Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I have an antique French cut sapphire and platinum eternity band from my great grandmother (circle late 1800s-early 1900s) that I am looking to reset as it’s too small and also too delicate to be resized.

I reached out to David Klass and got an estimate to recreate the hand engraved platinum, reuse the sapphires and then match a few more sapphires to finish out the larger eternity ring. That came in at $2150. Would love a gut check on pricing and if there are any others you’d recommend I reach out to for quotes. I’m not totally clear on overall value so want to make sure I’m not overspending. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated!

Beautiful ring! How much larger does it have to go? It’s not that it’s an unfair price since labor, cutting sapphires, etc is expensive, but I would have a hard time paying that because I think you could find a pre-loved sapphire ring within that budget and these designs are common. But that’s just me.

That’s kind of my hang up as well. The ring was originally size 3.5 and I had it resized to a 4.25 in 2016, but it’s always been uncomfortable/too tight. That was the highest they could go at the time and they didn’t feel comfortable adjusting it further. Unfortunately, I think it should be a size 5 to be comfortable with my current stack.

If you want to remake it with the same stones for sentimental reasons, then all I can say is that in my experience, DK's prices are very competitive. That being said, no reason why you shouldn't get quotes from others. I generally use DK for anything custom, so can't refer you to anyone else, but I'm sure some of the others here can.

How thick is the ring? I’ve had (and others here) the inside of an eternity band shaved/polished down to gain an extra ~1/2 size.
I feel like the estimate is a tad high when you’re supplying the bulk of the stones.
Good luck!

Thanks! It’s about 2.5mm. Added one more photo for reference.

The estimate came back higher than I was anticipating as well, so that’s helpful. He did mention he could credit me for any leftover platinum value from the first ring, but not sure how much that would turn out to be.

You won’t get much $ at all for the platinum. I had a heavy platinum ring where I was just taking the center stone out I was offered only $200 for scrap. I believe that ring weighed 6 g. it was not my intention to scrap the ring anyway and I kept it but that’s what I was offered.

I recently just had the inside of an eternity ring shaved to fit me.. So you might want to ask about that.

I might look into shaving the inside but if that doesn’t work I might just buy a pretty crystal ring holder and place it in a spot of honour in my bedroom or bathroom and buy a replacement in grandmamas honour as remaking it seems like it may not be cost effective. That said the sapphires are pretty and these rings are not soooo easy to find.

@utlissa316 Looks like you’d be in danger of losing some of the engraving but there may be enough room in there between the edge of the metalwork and the culet of the stones to eke out some size. How much size do you need? Were it my grandmas, I would really attempt to size it as I’m sentimental like that.
@Mreader thank you for your input on scrapping platinum as I will have an extra plat setting soon and I had thought of scrapping it, guess I will keep it or sell… :/

I did a quick search on EBay out of curiosity and band like this can be found under 2K - and DK could do some fancy engraving for you. I know it’s not the same as the sentimental ring, but I like the place of honor idea that Dreamer mentioned.

One example in same mm and size 5.25 for $1590 and this seller tends to be on the higher side price wise.

I'd wear it as a pinky ring. Your grand grandma had tiny fingers, I can't imagine

DK has usually been a little cheaper than the in-person jewelers I have used. I have not sent anything for resetting to any other online vendor so don’t have a comparison for you there..

Crediting you for the platinum may allow a little room to negotiate.
