Hi there- my friend just came to me and asked me to help her out with a diamond purchase. She was looking at a forevermark diamond with the following stats:

Carat 0.90
Color G
Negligible fluorescence
Clarity VS2
Cut very good
Polish exc
Sym exc (6.05 - 6.09 x 3.86 mm)
Table 57.4%
Total depth 63.6%
Crown 16.0%- 37.0 *
Star length 53.0%
Girdle 3.0% faceted
Pavilion 42.7%-40.7*
Lower girdle 80.0%

She really likes the diamond overall, but notices that in non-store lighting, the stone pulls darker than a G. Any ideas why? Or do the stats indicate a good stone? Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about forevermark diamonds, but if that is a MRB then it is a bit out of
Ideal cut specs. It is deep at 63.6 (preferred is 60-62) and steep on the crown at 37 (preferred is 34-35). I'm on my phone so can't easily run the numbers through the HCA tool here, but I'd bet that is why it's not holding
up so well once she leaves the extra sparkly lights at the store and gets under real lighting. Your marked as "trade" and I don't know if that was a mistake but do you have access to an idealscope to check performance?

As for the color question, who was the diamond graded by? Some labs are less accurate than others on color and clarity.

Trade designation is a mistake, and I actually have no idea how it even got on there (tried removing it as well and that didn't work). I asked her who its graded by as well, and she said DeBeers. No GIA cert, no AGS.

Eta I figured out how to remove trade!

It scored a poor HCA 3.5, dinged on scintillation and spread. The stone is overly deep (faces up smaller than it should for its carat weight) and the angle combo is the cause of that darkness you see. Store lighting is carefully designed as to make just about every diamond sparkle, regardless of good or poor cut.

Ah- that could be part of the color issue then. You might run the numbers through the HCA tool (it's under tools) and see what numbers come up.

ETA- thanks Chrono.

Thank you both!

You're welcome! Does your friend have a return policy on the stone/ring? Would they be open to considering other vendors?

Forevermark does represent some semi-minimalist branding...

http://www.forevermarkdiamond.com/us/discover/forevermark-promise

to include responsible sourcing...which is good. But the details are wanting, (they also warrant beauty, but there's zero content presented about achieving that), and it's hard to see how they're really intending to build the brand.

Thankfully the store has a 30 day return policy, as this will be the second time she's returning a stone (firt time she noticed a visible inclusion when the stone was set). I've tried convincing her to go with BGD as she lives in Houston, but she seems pretty set on the b&m store she went to.

Well, that's too bad because BGD does some fabulous cutting on his stones. I bet they would blow anything she's seen out of the water. Can she at least ask them to bring in some ideal cut stones (GIA or AGS) to look at? It'd be helpful if she had the basic specs she should be looking for on her in terms of angles or if y'all could post the specs here for people to comment on.

Plus some nice settings too. Oh, don't forget the one day only 12% off on 12-12-12 at BGD.

The forevermark people use their own grading but, my observation having seen a few of them is that they seem to be pretty good. Color perception has a lot to do with lighting, the environment and some subtle optics in the stone and it's entirely possible that the darkening she's seeing has more to do with the lights than the stone.

If she doesn't love the stone, take it back just for that reason alone. The specs here aren't all that hard to come by and the store should be able to get her one that really trips her fancy.

Bastetcat, I know! I'm a huge fan of BGD as well, and I've told her this in the past. I sent her the link to the AGA cut guide for round brilliantly, so hopefully she'll make use of that tonight when she goes back. I will definitely pass along any other specs that I get from her from the potential third diamond. Thank you ALL again so much.

Just out of curiosity, she said that she's looking at between 0.90 and 1.0 carats- I think she's willing to sacrifice size for better cut, color and clarity. Any suggested diamonds from BGD's stock so I can give her an idea of what she'd be looking at spending?

Just real quick, from the BGD sale page. Don't know what her budget is so these are just random...I'm sure there's more if you look deep enough. She ought to familiarize herself with the numbers on the certs (crown angle, pavilion angle, table size and depth). You'll see how similar they are on the BGD stones. (I think he cuts those H/A stones to very specific numbers.)

Just spoke to her, she said she's looking to spend between 6 and 8k for the stone and setting (halo). She said she likes BG but loves the guarantee that the store gave her for the life of the ring.

Any suggestions from any other online vendors?

What sort of guarantee is the store providing? Are there any hidden clauses that will nullify the guarantee?

That's the link to the guarantee on the site (easier than writing it all out). Think I may have convinced her to check out some pricescope approved vendors, just need some choices to show her!

Whiteflash is also from Houston and they have a storefront now in Sugarland. This one was on another screen of mine for
some reason. Y'all might run a search through their stones from the ACA stones and expert selection in the parameters she's looking for to
get a general idea.

LOVE those choices. Just sent her the link. Thank you for your searching!
