I wanted to write a review for Good Old Gold following my first time purchase of a diamond from an online vendor. I will get right to the conclusion. In sum, my experience with Good Old Gold and their staff was nothing short of superb!
This is really geared toward guys like me who are looking at making that first plunge into purchasing a diamond for an engagement. Like most, I started with the local stores and big name retailers to see what was out there. I quickly turned to the internet to see if there were better deals to be had. I soon discovered that the internet was enticing. I was certainly finding larger diamonds, better clarity, and better color gradings from what I could find locally. It made sense. The local brick and motar shops and retail mall shops have monthly overheads, and that seem to be reflected in the price of their loose diamond selection, which was usually minimal.
The problem was pulling the trigger on an online vendor. After all, I had the nagging adage in the back of my head: "if it's too good to be true, it probably is!" I spent a fair amount of time researching customer reviews of various online vendors. I spent countless hours searching "X retailer reputation" etc.
Luckily, I stumbled upon this site and eventually upon Good Old Gold! Jonathan's educational and comparison videos quickly led me to realize something that I had truly overlooked: diamond performance, or in other words, cut quality.
I was interested in a princess cut diamond and almost made the mistake of purchasing a princess cut that looked good in a picture (and certainly in price). Thankfully, I learned that a picture and GIA report are only part of the picture. Getting that extra bit of carat weight and a better color grade mean nothing if the diamond won't perform because the cut is typical. Before stumbling upon Good Old Gold, I was convinced I needed an F/G clarity. Seeing, however, is believing. An excellent cut diamond is a "white" diamond even though it may have an h/i color grading.
I ended up purchasing an H color Solasfera that not only looks as white as I could have imagined, but it dazzles like all get out!
Most importantly, the staff was patient and really worked with me to pick the best option. I wasn't pressured and I wasn't "encouraged" toward a more expensive diamond (something that I commonly got working with other retailers). In fact, I was actually looking at a more expensive diamond within my price range and I was steered toward another that Jonathan's staff truly felt would be a better fit and perform better with the setting I had selected. That set the benchmark for honesty and integrity in a vendor as far as I'm concerned.
Good Old Gold brings the best of a brick and motar shop and an online vendor together. The comparison video they prepared for me left me feeling at ease with my purchase, and by comparison with other prices online for similar diamonds of like cut quality, I felt absolutely confident I received tremendous deal. At the end of the day, that is the best that one can ask because there are no "steal-of-a-deals" to be had in my opinion. Quality diamonds that perform come with a price--Good Old Gold supplies them at good, honest price points.
To conclude, I am one happy customer and I know the love of my life will light up like the diamond I selected. So, to those like myself looking to take that first time plunge and are considering an online vendor for your diamond purchase, I would wholeheartedly recommend Good Old Gold.
