Hi,

I've started the engagement ring hunt and a family friend put me in touch with a wholesaler who has offered the following ? Is it really a good deal?

1 ct, G colour, Very Good cut, vs1 set in a pave band (same as the Tiffany Grace style) for $5000 all in. I live in Ontario, Canada.

They also said I could have it independently certified before purchasing, which I would do. Trust but verify is my motto.

Please post the table, depth, crown and pavilion angles.

Does it have a GIA grading report? If not, pass. These "wholesaler" deals are almost never good for the buyer. True wholesalers don't sell to friends of friends. You're dealing with a shady situation at the outset.

Yes, we need the diamond's numbers before we comment on its pricing. But you'll find that not many (no one?) here recommends buying a 'very good' cut diamond. In real terms, very good means 'totally average.' If you want the most beautiful diamond for your money, GIA excellent or AGS ideal are the only recommendations you'll receive.

And the person you are dealing with is not a wholesaler. Despite whatever you've been told, wholesalers do not conduct business with members of the general public.

"Family friends" and big ticket jewelry purchases end badly 99.999999% of the time. Please post your budget and let us find you an accurately graded, top cut stunner instead.

probably NOT :!: .. if the stone does not come with a GIA or AGS lab report.

Thanks for your replies...

I am going back this Friday to have the diamond certified, I won't put down any money until I can view the certification results.

As such, I currently don't have all the info required.

I am looking for (and hope the aforementioned "wholesaler" passes certification as requested below);

Princess Cut
1.0 ct
H or better
VS1 or better
Cut: Very Good or better
Diamon Budget: $4000

with a setting that looks like the "Tiffany Grace": $5000 total ($4k diamond + $1k setting).

What would be a "good" table, depth, crown and pavilion angles to look for?

:)
