Gemstone gets a window after setting

So I just set a recently bought peridot and yesterday I got my ring and there was a huge window ! The gem isn't precision cut but I'm sure that it didn't have a window when I got it. I chose a bezel setting and upon inspecting it closely I realized that the gem wasn't set right, it kinda sinks more in one angle than the others. Still the window on it really doesn't look like a tilt window, its what you would see in these horribly cut stone where the window takes about 80% of the face of the gem.

I'll post a pic of the gem before setting and another pic a ring that's close to what I chose.

Any idea what happened? Could it be just that the stone wasn't set right? or maybe the setting itself? I never had this issue before.

Will post a pic of the ring later on today.

i know too well how anoying a window is in a peridot
but it sounds like a tilt window (still annoying i know)
i also have a lovelly blue topaz with a very annoying window

After playing around with a scap of kitchen foil i intend to have a jewler put silver foil under the stone
not sure now this effects cleaning but i cant enjoy my topaz as it is

hopefully others will be taking shorty to better explain

don't dispare just yet

I too suspect it is a tilt window.

DK :))

Stone looks fine. I suspect a tilt window.

This is the ring 20211027_150002.jpg20211027_145925.jpg

I thought if it's a tilt window it would disappear when I move at different angles, but it doesn't.

I'll take it back today and see what the jeweler has to say

I could be wrong, however, the stone in the finished ring does not resemble the Peridot in the first/original post to me!

DK :confused2:

Is this picture of the loose stone your hand?
If not - do you have any?

I agree…That doesn’t look like the same stone..

While the stone looks very different when set I feel like I do see the same faceting outlines of the table and adjacent facets in the loose and set stones pictures.

Is that stone sitting correctly in the bezel, or is it tilted somehow?

I would never bezel a peridot, as they’re not hard enough to withstand bezel setting by many jewelers.

Yeah - or they chipped and recut it?

Bingo

Just came back from the store. The owner wasn't there but the jeweler who worked on the ring was. I explained the issue to him but he insisted that the window was normal. He called the owner and after some give and take, I insisted he takes the stone out of the ring. Got the stone and something was wrong just by looking at it, it was my stone but something was off. Told him to take the dimensions... Length and width were spot on but depth lost 1.5 mm.

I told the owner, and after talking to his jeweler he confirmed that it was chipped.

He paid me back for everything. But I really liked that peridot, it had that beautiful vivid green.

Thanks everyone for helping out.

Wow. It is completely dishonest to not only chip the stone without telling you, but then to recut and reset the stone without your permission. I'm certainly glad you got your money back, but the jeweler should have made the offer before setting the stone, and not tried to trick you into accepting something less than what you expected. If it were me, I would leave a bad review because this jeweler only made you whole because he got caught.

Such a bummer! I’m stunned (well, maybe not that much) that they would try to just let this pass without telling you. I’d definitely change jewelers. Glad you got paid for it.

In future, please do not bezel a gem unless the jeweler knows how to properly bezel. Sorry about your ordeal.

Actually it might also be that there were other customers in the store.

But yes it was quite unprofessional of them, still I would give the owner the benefit of the doubt, he might actually not have known about it.

This is extremely shady of the jeweler. I’m glad you were able to make them admit to chipping the stone and making you whole. What is your budget? Maybe we can help you hunt for a peridot in the same green that you love.

Wait - was the jeweler you were talking to today the same jeweler who chipped the stone? If yes then he outright lied to you at first. I would be furious and if I were the owner I’d be hard-pressed to continue using/employing that jeweler.

I'm not gonna bezel a gem again :lol-2: it really was a gem that I liked, still stuff like this happen.

Also it was a great learning experience!

Oh that's very nice of you, I got it for a good price , I think it was around 50 per carat, I'm going to contact the same guy and see if has any others on hand.

It was a instagram account.

Yes, he did it with a smile (literally) , but I was in a good mood today.

So the jeweller you talked to first told you everything was just dandy, and only after you forced the issue of removing the stone and his employer got on his case did he admit he’d chipped it and recut it?

I have no words for how dishonest this is :eek-2:

Yes very much.

Guess he was hopeful that I wouldn't catch on to what he did and the issue would just pass.

Did they refund you for the peridot?

I suspect they switched your peridot with another one they had. Table is different, crown is different, pavilion is different. I doubt it chipped all 360 degrees requiring a full recut.

And why on earth would a jeweler that's not liable for chipping during setting choose to make himself liable recutting a stone without your permission? A chip is not with intent but a recut definitely are... Makes no sense.
