Hello all! Today was our first day of engagement ring shopping and I thought it would be a good idea to window shop at the diamond district since I have no idea what I want. I literally know nothing about rings...except that I have pictures of a Maytal Hannah and a Graff ring saved in my phone for reference. We went into a store called Majestic Diamonds and to make a 3 hour story short… the salesman brought out a Graff ring setting that he said a woman wanted to “get rid of for quick money.” I was literally in shock. He brought out the setting I had saved in my phone for the past few months! He told us that he bought the Graff ring for its diamond which he removed from the original “Graff” setting (rose gold with pink diamonds) and took the Graff diamond and made a different 4 karat white gold engagement ring worth $95,000.
I was obsessed with the Graff ring before we even went to LOOK in the diamond district today so when I saw the setting , I was not leaving with my fiancé putting a $300 deposit on the "Graff" setting. I know this sounds confusing and this all happened an hour ago so I myself am confused. We put a $300 deposit on what we think is a Graff setting. The Graff setting will be sold to us for $3,300 in a few weeks. My question is…Does anyone know where the signature of Graff is on their rings? The signature of the setting that I put a deposit on is in print on the outside of the base of the ring…it sort of looks like this: G R A F F
Next question... where I can find an appraiser that can go with me to this Majestic Diamonds to make sure this is in fact a real Graff setting and that the pink diamonds are real and worth at least $3,300.
I am not sure if this was a stroke of luck or if we got duped out of $300 like my fiancé thinks. I got yelled at the whole way home because I was in tears at the store thinking of someone else buying this Graff setting. The salesman kept saying that he could sell the setting in an hour if he wanted…I didn’t know what to do so I panicked! Our budget is about $25,000 so I know that I can't afford a Graff ring. Help! This was supposed to be our first day of looking…and I made my fiancé put money down on a setting that might be a fake…
Also, how much is an actual Graff setting worth? The salesman said that if he were to make the same setting for me that would cost close to $10,000 and obviously won't be a Graff. This sounds too good to be true... my head hurts.

If you get the setting, will you be able to get a diamond of the right size to put in it? If the diamond originally in it made a 95k ring, I imagine it was a pretty big diamond...

I just can't see any (reputable) jeweller taking a stone out of a setting like that. The value of a signed piece is in keeping it whole, not taking it apart. If a jeweller wanted to make a 95k setting for a diamond why on earth would he/she choose to devalue a piece with an extremely prestigious name like Graff in the process?

Re: GRAFF experts! Did I stumbled upon a real Graff setting?

You both make good points! The jeweler said that he could make the setting fit any type of stone I wanted regardless of shape or size...I really like an oval.
I agree with the second post...why would he disassemble a ring if it was so valuable. At the end of the day (if it is a fake) we only lost $300. So it's not the end of the world... But I still have no idea if the ring on hold is a real or a fake! So frustrating.

How? Significant changes/re-working to change the aesthetic will also significantly devalue the setting.
And settings as-is are able to accommodate a limited variety of shapes of a limited variety of proportions.

This guy is sounding more and more like a class A schmuck.

I don't know anything about Graff, but I saw a pic of their name stamped on the inside of the band in capital print letters. I can't copy the pic. On their website go to Bridal, and then Collections and see the pic of the square emerald ring. Good luck. I hope your setting is the real deal!

HI:

I am hoping that you did stumble onto a sweet deal. Unfortunately I am not a Graff expert (or any expert for that matter!) and cannot help.

cheers--Sharon

Re: GRAFF experts! Did I stumbled upon a real Graff setting?

can you post the picture of the setting you have on your phone?

Re: GRAFF experts! Did I stumbled upon a real Graff setting?

Nope, the setting cannot be made to fit just any diamond without ruining it. You'd have to have a diamond almost the same dimensions as the one that was taken out. So if it was 4 cts., you will need a 4 ct diamond.

If you can afford the 4 ct. diamond, then ask for a return policy in writing and have the ring examined by Graff for authenticity. But again, don't even consider it unless you can get the same size diamond to go in it.

But I am doubtful that anyone would take the original stone out of a Graff setting which will make both the stone and the setting worth far less than they'd be worth together.
