Hello Pricescopers,

I just wanted to say thank you for all the great knowledge you have poured into this site. Through much research, and reading, I learned quite a bit about diamonds. I feel if I had not come here, I would have ended up with some piece of junk stone and probably paid far too much for it.

In the end I decided to support a local custom jeweler. They brought out 20 diamonds or so that fit my criteria and in the end I went with this 1.37 H VS2 Round Brilliant. It is set in a temporary 4 prong solitaire setting that will be replaced once my girlfriend says yes. She had mentioned in passing that she doesn't care for settings that leave the ring sitting way high off your finger. So we will go in to the jeweler and have them custom make us something that she will like.

The stone is GIA triple excellent, but it falls a bit into the steep/deep category. I was fine with that considering how well the stone performs, and the price was very competitive for its size/color/clarity.

So on with the photos, right?

Okay.

Timeless and beautiful!

Nice. I like the setting as is.

Wow! Well done! That''s a beautiful stone! Best of luck with the proposal, whenever that will be! We''ll expect to see plenty of photos once the stone has it''s "forever home"...both of the ring, and hand shots on your FI!

Beautiful!!

Thanks everyone. Yeah the proposal will probably be in a couple weeks. I still need to get down to her parents place and talk with her father (I'm kinda traditional like that) and then it will probably happen sometime in that next week. I'm still trying to figure out the details of it all, but I'm not the type to make a big hoopla about it. She is not that type either, but I don't want to just be sitting there watching TV and ask her, ya know. I will do something interesting.

And as for the photos, I'm not sure if she will be able to hold still for 10 seconds waiting the shutter to close. I suppose I could try some daylight ones... I think tonight I will try to get a good arrows shot. I struggled a bit with that last night. I have a couple ideas, but I'm not sure how they will really pan out. Stay tuned.

What a beautiful ring! Congrats!

The stone cut is brilliant!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I'm glad you like the shots. The stone really does perform quite well. I was a bit hesitant because it didn't get a perfect score on the Cut Advisor, but it really is quite beautiful in person. I think my lady will love it.

What I'm really excited about is making the custom setting. I'm an Architect, so designing is a lot of fun for me. The jeweler even said, "Why don't you design something and we can make it for you?" That's a lot of responsibility, but I think it would be a lot of fun. We will see what my g/f says about it all.

Edit: I tried getting a good arrows shot, but I was struggling with getting the light set up just right. They are there, but I couldn't get the flashes set up in the right position to show the contrast properly. Oh well. Maybe I will try again at a later date, but for now I have other things I need to get ready, like figuring out how I'm going to present this thing to her...

Pretty.

Tommy D,

WOW! You did an phenomenal job choosing the stone! It is just gorgeous.

Thanks for sharing!

And you know, there is a lot that can be said for maintaining a relationship with a good jeweler nearby and buying locally. Great job!

It''s absolutely gorgeous! I think you did very good. My stone is also a GIA triple ex that is borderline steep deep, but honestly, I think there are a lot of very beautiful stones out there with these specs that are not given a fair chance. I did not learn of these "steep deeps" until way after we had made our purchase. But honestly, even if I had, I would have kept my stone because it is incredibly fiery and brilliant. Beautiful stone, and congrats!

That is STUNNING

Incredible ring! This is the first round brilliant that has really caught my eye - that is saying a LOT! :)

hey tommy_d,
after much research and negotiation, i too have found a stone that should be suitable. at a fair price. It is a 1.53 I VS2 (3 ex) with an HCA score of 2.2 for $9400. I was wondering what your stone was rated at (HCA) and what it cost you. I am only asking because I too want to ensure that I am getting a fair deal. Thanks for the input.
