Has anyone had a custom ring made by this company? What are your thoughts? After reading a forum on buying in the Diamond District in New York, I have been convinced that it''s not a great idea.

My boyfriend and I have not been happy with what we have seen at the Diamond District and unfortunately, have only really loved a ring from DeBeers. My boyfriend is set on buying from DeBeers, but I''m shopping around.

I have heard good things about this company on this site. Does anyone have any experience with them?

And here is the ring.

I have only found it at DeBeers. I''m a bit reluctant to buy from DeBeers though because I fear we can get the same quality diamond for less from a reputable dealer. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is not comfortable with any of the dealers we have met at the Diamond District. The only reason I would go with DeBeers is that their rings are made very delicately and the bands and settings are not thick or "clunky", for lack of a better word.

GOG has an excellent rep here and have provided many rings, custom and otherwise to many very happy PSers. You wouldn't go wrong with Jon and his team IMO. I haven't had any personal experience with them, but have heard from many who have who will chime in I am sure. Ok maybe they don't do custom and have another way of doing it, I was thinking of a particular ring here, check out mrssalvo's recommendations too.

As far as I know GOG doesn''t do any in house custom. They carry a lot of settings though and I would think a trip out there would be worth your while. Just make sure to set up an appt. first.

also,

try Mark T at engagement rings direct He''s located right in the diamond district. Same goes for him, an appt. is very helpful to both you and him.

mrrsalvo is right...they don''t do custom work. they can get many settings though, as can mark.

Actually, Good Old Gold does custom work if you are local. My ring, and my friend''s ring were both custom made there. We both love our rings & as far I know, there weren''t any kinks in the process (our fiance''s did their shopping without us).

My ring is extremely dainty - I don''t believe the band is much more than 2 mm. You can click on my name & view my topics - you''ll find my ring if you are interested.

My fiance was very happy with his experience at Good Old Gold & I may be biased, but I think my ring is beautiful!

Good luck on your search

And the thread is here

I believe that they do custom work from afar as well.

When I was considering setting options for the Jubilee I purchased from GOG, they give me a bid to create a fairly detailed micropave three stone ring. I ended up going with a mass-manufactured setting (which in retrospect, I wish I hadn''t), but the GOG bid was in line with the one I got from Quest, and I trust that the team would''ve done a great job. I had an awesome experience with them.

Hope that helps!

GOG is now doing custom settings for local clients and on a case by case basis for remote clients.

Thanks for the kind words Danielle and Kathy and for the clarifications.

In the past we used to avoid custom jobs via the net because we always felt it better to have folks see the job during the process and we would only do so, if we felt fully confident with the results and also the ability of the designer making the ring. If there were any doubts we felt more comfortable referring the job elsewhere. Hence we have always recommended folks like Mark Morrell to our net clients who is an outstanding designer and custom maker of rings. We''ve never mentioned this on the forum but last year we have found an amazing designer who now works with us regularly, is local and whose craftsmanship is comparable with the finest designers we have witnessed, even down to intricate details.

My assistant Marie works and talks with him daily so if you forward her a picture, she can quickly get you a quote. The work I''ve seen from this designer so far has been nothing short of immaculate. We try to be careful about custom jobs because we know how particular folks can be and we''ll only take it on if we are fully confident it can be made to the clients satisfaction. Also it''s not easy getting by the QA of Christen and Marie. They are great at finding mistakes.

We hope to be of help.

Kind regards,

We just bought our rock from GOG and they are FABULOUS, it is currently in the capable hands of Mark Morrell being set, I would have NO HESITATION recommending GOG they get the best and the prices are awesome too.
