I am a newbie to buying gems, but I wanted to share my experience on buying a sapphire from Richard Wise. After I didn't really like some of the stones jewelers showed me around NYC, I found this site and lots of recommendations for Jeff White . I contacted Jeff, and he was very helpful. Using the pictures on his website, I let him know which colors were my preference, and what cut and size I was looking for (oval or cushion, 1.5-2.5 carat) He had a shipment coming in, but unfortunately he told me he didn't have anything at the time that would work for an oval or cushion cut.
I then found Richard Wise's site by reading some more posts. I gave him a call, and he walked me through the basics and described each stone he had that might work. He was patient with me and he also had a great sense of humor. The stone I decided to get was a more recent find of his, so it wasn't posted on the site, but he described it and compared it to the others he had. I decided to order it for the 5 day trial period he offered. When it arrived, I knew it was exactly what I wanted in color, cut, etc..
Right now his shop is working on the setting, which is a copy of an engagement ring I saw on the web...a simple early 20th century prong setting in 18k gold. I'm looking forward to getting the ring, but I just wanted to post my good experience in finding a great gem. Thanks Richard Wise!
If I can figure out how to take a good photo, I'll post a picture when it's done.
