Should I be looking at spinels? Maybe sapphire or tourmaline? Or something different?

I am specifically seeking a stone that looks a bit stormy, gray undertones but not flat lifeless gray. It's meant to mimic a loved one's very beautiful and unusual eye color. If you have any interesting finds, kindly send them my way!

My lord, are you in love with my middle daughter? You just described her eyes. She is an Econ/ history major at an Ivy league school...

Hehe doubtful! Beautiful eye color though, and one I fear will be difficult to capture!

Montana sapphires definitely capture the colors :wavey:

I wonder also if Alexandrite might be an option. Those are like needles in a haystack though.

I have a spinel that may be the exact color you are looking for. I haven't seen one in a while, but I did get it from Gemcal like Wyntery suggested... I haven't seen them update their Spinel section in a a long while (at least not a significant update).. Maybe e-mail them?

Otherwise, I think the Montana Sapphire could be one of the easier (and equally beautiful) avenues.

That color is the same as me and my significant other's eye color too. :)

Spinel does gray blue very well yet sparkles, so it would be your best choice. It is also untreated, durable and inexpensive. Sapphires cost more and tourmaline isn't as durable.

I think the GemFix one matches her eye color and brightness better.

These suggestions are fantastic, thank you :appl:

This is a random picure, but one I think is very close to what I am after. I enjoy gray tones in gems as it were, but it has to be a lively gray, something these suggestions capture very well. Some of what I have found on my own is less lively gray and more undesireable-secondary-color gray.

This isn't exactly it but it's close. A touch more blue and you have it.

Also quite close.

I also thought Montana Sapphires when I read the op and now that I've seen the eye, even more so. They don't have anything now but you might want to contact them: Dana at Mastercut Gems and Michael at Litnon (Gemline). Both are very nice to work with and in the past they've had some neat Montana sapphires. If it's a stone meant for daily wear the sapphires and spinels are more durable than tourmaline. Good luck!

p.s. in 19th century it was popular to have a tiny painting of a loved one's eye to carry with you... just a thought.

Spinel and sapphire.

Another vote for Montana Sapphire. :) I just got one, and it's probably more green and dark than what you're looking for outside, but inside it goes a neat stormy grey-blue (but still with a lot of life and flash).

Another person to contact is Blaze at blazengems.com. The pictures on his site are horrid, but he will take other photos, and if you tell him exactly what you're looking for he should be able to find you something. A couple people here have commented that what they got from him was way better than they expected based on the photo, plus his prices are very reasonable (IMO). I got mine from a vendor on etsy but one of Blaze's was running a close second and he has a wide variety of colors.

Really excited about the Montana sapphires!

That's the same color as my eyes, too! I immediately thought of Montana sapphire and intend to get one for myself someday.

I'll be watching (with my blue-green-grey eyes ;) to see what you get!
