funny gem malapropisms?

AND why do people spell it Podporadscha, Padarascha and all such nonsense? Drives me insane.

:errrr: :errrr: :errrr:

I diagnose pad-dyslexic misspelling induced insanity (PDMII).

LD, you must admit, however, that Padparadscha is nearly the most difficult word to spell (next to floury fluorescent which I can only spell properly with a spell checker despite the fact I use it regularly).

The sure-fire cure for PDMII is to stare into the depths of a pink or orange gemstone for at least 15 minutes while breathing deeply.

One of those paradoxical treatments where the cause is also the cure.

Along the same lines as padparadscha, it irks me a little when people market spinels or garnets or some other stone as "padparadscha." I don't even like them that much, but I think the term should only apply to sapphires.

Well, at least I could live with the short version, "pod" vs "pad" :knockout:

I just bought an iPad. I have heard the same about that name.

Pictures of pink and orange stones on the iPad are a suitable substitute. :Up_to_something:

Actually the phonetic term "pod" was common in the gem trade before it evolved into "pad." The color seems to have evolved as well. Shipley's Dictionary of Gems and Gemology, published in the 1950s, describes it as a "light orangy-yellow to orange" variety of sapphire. Terminology and color judgments seem to change with the times.

As you know, Shipley founded the GIA. Out of curiosity I dug out my now-ancient GIA study materials and found "pod" color described as "intense light reddish orange." Schumann defines it as "reddish to orange-yellow." I'm sure there are other definitions depending on the buyer and seller. Variety is the spice of life they say :loopy:
