Called to create a custom ring with a $50k sapphire. They made no attempt to even hear what the design was, repeating that it was impossible unless I had a picture of it. Since it's not something that I have ever seen, I have no picture of it.

"You can't even google it?" No, there is nothing like what I want to design out there.

"It's not that hard, you should just google it. We won't bother without a picture."

Well, gee, if it was out there, then I would just buy it instead of dealing with a self absorbed jerk.

He emphasizes that everything is final sale (ie good luck if they mess up) and refused to make plastic molds to assist with the design process. Hundreds of dollars he says, it'll cost more than the ring. Basic math: $50k / $200 = 250. You would have to mess up a couple hundred times and then some to cost more than the gemstone alone.

Then he hung up. Dick.

Wow. I might recommend David Klass he does all custom jewelry and has a very good reputation.
Alistair Kelsy also does beautiful and drawn and concepted custom work, and while he's in Australia he still would be worth talking to.

Can you tell us more about what you had in mind? Maybe we can help you with better resources?

In a way, a slotted wedding band that fits around the engagement ring like a halo. There's a question of whether which direction to slot the halo.

Thank you for the referrals as well

Yeah. They’re pretty awful. I got a sapphire from them right before I discovered PS and it was the ugliest thing. I’ll attach a photo if I can find one. You could also do a CvB piece with Caysie, her stuff is BEAUTIFUL! Or Victor Canera, or Green Lake Jewelery!
Edit, I returned the sapphire and had to fight with them to even take it back!

Eug, that sucks!!

Btw, you know we're now all curious to see your sapphire - pics? ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your awful service. Yuck. Glad you're here though!

I'd recommend David Klass, Leon Mege or Victor Canera (only works with platinum) for custom settings.

With that kind of budget I'd recommend Leon Mege or Victor Camera. Theres also David Klass. I'm not as wild about his designs but he has plenty of fans. And I know some people say Leon is difficult to work with, i never had a problem.

+1 for Leon Mege. At least you didn't give GemsNY your hard earned money first!

From what I hear, Leon is good to work with if you give him full artistic control, and he only takes cash. I could be wrong. Therefore, if you're a person who needs input on every or many aspects of the design, he may not be your best option.

I reckon you had a narrow escape!

If you want a certain design and want to have any level of input Leon is not the person for you. Caysie, Victor or David Klass will be much better options.

If understand your post, I think you want a halo ring enhancer or wrap. For a solitaire to fit into a wrap that has a halo, they usually require access from below, so the halo is offset and you can add a band to give the look of a double shank on the halo.

Or the, halo will have a gap on the sides where the ring slips in.

Or maybe you mean something like this where you have an existing halo and you want the wedding band to fit beneath?
