French scientist denied US entry after critical phone messages found

I am guessing that drug deals are very covert and not out in the open for trustees to observe and that an undocumented person with a back pack can't walk in one door and out the other anymore. The details elude my research to this point.
I think you missed my point. If this was known to have, or be, happening, the police or DEA would certainly have alerted the Trustees. I didn't expect that the Trustees would necessarily figure it out themselves. And of course we all want to see deaths from drugs end. Unfortunately, it won't. It has been going on for decades. If it isn't fentanyl, it is something else. And drugs can be made domestically too. We need more than to stop the influx, or homemade drugs. We need to figure out why people are taking them knowing they can die, and try to address that. And of course, the problem with deadly drugs being mixed with others. IMO that is the only solution,

I’ve just read a handful of articles about fentanyl entry into the US, including from the BBC, DEA and CDC. One or two of them don’t even mention Canada as a source, the ones that do suggest that the quantities are a tiny proportion of the whole, like 0.2%. There is also fentanyl heading INTO Canada from the US.

What struck me was the scale of the problem and the death numbers. Stopping the drugs coming in is one thing, but get rid of fentanyl and I’m sure other things will take its place.

What is being done to help the addicts? Presumably there are lots of programs get them off drugs?

I agree drug issues have been going on for ages but does that mean we should no longer attempt to block them and stop the cartels and syndicates?

Addressing why people are taking them is also important. It is a two-prong problem.

This is a synopsis of an article in The New York Times in February this year:

"In the last six years, Canadian police dismantled 47 fentanyl labs, which also included the largest ever last year in British Columbia. The British Columbia lab had enough material to produce 96 million opioid doses."

This is a huge problem in the USA also and you're probably right that drugs are moving from the US into Canada too. There are many drug treatment programs but the incidence of relapse is high. Keeping our kids away from easy access to drugs is a start.

@Rockdiamond if one follows the law one has nothing to fear.
She embezzled from her company and that sadly put her at risk.
That was her decision to come here and break the law.

Again being able to come here is a privilege. If one cannot obey our laws one has no business being here.

This person paid a fine - made restitution. It was 20 years ago. She’d been in and out of the country many times since.
Is it ok to punish her now????
Then there’s this part of the story:
A few days later, Dixon was transferred to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Wash., where she remains nearly a month later. Her next A few days later, Dixon was transferred to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Wash., where she remains nearly a month later. Her next hearing in immigration court is scheduled for July.

We now live in a country where people are locked up for months for ….. minor visa violations- or decades old convictions….even if the person made retribution.
That’s our new USA folks!!!!
Welcome to it.
So sad that people are now defending these atrocities.
On the bright side- these detention centers are “for profit” so at least someone is making a lot of money on these horrible crimes. Thank god for that.

No I don't personally agree with this action but just stating why it happened. They are getting strict/tough on crime and there are going to be (unintended imo) causalities unfortunately. The fact remains if you come here follow the law. We have too many here who dont respect the law or this country and they dont deserve to be here. IMO. This woman is not one of those but she is unfortunately a casualty of the new "climate" in this country

Does anyone have an update on the French scientist denied entry into the USA?
Last I read the administration’s decision to deny hs entry into the U.S. was because he was in possession of concealed “confidential information” he kept on his electronic device. Not because he criticized the current administration.
I am wondering about an update since this was the title of the thread.

Parking violations.
That is definitely a crime!!!
Don’t respect that meter????
YOURE A CRIMINAL- GET OUT.
( but first let’s lock you up for a few months)
( oh- and that green card … gone)
It’s not even a long slippery slope. We’re there now.
And lots of folks think it’s fine and dandy.
How many of them have never committed an infraction???
So freakin sad.

who are you referring to regarding the parking violations?

his electronic device
It’s a phone.
Do you want the authorities going through your phone????

Missy.
I’m a sarcastic guy. I mentioned parking violations because they are “against the law”
We’ve reached the point where it’s really not important what the specific offense is. If the ICE agent don’t like you , you’re going to jail. Without rights.
The effects are chilling. If you had a friend who was a green card holder… would you recommend traveling??
Who among us has never made a mistake or possibly broken a law??
Littering. Jay walking

Obviously I dont support people being arrested for parking violations. I am happy to calmly discuss anything with you but if we could stick to what is actually happening that would be helpful.

Do I agree with everything this administration is doing?
HELL NO
Do I agree with deporting terrorist supporters?
HELL YES
Do I believe in everyone having the right to due process?
HELL YES

If you had a friend who was a green card holder… would you recommend traveling??

Probably not but I do believe that if one has not committed a crime one has nothing to worry about. But to err on the side of safety if one wants to stay in the USA and one is a green card holder or not a permanent citizen then yeah be wary. Til the dust settles at least. But I do believe with all my heart and soul if you are not a criminal you have nothing to worry about. Unfortunately that poor woman was convicted of a felony and despite it being a long time ago she got caught in the crossfire which is why I wrote the above. I wouldn't recommend traveling right now if you had ever been convicted of a crime

People are being detained with no due process. I don’t see any evidence that this situation will ease at all over the next four years. And based on things that are happening…. May be 400 years
This “long slippery slope “
Starts with persecution of those with which the regime disagrees. Not about crime. They “support terrorists”.
We’re into the territory of punishing people for their beliefs. They’re not terrorists. But they agree with terrorists.
And because of this legal residents are now at great risk.
And our leaders….they’re the ones deciding who’s a terrorist- or even supports a terrorist mentally.
Green card holders are effectively prisoners at this point. Who’s never committed any sort of offense??
And since we’re imprisoning people for their thoughts….. no need to have committed any actual crime.
Welcome to Ameeeikkkka.

Because it is relevant to this thread I will reiterate the situation Mahmoud is in at this time. Since you wrote people are being punished for thought crimes. No.

It is a fact that Khalil Mahmoud handed out flyers supporting Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Since the U.S. is presently in negotiations to free one or more Americans held hostage by Hamas, it is easy (IMO) to understand how Khalil's action could have an adverse impact on foreign policy.

Mahmoud’s arrest was not just about free speech and antisemitism. He broke the rules he agreed to when coming here. Being able to be here was a privilege and not his right.

Additionally, Khalil did not report on his green card application that he worked for two years for UNRWA. UNRWA according to both the U.S. and Israel employed thousands of active Hamas members and some directly involved in the Oct. 7 attack.

So yeah IMO he is not innocent and let's see what due process uncovers. Unless I missed an update and if I did please share it

Missy. Handing out flyers is not a crime. No matter how much we both detest what was in the flyers.
Being part of a UN organization which is linked to Hamas- without being convicted of actually being a terrorist… guilt by association.
If he has done bad things , then that’s one thing.
But none of that has been proven- or even claimed.
And as this thread is highlighting- it’s not just this one case.
We’ve gone down a very bad road.
Don’t let your well justified hate for Hamas make you lose your humanity

He is a terrorist supporter. If you don’t understand that I can’t help you see it. He sure is a terrorist supporter
Let’s see how this plays out in the courts

20 years ago for which she served her time. The admin is now trying to find any excuse - I assume bc of wanting to brag about higher numbers of “criminals” being deported.

We agree. He supports a terrorist group which we both hate.
“Support “ means he agrees with them. He is not a member of the group. We are punishing him for his thoughts- not for actual crimes

David he worked for unrwa. So much more about him that you can easily search. I’m not making more work for Ella

The Antiterrorism Act also created 18 U.S.C. § 2339B, which makes it unlawful, within the United States, or for any person who is subject to the jurisdiction of the United States anywhere, to knowingly provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization that has been designated by the Secretary of State.“

Maybe. See what I wrote above. Everyone who committed a felony in the past should be very careful about traveling now.

Yes I just caught up. Wrote too quickly - others made the same points.

Maybe. See what I wrote above. Everyone who committed a felony in the past should be very careful about traveling now.

Everyone who has even thought about committing a felony. Or approves of another person committing a felony.
Or has unpopular ideas.
Anyone.
I have friends that are now virtual prisoners. Not criminals. But nowadays, if one man (SOS) says you’re a criminal, that’s enough. @missy…. Maybe you’ve never, ever broken a law. Not even a little one. How many of us can say that??
We’re at war ( according to people in charge). That justifies just about anything.

@Rockdiamond with all due respect I don’t see them arresting people for “thoughts”. Please provide evidence. Thank you
I truly believe most of us have the best intentions on PS but again I see facts being twisted. My perspective. Look how the media twists facts purposefully to make Israel the evil perpetrator when anyone who understands history and what’s happening gets just how warped that is. Current leaders aside. Because I believe we’re so much more than who our leaders are.

Folks blocking out the name of whoever politician is not following the spirit of the policy. Keep politicians out of it, discuss the policies.

The US Secretary of State is quoted as saying he will revoke visas and or green cards of “Hamas supporters in America, so they can be deported”
What is a “supporter”? Kind of wide open.
And leaving it in the hands of one man?
There was a time when JDL was considered a terrorist group. Anyone going after KKK supporters?
Selecting one specific group to target. Many of us feel that should bother every one of us. Even if we despise the group.
The First Amendment is designed to protect free speech. This is the antithesis of that.

The First Amendment is designed to protect free speech.

This is not about the first amendment. This is about coming to this country and organizing protests for terrorist groups that want to destroy our way of life here.

Don’t let your well justified hate for Hamas make you lose your humanity

And you’re projecting your humanity and your values on those who want to kill you

Remember this wise quote

""Whoever is merciful to the cruel, in the end is cruel to the merciful."

This is not about the first amendment. This is about coming to this country and organizing protests for terrorist groups that want to destroy our way of life here.
Organizing and protesting are the essence of the first amendment.
We’re both frightened.
Of different things.
I strongly believe our diversity and freedom of speech protect us.
Both are under severe attack right now.

And you’re projecting your humanity and your values on those who want to kill you
Our humanity has been the greatest strength of America. There were always chinks in the armor. Many of our people have been disadvantaged. For many reasons.
But the pretense always existed. Land of the Free. Home of the Brave.
That’s all gone now. Even the pretense of freedom and bravery.
So sad.
So frightening for what’s coming down the line.
