First of all, hello everyone! I discovered this forum a few weeks ago, and I'm addicted! I've been reading every thread and admiring the beautiful pieces posted by their lucky owners. Jewelry, especially colored gemstones, has fascinated me for as long as I can remember, and I'm finally at the point in my life where I can consider buying some sparklies for myself, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I go shopping.

Here's a ring from Gordon Clark that I'm interested in:
Gordon Clark GC3642

I contacted Gordon Clark (through Bill Barnes), and was quoted $928 (platinum), $372 (18k white gold), and $279 (14k white gold).

Some advice please:
  1. Does anyone here own any Gordon Clark designs? I'm looking for feedback on their workmanship.
  2. I think the setting would look lovely with an emerald-cut or princess-cut blue sapphire. Gordon Clark only offers amethyst, blue topaz, citrine or garnet for this particular style, so I'm considering getting the setting without the stone, which is $48 less than the prices above, and mount it with a sapphire later. If I were to go that route, how much more money would I need to budget, for the sapphire, for mounting work, and anything else I haven't thought of? As a point of reference, the amethyst on the Gordon Clark ring is 5x7 mm.
I'd appreciate any suggestions/feedback!
Ally

Thanks for your reply! I checked out ajsgems.com, and they do have some delicious blue sapphires.

There aren't that many loose princess-cut blue sapphires out there, it seems. I have a feeling it's going to be tough to find one that'll match the width of the band exactly, which is what I would prefer. Guess I'll have to keep searching!

Why not try a different cut?

I like step cuts.

I agree, step cut would be another terrific choice. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

My bigger concern right now is that I still haven't been able to find feedback about Gordon Clark. There are posts about their beautiful designs, but no mention of anyone owning a piece from them or how well the pieces are made. Since the setting is not returnable, I'm hesitating.

In the meantime, just for fun, I thought I'd practice attaching an image to my post. If it works, you'll see the photo of the Lady Mountbatten Tiara.

Thanks Ana! That sapphire has a very pretty purple hue, but I'm hoping for a stone that's more blue than purple. I've bookmarked the site for future reference though!

Thanks icelady! Isn't that tiara amazing? Until I can afford one of those real beauties, I have to settle for impulse purchases of rhinestone and crystal tiaras from eBay :-). I have about five in my puny collection; they serve absolutely no purpose except to cheer me up -- life's problems seem more solveable with a tiara on my head. LOL

I think this one looks promising. What does everyone think? Image and description from the AJS Gems Web site:
