The angles are slightly too steep to be safe, depends on the averaging and rounding by GIA. Request for an Idealscope image from the vendor is the next step, not sure if this vendor can provide it.

Hi I am new to this board and I was hoping I could get some advice from a diamond expert please. I know about the 4 c's but I am not sure when it comes to depth, table, fluorescence etc...

Can you tell me whether this would be a good diamond for my engagement ring please?

Thanks in advance

Hi Claire and welcome!

Stonecold is right, the angles of this stone are what we refer to as ' steep deep,' this basically means this could indicate light leakage and an Idealscope image is needed to properly evaluate the stone. Light leakage is undesirable as this means light is leaking out of the stone rather like a leaky bucket with water, this can result in a dull stone which can show a dark ring around the table and or dark patches. Really an Idealscope image is the best way to check for this. Do you have any other diamonds in mind if you can't get images for this one? A stone with ' safer' angles might be better if you are buying sight unseen.

The tutorial Stone linked for you from our knowledge section will be useful to you, check out the various topics on the left to learn more about depth, table and so on, also if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

thanks so much for that link! It was so informative!

Thanks so much for your advice. I had a look at the link but I wonder if you could give me the ideal percentages that I would need to look for. I find all this information a little overwhelming!! I am happy with the colour and clarity and would look for a certificate that says the cut is excellent but the rest of it is all a bit confusing. What percentages to I need to look for in the depth and table and any other information that will help me get my perfect diamond. I really want a sparkler

Use the Hollloway Cut Adviser? https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

Any stone scoring between 0-2 is a candidate for further investigation, like asking for images, Idealscope image, calling it in to view it personally, etc. Most people choose using that score and within GIA Ex/AGS Ideal boundary to be safer.

Hi Claire

You can use this chart as a guide to help you find a well cut diamond, bear in mind to use it as a guide as various proportion configurations can sometimes work well together, you can use the Holloway Cut Advisor to help along with images where possible as above.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).
