often asked to cut a groove into freshly finished ring to allow for the wedder to sit flush. I really don''t like that practice, not the least for the unsympathetic lines ruining my nice straight claws. I really like the analogy where the wearing is a right of passage. I am keeping that one.

On the other hand I don''t mind chopping and changing the wedder to match the e-ring. It wouldn''y suit any of the rings here - you have done well.

Wishbone settings go well with fitted wedders wishbone/wedder

Jo I hope you don''t indend to use a design where the diamonds will rub!

Thank you SO much, everyone!!!!

I loved seeing everyone''s unflushed rings - they''re all very pretty!

Buster - the band that you''re lady wears is the look I''m hoping for. Is it a Facet''s brand that you purchased from Signed Pieces?

Smiles for all, Mary (and Happy New Year)

I don''t have any pix :
But I LOVE non-flush. LOVE it. There is just something about it. I''m not into matching.

Hi again, Buster:

I went back to your posts about the facets band, and could see that you were both very happy with the purchase!

I hope to visit NYC later this year - is their store in the city?

Happy New Year, Mary

Hi Mary,
Yes, they are in the heart of the diamond district (don't let that scare you!). They have a nice booth in a larger jewelery store, and their address is 15 West 47th Street, Booth 43. I had a bit of a time finding it at first, but if you have trouble just ask some of the dealers in that area and they'll tell you where to find them. I worked with Jerry, who was EXCELLENT! Best of luck and Happy New Years!

Buster

Edited to add: It's in between 5th and 6th Ave.

Perhaps not "flush" but this should get close. It is a solitaire, but a three stone version should be feasible. This type of prongs I had in mind writing the previous post...

I love to see my rings somewhat apart...can enjoy both better that way!! I''ve been thinking about something w/split shank as a right hand ring......love that look!
