Ugh, so I''ve decided to grow out my hair. It''s a couple inches below my chin in the front and stacked (alot shorter) in the back. Anyone have any advice to help me get through it? I love having short hair, but I want to try it long and actually stick with it this time and not cut it when it just reaches my shoulders...

I''m doing the same thing, except mine was really short and it''s curly! So right now I have a very bushy head of hair...

Mine''s curly but I have a great straightening iron by Chi. WOrks wonders without doing too too much damage...if you use silicone based products also

I hope someone has fantastic advice, because I could definitely use the same answer were waiting for :)
hehe.
I''m super impulsive, so I usually have it shoulder lenght and decide to BAM cut it short..
(im shoulder lenght now, so I''m fighting with it)

SweetPea, where did you buy your hair straightner, and could you give me more advice on it? (I''m looking for a good one to get myself!!)

I wasn''t patient enough to let my hair grow out. The longest I could get it was to my shoulders, and eventually cut. Then I started having it professionally straightened. At first they would straighten it with some kind of relaxer (I think). Now I have it straightened with a Japanese Straight Perm about once a year. My hair is probably down to my shoulder blades now (mid back).

WOW.. Wish I had a picture of me with short hair.. I used to have a little pixie cut hairstyle.. maybe I can find one and scan it later. It is past my bra strap now... I am so happy with long hair... But I really liked my shirt hair too.. BUT I HATED the in between times.. UGH!!!!!! Especially the getting it past my chin stage. NEVER thought I was going to get out of that stage. So What I usually did was straighten it and try not to think about it.. to much. Took me almost 5 years to start growing it out and to really stick with it. Went through about a year of yucky hairstyles and finally ... starting looking good. So well worth it. Good luck to everyone.. I know it sucks!!

Since your hair is longer in the front and shorter in the back, try wearing a head band, or hair clips until the hair in the back meets the length in the front. Or have the hair in the front trimmed every few weeks so it will be even with your hair in the back. A nice bob will look great, once you have hair that''s the same length. And some styles show a shorter back and a longer front. Just a thought. I have long hair and it took me forever to grow it to this length, and that''s what I did to survive the long haul. HTH, and good luck to all of you, it''s a pain I know!!!

I feel your pain sweetpea. When it got a little past my shoulders ... I would cut it. I just couldn't let it grow...so I thought. It's been three years and of course getting trims here and there but it's now more than 1/2 way down my back. It would have been longer but the goof cut more than what I wanted on my last beauty parlor visit.

Lately I've had the itch to cut it again. But I put that thought right out of my head. My hair is naturally curly too and the CHI is great. I love it.

This is the one I have, and I"ve had it for 2 years. It was actually my "big" xmas gift from my parents b/c it was expensive. It''s so worth the money though, I''m sure I''ve spent more than this on crappy ones that I just ended up throwing out over time.

marvel, could you elaborate a bit on the "straightened with a Japanese Straight Perm about once a year" ? (how long does this last you?) and does it basically mean you dont have to use a straightner every day?( sounds awesome)
is it a selective service ? (I don''t think I''ve ever heard of it..), but will look into it FOR sure.. (especially if it saves you time!)
(if you don''t mind answering, how much does it cost you when you have it done?)

haha sweetpea, I know what you mean... that''s why I''m looking for a really good one.
I''ve tried a billion "cheaper" ones, but they just seem to take 5 hours to use, or they don''t work period.

I want to have a good product! thanks for the link..
(my hair would look sooooo much longer if it was straight all the time)!

I found the best way is to seriously limit trims/cuts. I go once every 4 months or so. it helps to wear it up in cute barrettes or bands while it''s growing out..

I have a collection of flat irons too.

And I paid way too much for my Chi but it's so worth. If my b/f found out how much I spent he'd have my hide

I want to hear more too about this straigthening perm. I would do it in a heartbeat !!!

my hair is below my waist and i just had an inch cut off.....

best advice is stick with it and don't cut to have bangs. one length all around is best. i also like putting jojoba oil on my hair and leaving it for a 24 hour period before shampooing.

and this is a website i only discovered in august when i decided that my long hair required special care: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/home.php

they describe themselves as a forum for helping women grow their hair long. you will find many tips there. i was looking for long hair maintenance tips.

it is also how i found jessie from beverly hills [trained with George Michael, a long hair guru] who flies to san francisco once every two months to provide services for women with long hair. i had my first session [3 hours] with her about 2.5 weeks ago. very very pricey but very very good.

my hair grows good but that stage of between the ears and shoulders is always hard. once you can pull it back up and out of your face, you're really on your way. also, one length! i cannont stress this enough. no layering during the growing out. actually, i prefer the cut from the bottom until it's all one length and then grow it out as one length method. that's what i've done in the past.

i will not willingly have short hair again. the versatility my long hair provides me is wonderful and the ease of care can't be beat.

Hi Sparekly, Here's a LINK to the girl that does my hair. It should be able to answer most of your questions about the straightening.

I'm able to go about 9 months between straightenings. The cost can be anywhere from $500-700. It definatley cuts down on time. I don't use any straightning products on a daily basis. Blowing drying is easy and I only use the flat iron for a few quick swipes.

Hope this helps!

thanks so much!!!
I know a few of the ladies got intrigued when you mentioned it (I kept hitting refresh to see if you had answered

oops, i posted the wrong link above, although it does have lots of good hair advice for women of color. different hair, different problems. still lots of good advice.

the forum i utilized was: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/

Well, make sure you get it trimmed every 3-4 months depending on how fast/slow your hair grows. You will want a trim thats flattering with each stage of grow out. I personally wouldnt use irons or anything because you dont want split ends in hair you are trying to grow out. My hair grows super fast but when I cut it short and decide to let it grow a bit, there comes a point when my hair is neither here nor there. Its not long, it''s not short and it just looks blah. This is when you might cave and cut it again. Like others suggested use cute hair clips, head bands, do a zig zag part, side part something so you don''t get bored.

I have a chi and LOVEEEEE it!!! It is so worth it. My hair is between straight and wavy but those waves are tough to control. It makes my hair so smooth. Anyways, topic at hand, I would say you should still get trims every three months so you can get rid of the damage. I am growing my hair out for the wedding and am planning to wear it half up. Right now it is pretty long, my pony tail swings over my shoulder, but I cannot wait until after the wedding to chop off my hair (I''ll donate it) to my chin. I love having shorter hair but really want it long (for the wedding) and hate the idea of extensions (ick). I still have 10 months before the wedding so I wonder how long it will be ***suddenly scared*** I don''t want to look like Mr. It. I have friends that use hair/nail vitamins and swear by them. They say their hair grows in thicker and healthier.

Just keep letting it grow. Limit trims to every 4 months and use some protein treatments every few weeks. Treat it right.

T3''s work well, but are soo expensive. Though they burn the hair less which is nice, my bff has one and adores it. I am so jealous of all of you, especially Denise, you have soo much thick pretty hair.

Sweetpea, I feel your pain. Been there, done that.

Is the back of your hair layered or 1 length but short? If your hair is already 1 lenth (no layers) but just shorter in back than front, it won''t be too bad to grow out. Just let the back grow and have the front trimmed every couple months until the 2 lengths catch up with each other. In the meantime, I''d wear cute headbands and clips often. Once you have it all 1 length, you can just let it go and only have it trimmed when the ends need it.

I used to have short layered hair for years, then I let it grow out, to my waist, but the beginning was like 2 years of bad hair days until it was all one length and looking the way I wanted it. Once I got it to all one length, I just let it grow and trimmed the ends every few months until it got to my waist.

Last year, when I turned 40, I had it cut short again (collar length, layered and flipped out). I really like it, but now I''m bored again. I''ve let it grow a little longer, but I''m still deciding whether to grow it to my shoulders again or not. It''s so hard. Right about 6 weeks, I''m ready to cut it all off again. I just had a trim the other day, and it feels nice and healthy again. I can''t decide what to do. I''m feeling too old for long hair, but I don''t want short, old-lady hair yet either.

Thanks for the forum link, MovieZombie.

I actually use Caruso steam curlers, big ones, to "straighten" my hair. It gives the little flip at the ends to make it look "finished". Work like a charm.

Sweatpea, is it sort of like a ''bob'' in front? Sorry if this was already answered. If the front isn''t layered than it should be pretty painless to grow out. I''ve had super short layered hair before and I found as long as when you do get it cut and you let your stylist know that you are growing it out, they will cut it so that it grows out pretty pain-free. The only problem, with me anyway, is that that might mean it being short for alonger than you want it to be.

Good luck though, pretty soon it''ll be long and you''ll think ''that wasn''t so bad''

Hi,

Actually i think it''s going to be not so fun to grow...it''s angled from short in the back to 2 inches below my chin in the front. So the back is really short while the sides gradually get longer and the front is "long" (to me haha)

keep the longer sides trimmed to their current length. let the back grow until its the same length as the sides. at the same time, as the back gets longer and starts to match the sides, start having it cut so that its even all around. you now have the basis to start growing your hair long.

its not easy but it can be done.....been there, done that.

Protein can dry your hair out. Do not use!!!

I'm growing my hair out right now and agree that it's best to wait as long as possible between hair cuts. Be sure to see a top knotch stylist who can proficiently cut your hair so you can go longer between cuts. I hired a woman on who cuts my hair and then goes through and checks and retrims it three times to be sure it's exactly perfect without a single hair out of place. Since the last cut, I haven't had to get my hair trimmed *even with layers* and I'm going on ten weeks!

Good luck.

I agree. Assuming that the front is not layered, the back will give you the most grief. I've had a cut like you've described and grew it out, it was a slow process but a lot easier than when my hair was layered.

Also, protein is good for you hair but MC is right that if used too much it can really dry your hair out. I had a stylist suggest I use it because my hair was damaged but warned to be very careful how often I use it. I have alot of hair but it's fine and is easily damaged. So I'd talk to your stylist if you are going to use protein to see how often.

I'm growing out my bangs, and they in between my nose and upper lip. The rest is a few inches below my shoulders. There is nothing I can do where it feels good! It drives me so crazy and it's so hard to resist the urge to cut it so you can do something with it, but just hang in there...cuz it will grow! My advice is to go to a really good hairdresser and tell them your plan...

My son had the "shaggy surfer" hair thing going, and it was pretty long, and last night he wanted it cut...and I pulled out the clippers and bbbbzzzzzzz! He looks so much younger! Here is a pic of the back of our heads pre-cut (you can see my ring too
1.gif
) His hair is really that weird color too...it used to be really red, but CA sucks all the color out!

Note: We did buried treasure on the beach in front of our house for his B-day party! Big success, except we couldn't find it for the longest time!
