Hi all,

I listed my engagement ring on I Do Now I Don't a couple of weeks ago and thought that I should post the link here. I checked out Diamond Bistro which seems to be popular here, but the site was not working for me. As I'm new to selling anything online, I want to be as safe as possible. The downside to IDNID is that I have to pay a high fee, but I am a motivated seller. It's interesting that I went from a lurker, drooling over everyone's diamonds here on Pricescope to owning my own beautiful ring. Of course, marriage is not all about the ring; that rock couldn't make things work. My marriage ended a few years ago and now it's time to sell! All offers will be considered. Thanks.

Here are details:

One three-stone engagement ring consisting of three square modified brilliant diamonds set in 14kt white gold. Total diamond weight is approx. 2.75 ctw. Ring Size: 6.25.

Side Stone 1: .73 ct, SI2, H color
Center Stone: 1.19 ct, I1, H color
Side Stone 2: .83 ct, SI1, H color

hummingbird, DB seems to be working again, so give it another go - there aren't any fees for listings either.

Who are the certifications from?

Unfortunately, I don't have any of the original paperwork that came with the ring. My ex has/had it, and since I haven't spoken to him in years, there is no chance that I will get my hands on it. I was able to give the specs of the ring because I had a GIA appraisal done in my city last month. I realize that that is not the same as a certification. I looked on the GIA website and it seems that they only accept loose diamonds. Is there another way to get a certification, if needed?

to be honest...your $13K asking price is way out of the ball park... ::)

i appreciate your honesty. that was my fear. i will have to re-evaluate and revise the pricing.

You best bet is to get a good appraisal of the specs for the diamonds, look up retail comps using the PS search engine, then subtract about 50% or more for the diamonds being second hand and also for them not having lab reports. An appraiser can also help you set value, but they would need to know up fron this is what you are planning.

Supply & demand is a big factor here too. The secondary market is full of pre-worn e-rings, unfortunately. Have you considered re-purposing the stones into a pendant & set of earrings, or something like that?

Thanks for the replies, Dreamer_D and VAgemguy. I'm going to take the suggestion of doing comps and estimating a 50% subtraction. I have considered re-purposing the ring, but I decided against that.

It's a beautiful ring! Have you considered consignment?

Thanks Laila! :) I just spent a few minutes searching the boards here, as I had not considered consignment before your post. I'm not sure that I live in an area where it would sell in a decent amount of time. Do you (or others) have any recommendations for online possibilities?

Hmm...I did the comps and I am feeling quite embarrassed. It seems that my asking price should be around $5-6K. Ouch! Experts, does that sound about right for selling via DB or Ebay?

Not sure what you mean by this, since GIA doesn't do appraisals. :|

I only meant that the appraiser is described as a "GIA graduate gemologist." Nothing more; nothing less.

Yes, contact Jonathan at Good Old Gold. He is so nice and he knows his stuff.

If your stones were certed, I would have recommended around $6k, since the comps I saw were around $9k total. But, they're not. It's a leap of faith for a buyer, and buying an I1 without an inclusion plot is going to be scary. You're definitely going to need lots of awesome macro photos.

Thanks again everyone for your input. Laila619, I just sent Jon at Good Old Gold an email. I appreciate the referral.

I have suspended the ad on DB, as Jon at GOG will be taking a look at the ring. Updates soon.
