My husband''s step sister (my step sister in law?!?!) just had a baby girl in February. She had a shower in November and I gave her an adorable outfit. Then after the baby was born, we sent another little outfit--yes, I''m a sucker for little girls clothing!! Now we are going to the christening in a few weeks and I''m not sure about the gift protocol. Do we give money, jewelry, more clothing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

At my nephews christening he got a little bit of everything....lots of clothes, some toys...and some jewelry too!... (a little cross and a beautiful pin)...

He also got a really nice silver frame...which my sister was kind of impressed and thought it was an unusual gift, but she loved it!

My sister''s favorite were these two books...called "about Grandma" and "about Grandpa"...both Grandma and Grandpa have to get their book and write down the answers to the questions...it was the cutest thing!. The book was huge and it went from what toys, games, outfits the grandpas used to wear when they were little...to what they did in school, their favorite foods, classes, etc. It was pretty much a recap of the grandparents'' lives....chilhood, teenage years, college, how they met each other, how their wedding was, the grandma''s pregnancy, things she remembered about her kids (the baby''s mom/dad), etc...

It was really nice!. I don''t think there is something specific you have to give....I would try doing something different than an outfit though.

Good luck!

One of my little sister''s favorite things is a stepping stool that has her name in large block letters. The stool is wooden and the letters are about 6 inches high, at first it was great for her to play with (you know colors, letters to learn) now she uses it to brush her teeth or get down books from the higher shelves in her closet.
If you want to go the opposite route and do something more for the parents, what about a week or a month of cleaning service for the parents?

I love the stool idea Matatora!!!!!

My BF got his goddaughter a necklace, a chain with a little crucifix with a tiny diamond set into it, for her christening. Since she is only 2 now, it is put aside so that she can wear it later.

A religious item like a rosary might be nice, as she can learn to use it as she grows older. I love the previous stool idea as well.

I have given gold cross pendants and baby bracelets (more like a bangle). I get them engraved with the date of the christening, it''s a nice touch.

For my youngest cousin, the last to be christened...I guess until I have a kid

We gave her this sterling silver little box thats called a toothfairy box, I think? Its either for the children to put their teeth in when they lose them and the toothfairy collects them from it or sort of where the parents keep the teeth their kids lose...and a nice check too, of course! I''ve seen them in a whole range of prices and levels of decoration.

I am a whopping 4''11", which means that, at 27, I still use my stool with my name on it! It is useful and personal. Plus, I always LOVED anything that had my name on it, so you could get an early start on that for the infant. Between all of my sacraments, I have more crosses, rosaries and scapulars than I can count. The unique gifts are what stand out.
