,54 ct, i2, Gia certified as "fancy pink-purple" natural diamond. How rare are they? I can't find too many on the Internet or even on pricescope. It is pretty and a natural un-modified purple with the naked eye and with a loupe, but has a bit of extinction in the middle. But still a very pretty stone. opinions? Thank you

Unless the price was say like $50 USD I would pass. The I2 is a killer, along with your description of an extinct middle... I'd totally pass

How rare is a difficult question to answer in a quantitative way.
There is no number grade associated with rarity, but we can look at rarity of individual properties.

Purple Pink IS a more rare hue than brown or yellow, but less rare than some other hues.
Over a half carat is more rare than smaller ones but less rare than larger ones.
I may be wrong but I suspect Pink Purple IS more rare than Purple Pink which is more rare than Purplish Pink.
The only reason I suspect this is because I've had my eye out for a diamond that is as purple as possible and see few FCDs where Purple is mentioned last.
The last-mentioned hue is the dominant one.
Purple is usually a secondary modifier to pink.
I2 is less rare than higher clarities but more rare than I3.

I'm not sure any of what I've written helps.
What matters is how it looks and the price.
It is very hard to determine what is a 'fair' price for FCDs since their rarity gives us so few comps, and how desirable they look can vary a great deal even with identical GIA grades.
I2 pretty much guarantees it is not eye-clean and there may be mechanical issues that make the diamond less durable, but it does get you a larger stone for the money if you don't mind visible inclusions and setting it in a full bezel for protection.

So are you considering buying this stone?
Can you post pics?
What shape is it?
Is it listed on the Internet?
Is this for another project or will you be setting it with your other pink?

Hi, Kenny,

I was hoping you'd weigh in!! Thank you for your comments.

I went to see the stone again today. I was wrong on some of my info. It is I1, not I2. I have attached 4 pictures, but I couldn't get good macros. The stone is light purple, clear. What I thought was extinction is actually an overly-big facet on one side, which causes a small window in the stone, but the jeweler says that with a closed setting it would be not very noticible. I saw the copy fo the GIA grading report, and will be getting the actual copy as well as a Japanese diamond grading showing the clarity of the stone on it. My plans are to set it in the ring in the last picture, I'll take the ruby out and replace it with this diamond. I think it will look good in the setting.

I think a .546 ct purple diamond is a real rarity, and it's a great deal, so I think I'll get it. The dealer is completely trustworthy, so I feel confident. But your thoughts, since you are the FCD expert, are valued. With the naked eye, the stone is very pretty. With a loupe, you can see some inclusions, but that is pretty normal for most FCDs that are not sky-high priced, right? And to get a purple diamond over half a carat is pretty lucky, I think.

Thank you and I'll be awaiting your reply!

It is very light and cute. As with everything else, rarity is relative.

Hi, Chrono,

Yes, I know it's light, but it's a great deal, so I think I'll get it, don't think I'll ever get another chance like this.
Thanks!

A "great deal" is also subjective. :cheeky: One person's great deal might be expensive to another. It is a sweet FCD though, so if not expensive, I'd probably get it too.

Yes, you're right - but I think it is an incredibly good deal because it comes with the ring and ruby in the last picture. My jeweler rocks. ( no pun intended  )

You do know that that ruby doesn't have good colour at all...

Not at that angle.....and it's a freebie, so no problem. :)

I don't mean this to be mean: But I have never seen a natural fancy diamond report from GIA on paper like that.

Yes, it's a xerox, I will get the original soon. Thanks

I really love the color. And it lookes like it actually has pretty good clarity.

I don't know much about FCDs, but the saturation looks pretty weak, perhaps because of the window - is the hope that color intensity would be bumped up in the setting?

Thank you! It's light, but pretty, and it does have pretty good clarity.

Yes, I hope so too, but it does have a nice lavender tint. I'll cross my fingers. I'm willing to gamble on it though.

With a depth of 61% I'm surprised it is windowing.

It's beautiful and if you like it at their price buy it.
How many people have a natural purple diamond over half a carat?

Sure, the color is not intense or vivid, but if it was the price would be MUCH higher.
IMHO, there is nothing wrong or inferior about FCDs with softer color.
They certainly have their own charm and I could understand if someone with zillions of bucks preferred lower saturation FCDs.

GIA did not grade the clarity so you are taking the jeweler's word.
You sound happy with its appearance.
Depending on your trust factor you may consider paying to have it examined by an INDEPENDENT professional gemologist of your choosing to make sure there are no feathers reaching the surface or other things that may be durability issues.

Hi Kenny,

Thank you so much for your input. I value it highly. My jeweler is going to have the diamond set in the pictured setting for me (it's included in the price), so if anything happens in the process, then the risk will be his. I do trust him, so I will ask him about the feathering and durability again today. It's difficult for me to have an independent grading done it here in Japan, but in the future I will probably do that. But as I mentioned above, in addition to the GIA grading, it will come with one from a Japanese diamond grading laboratory, and I'm sure it's on the up and up and completely independent of him. As I said, he's a long standing and reputable dealer, so I'm sure he would answer any questions truthfully. And if anything were to happen to the ring, I think he would stand behind it. Seeing the few purple FCD's on the Internet that I did, and the prices for them, then this one being in my price range is a steal, so I think I'll get it.

I will post pictures of the finished ring after I get it. I think with the faint lavender color, the diamond might not pop huge, but he says the closed setting will help it. We'll see!
:wavey: Thanks!

Well it sounds like a done deal.
Congratulations.
It's beautiful.

May you enjoy it in good health for many many years.

Thank you! I'll post pictures when I get the finished product. :))
