GIA Inconclusive country of origin

The sapphire was replaced in the ring in 2001. I don't think diffusion was all the way through the stones yet but just the surface. I still think immersion might have given me a clue. The pic. in the article from GIA shows a sapphire immersed with just the surface diffusion. Have a nice day and a Merry Christmas.

I am totally confused now. I thought you already knew the sapphire is diffused from the GIA lab report. If so, why are you trying to do the immersion test yourself? Do you know how to do it correctly if you cannot even identify a heated stone from an unheated stone?

Perhaps he thinks if its only surface level, then there is value to what is underneath? Other than that scenario, which seems bizarrely unlikely, I can't imagine why it matters whether its surface diffusion or diffusion - its still diffusion. And if GIA called it Be treated or lattice diffused with a foreign substance you know it goes all the way through...

So if it's surface diffused, give it a good scratch or polish and voila! All will be revealed - no need for immersion! If it's surface diffused then it's basically of very little value so scratching it won't make a difference.

In 2001 BE diffusion was most definitely around. The burners were doing it for quite some time before people cottoned on and it was then noted in labs. So a timeline of 2001 doesn't prove which treatment may have been applied.

I'm really sorry but I agree with Chrono, if you have had trouble even telling if it was heated or not, the chances of you being able to accurate conduct tests that should only be done by experts and/or labs is not likely to be conclusive.
