Frustrated by sapphire search

eastcoaster, i don't have anything new to add other than to say that i hear your pain on trying to find the sapphire of your dreams. it is MUCH harder than trying to locate a diamond. many of us on this forum have searched for months and even years. but keep at it ... you need a lot of hard work and a little luck, too.

The quality of diffused sapphires have improved significantly over the past few years; there are rarely any surface diffused stones anymore. Most diffused sapphires have the colour going all the way through so even if you recut it, the colour is even throughout the stone. You will not see a different colour inside.

I agree with the other posters that:
1. The settings you like are all very expensive and is likely to take the bulk of your budget if you get a high quality setting which you'll want for an engagement ring.
2. It is easier to swap out a new setting than to swap out a new stone, so shop for the stone first.
3. Getting the right sapphire is far more challenging than getting the right diamond. Without luck on your side and the fussier you are, the search could take a year or more.

Blue spinel often shifts in artificial light to a violet or purple, so be aware, and ask the vendor about that.

Other than that, they're very pretty stones, and are affordable alternatives to sapphires of the same color, and spinels are typically untreated.

It will fit in an 8x7 mount, its unheated, and has a decent cut on it. It's lighter than the Kate/Diana ring, but it will darken in a halo.
