Gemstone gets a window after setting

Happy your got your money back @q8peridot but this is one of the more whacky, ‘are you kidding me?’ things I’ve seen on PS. How in the world did the jeweler expect to get away with this?!?

if you’re gonna switch stones, at least get a similar looking one

You can put a colored stone in a bezel, just aim for harder ones such as sapphires or spinels.

I've had Daniel M bezel peridots and tourmalines before with no chipping. I agree with an earlier poster that if the jeweler is that unethical, it's more likely they swapped your precision cut gem for a cheap one booking that you wouldn't notice. I've had a handful of projects where the stone chipped, and none of them required a full recut that reduced the depth. Usually when you bezel the chip occurs near the girdle, so a recut to fix a chipped gem should be at the table and the girdle, not the pavilion where most of the weight is. I would be willing to bet that they were impressed by the precision cut gem and sold it to someone else for much more. I think they're dishonest and would personally cease to do any business with them for fear they'd swap out more of my stovets with duds.

Guess he was hopeful that I wouldn't catch on to what he did and the issue would just pass.

Unethical, no matter the reason(s) for their actions, they should have come clean right away, IMHO.

DK :x2

Am I the only one here that thinks this jeweler just kept the stone...and plopped in some green thing..[the new crappy green stone sure doesn't look like a "recut" to me..

Yep. Not buying the recut story.
That story can be twisted to a ‘I thought I was doing you a favor/the right thing, it’s a misunderstanding’ route.

Agreed that it's weird that they would recut the stone in a way that would reduce the depth if its a bezel, without reducing the width and length. My first reaction to that was they probably swapped it out.

I am a trouble maker and would ask them to describe exactly where they chipped it and how they recut it. If they say they only recut the pavilion you can point out the crown pattern is totally different.

Edit: also please roast them on yelp.

As I said before, I believe the stone has been switched.

DK :))

So gross. I agree with the above posters. It's a crime to take the stone, even if you've been reimbursed. I have a lot of ideas of what I would do, but the negative Yelp review - with pictures - would be first on my list. Take it from there.

I’ve had this happen to me, owner lied about it and only when I was able to show photos & measurements of my tsavorite did she finally relent and admit the bench chipped the stone and replaced it with an inferior one. :angryfire: I made them recut my chipped one and refund me everything.

As above, I also don’t think you got the same stone back!!!!

At the very least, please write a review about the dishonesty so that other customers are warned. I would want to know.

I don't have a lot of experience having stones set (yet) but do jewelers sometimes say that they will not be responsible if the stone gets chipped (because it can happen) if they did not sell the stone? In which case the customer assumes all risk and the jeweler wouldn't be on the hook.

Yes, the jeweler will say that they are not liable if the stone gets chipped. However, if the stone gets chipped, they should admit it and return the same chipped stone to me, not replace it with an inferior one!

Wow, what a terrible situation---I'm shocked by the appalling dishonesty of that jeweler! I wonder how many other customers have been ripped off because he is so unethical. Good for you for standing up for yourself & making them show you the dimensions. I'm sorry you lost your lovely stone.

This. Completely dishonest either way though. No words... At least you got your money back.

File a complaint with the BBB and make them pay for the beautiful stone they ruined or stole. And leave clear, explanatory reviews on all the local websites so everyone will know about their dishonesty.

Yes, of course!

What is REALLY sad here-is how many people go in there with REAL diamonds and walk out with cz's or moissanites and never know it.

OP feel free to leave them a 1 star yelp review and put a reference link to THIS thread. You don't have to tell us WHO they are, but the rest of the world looking for a good jeweler should know. Consumer beware IMHO.

I agree with what others have said so I won't go on how unethical that jeweler is. That said, I would love to see a picture of the stone after they took it out of the setting just for comparison of the first picture you posted of it before it was set.
