Halo vs no halo, larger RB

Hi everyone,

I randomly start doubting my custom project.. and wake up worried that the choices are wrong. Preface to say that the ring has already been started by Leon Mege… so it can’t really be changed.

In your opinion, at what carat size for RB, does a halo look “too much”

I feel there’s no limit for fancy shapes… but I don’t see as many larger RB with halo size and wonder if there’s a reason for that.

Thanks !

I think it really depends on the halo design/size of melee used, finger size, lifestyle and personal preference. I mean once it reaches a certain size it's really unwieldy, but that's pretty big! But halos are still visually pleasing at larger carat sizes IMO, it seems more of a practicality of wear issue.

For some reason I think emerald, oval, pear, cushion cuts at any size look good…. I’m thinking now it’s because they aren’t equal length on all sides….

I saw a YouTube influencer with 4.5 carat oval halo (Lauren B design) which was beautiful on her, but I spent the whole video thinking it was too much bling, so I internally freaked out. The influencer says that people grab her hand all the time and comment on it…

I haven’t worn a ring in 5+ years, and my husband is quite insistent that I wear it everyday. (Previously I had worn it to work everyday.)

HI:

Long time, no see! Hope you are well.

While it has been a long time since I looked at LM website, suffice it to say, he is an inspiration for delicate halo designs. I would look in his archives for reference. Perhaps it is one of the reasons you chose him in the first place--his execution.

There are some excellent examples of halo'd ring here in PS, with larger RB's. Easy to love them all!

I know you'll expect varied answers to your original question--as it is all preference.

Look forward to your finished ring. It will be stunning!

cheers--Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Nice to see you! It’s 25 year upgrade. Not of marriage (obviously) but of being together. I didn’t have much input with ring. All I said was thinnest halo. Thinnest band possible. There’s some Fleur de lys on the basket in honor of home (Quebec, Canada).

I didn’t give the ring much thought. And now it’s giving me nightmares for some reason.

I think the issue is that it’s an RB. In retrospect maybe a fancy shape (oval) would have been a better choice. I’m worried it might look like…. A headlight or something.

I scoured Instagram to find a pic of my exact stone with halo but not much luck… and PS neither. And I didn’t see the stone before (not even pics!) before it was purchased and set. So many unknowns.

I do have a very rough Leon sketch though. And I mean ROUGH.

HI:

I can understand why you have trepidation--no input into a significant custom ring project. And factor in you haven't worn a ring for sometime--getting accustomed to having ANY kind of ring isn't a small thing.

I am sure you don't have much spare time, but if you could find costume jewellery piece with similar proportions/dimensions to wear as a trial run--perhaps it could provide context. Also, could you take a trip to a fine jeweller near to you (Montreal or Quebec City?????) to see if they have something that you could try on?

And I the love the idea of incorporating Fleur de lys!

cheers--Sharon

Sharon,

Literally. And I mean literally, there was no jeweler in Montreal that had my stone in halo. Or my stone at all.

But you know French Canadians aren’t into big bling (they barely even get married).

I’m going to attach the only thing I have on the ring. And you’ll understand why it’s now seeming “insufficient” especially since I’m a control freak.

Its just at the time he ordered it…. I had just started my first job as an attending and the stress was off the walls… so I didn’t really care. Now I care! But it’s too late.

@allycat0303
Please relax... If it is already too late to do anything about, stop thinking about it. Wait until you have it at hand. If it looks awful (!) then do something about it. I am sure it will be gorgeous! And please learn from this experience to be more involved if it needs to be changed/in other projects.
I am sure your dh doesnt want you to wear something you are uncomfortable with. Talk to him.

I should have been more interested in the process is correct. Everything was done very fast. I spent 15 minutes looking at portfolio. I think my husband debated about 30 minutes for the stone.

I guess that’s my personality. I bought the first house I visited after spending 8 minutes in it. And without my husband seeing it.

However..: I do know he won’t be happy if I hate the setting and ask for another one…… he was very partial to my old engagement ring (which is why he wanted a halo) while I thought the stone could stand on its own.

He felt a halo would offer some continuity with the original ring. Sentimentality I guess.

Personally, I love a good halo (and it’s LM so its going to be a perfectly executed masterpiece of a halo).

I know there‘s a “show me your bling” thread somewhere about big diamonds. I‘m trying to find that but I did find this one and I think it shows how a larger round would look in a thin halo (um…magnificent!).

Elle!!!!

Thank you so much for the mrs-b pictures!!!! I “think” my ring will look quite similar to that one. My hands are a bit smaller (size 4) and it will be platinum… but I think it gives me a good idea. I feel better about it. I think its a ring that can be worn daily…

ETA: lol you rock even more. On that thread, there’s a poster named waity-katie… her stone is same weight. And size 5.25 so even closer… I hope it’s as delicate as VC setting :l

HI:

It is unfortunate your IRL shopping didn't yield any useful examples for you. You'd think there would, at least, have been a colored stone example for you to see (either ring or earrings). Alas it wasn't so.

I'd encourage you not to stress, but you will anyway. :saint: One thing is certain, with LM, your ring will be GORGEOUS!

cheers--Sharon

So glad I could help.

I think a small halo is going to accentuate your diamond, without being an overpowering force. @mrs-b ’s ring shows that perfectly! Now that’s a perfectly executed halo! :kiss2: If I’m remembering correctly, both LM and VC have gorgeous micro pave settings. I think your in good hands. If it makes you feel better, you could send LM a picture of one of these halo rings as an example of the thin style you’re looking for. For what it’s worth, I think your in good hands. He may have a brusque manner but his work speaks for itself.

I don’t think there’s anything such as “too big” - maybe if the stone+halo starts extending past the width of your finger. A 5ct in a halo will be substantial of course, but I don’t think it will be overwhelming or unwearable! In fact, I think it will look stunning!! But then again, I’m the person who decided to put a 3.5ct diamond in a double halo (ring still under construction, lol).

Elle,

Yes, Leon made my original engagement ring… so my husband wanted to go with him again. Nostalgia I guess? Also he’s met him previously when ring was polished.

I was very much leaning VC… but in all honesty, my husband did contact VC via email but didn’t receive a response. So decision was made.

My sister in law with tiny hands has a four carat round brilliant with a halo and I love the way it looks on her. It completely suits her style and personality. I think a lot of it comes down to that.

I wear scrubs 99% of my life. But I think it will be something nice to look at. I’m rather excited now having seen the pics (instead of concerned)

Yes! I have to scrub though and tie it to my pants. Only once… in 10 years did I forget and engagement ring stayed in the laundry basket. At work! Overnight. It was still there in the morning. Standing straight up at the top lol.

Did I somehow miss the size of the diamond?
What a fun surprise this will be! Come on it’s LM!

Hi, allycat! I think MrsB's ring at that time may have been around a size 7. So it is going to be quite different to have a 5 ct (?) diamond in a halo on a size 4 finger. m-2-b has a 5 ct round in a VC halo and I believe hers is a size 6. You can see a hand shot in post #11.

I think it will be huge and beautiful, of course. But it all depends on your comfort level in wearing a ring that large especially to work. I can't even imagine tying it to your scrubs, to be honest. If I could not keep it on at all times, I wouldn't wear it to work.

If you find it too large, I know others who have gotten a colored gemstone to set in their halo setting to use as a right hand ring. That way the setting is not wasted. For me, personally (size 5.5), I could not wear a halo on a 5 ct stone. My ring is 2.3 cts and is pretty huge with a halo!

Hi DiamondSeeker,

Nice to see you! I was thinking that finger size may not make a huge difference? My thought process is maybe less than 1 mm? So visually maybe about same?

I originally wanted to have the stone set with a hidden halo, and very thin diamond band… as in later years I found my original e-ring “substantial” three sided pave and miligrain… and wanted a change to something “less”. My husband. was pretty set on keeping halo… so I went with single sided pave as Leon said he could make it more “dainty” Aka thinner band, thinner halo. Now I’m seriously questioning my choice….

I totally can relate to the uncertainty about it. I see women here change settings multiple times for various reasons, and sometimes it is because the ring is too big for them. It is very hard when making custom settings to know if we are doing the right thing. I kept my AVR in a solitaire for EIGHT years because I couldn't decide on a setting! I finally went with a design I loved for years, so it turned out well. I think since Leon has already been working on the setting, you are just going to have to try it and see at this point. I'd go ahead and forewarn your husband that you have concerns about the setting and might reset another gemstone in it if it isn't right for you. Men just are not usually the best at determining what's best in terms of jewelry. I realize he had an attachment to a halo due to your first ring, but he could have gone with a 3 or 4 ct stone which would maybe have worked a little better on a size 4 finger. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that it is sweet and generous of him to want you to have a fabulous ring! But if it's so large with the halo that it's really not practical to wear to work, I am just not sure a halo is the best idea. In the overall scheme of things, making another setting is not that big of a deal. Many, many people here have had multiple stones and/or multiple settings to get the perfect combination. Don't feel bad if you have to do it. It very well may be that you adore the ring and all my affirmation of your concerns will be for nothing! I just wanted to express my understanding of your concern and encourage you to prepare for that possibility.

In fairness, there is basically no diamond e-ring of any size that is super practical if she has to scrub in on a daily basis.

On that note, please for the love of all that is holy @allycat0303 can you wear it on a chain around your neck or stick it in a tall sock or something?! The laundry basket story had me just about breaking out in hives
. Not to mention the thought of you repeatedly putting on/pulling off nitrile gloves over that big daddy rock + dainty micropave if/when you’re in clinic…

I’ve also heard of a neat trick from some surgeon and OR nurse friends, where they hang their ring on a safety pin and then hook the pin through their scrub top and around their bra strap — that way they can’t forgetfully toss off their scrubs and throw their ring into the laundry like they could if the ring was loose in a pocket or tied to a drawstring. But I guess this is less practical if you’re working trauma, delivery, or anything with lots of quick costume changes.

ETA: as I mentioned in another thread, I can’t wait to see this ring! I’m sure it will be stunning. Not sure how long it’s been since the work order was signed and LM got cracking on it, but I don’t think it could hurt to express your concerns with him, if it’s bothering you this much. Btw, I think it’s very sweet that you are humoring your husband’s sentimental side wrt the halo!

Hi, another doctor here from a non- US country where big bling isn't the norm, with a 3.5 finger size I'll be honest here.

In practical terms, I can't see that a ring that size, delicate, intricate, halo etc would be suitable for daily wear at work. Except maybe if you're having an academic or training day and not using your hands.

Aesthetic terms? That's entirely your decision. I'm sure it will be a beautiful ring. The amount of attention / gushing a ring receives is as much a function of the wearer's personality and prevailing culture as the item itself. But if attention makes you uncomfortable it's not an under-the-radar ring for sure.

Why does it matter to your husband that you wear it every day? Does he mean he wants it worn regularly and not languishing in a drawer (fair enough) or that you have to wear it to work (a bit unusual, especially in your job).

Hi @allycat0303 Nice to see you here and hope all is well. Happy anniversary.

At this point you just have to wait and see. I am sure the ring is going to be stunning no question. And I am sure you will love wearing it but perhaps not at work.

The question of course is will it be practical for work? My guess is no. When I was working I couldn't even wear surgical gloves over my ring. So if I had to scrub in on a regular basis or even just wearing protective gear while seeing patients I don't see that working well.

Just my opinion and I know when I am doing things with my hands (with the potential to catch on things or damage my ring) I do not wear my ER though a low profile band works for me in those situations. Maybe just explain to your DH that you can wear the ring when you are not at work but when at work it is safer and more comfortable to wear a simple band. I think that is a reasonable compromise. For all involved.

I hope you love your new ring and may you wear it in good health, love and blingy joy. :appl:

DiamondSeeker,

I agree with your sentiment. In the beginning, my husband spoke mostly about a 3.3 carat and even there I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it (halo vs non halo) I’m not sure how it morphed to being this size as it was never really on my radar.

The night he found the stone, he had asked me “what size do PS members think is a large stone” I said “5.0 + I guess” by the next morning, Leon had called in the stone he was partial to, as well as a few others and it was a done deal a few hours later.

I just feel really bad about a setting change, I find them very expensive. I think I would have to find a way to sell this one, which doesn’t sound so easy. I’ll warn him, but that’s a dreaded conversation.

Mary,

It was scary when it happened, but funny now. I guess it wasn’t meant to be lost. I do think safety pin to bra is a smart idea. It would just mean I need to remember a safety pin! And I’m pretty forgetful. I actually don’t see patients in clinic that much. I can’t remember the last time I put on nitrile gloves. LOL. In clinic I just “talk” to patients and explain surgery. And I scrub for 2 cases a day about 3-4 days a week. So that’s about 6-8 scrubs (exclude emergencies). Do some chest tubes because of Covid but maybe 3 times a week?

The ring is started unfortunately. My husband touched base last week and Leon said it would be done before Christmas…..

Millie,

There’s a few reasons he wants me to wear it.

Preface by saying, when we lived in Montreal, Quebec, he DID NOT care as no one gets married or wears e-rings there.

1. We now live in US where everyone in my hospital (nurse, surgeons etc) all wear their engagement rings.

2. He now wears his ring (he didn’t before either) because people here assumed he wasn’t married. And now he feels weird that

3. He points out that I did wear my e-ring for my entire residency (6 years) with only 1 “event”

4. People started asking him why I didn’t take his name or wear any rings.

5. We were at a restaurant together and waitress asked if we wanted separate bills (I’m Asian, he’s Caucasian) and he extrapolated to believe it was because he had his ring. I didn’t. Different ethnicities why we would be together, etc, etc. and while it was weird.. I’m not sure rings was the reason.

6. And most importantly, he knows I do love diamonds, and he thinks I should actually “enjoy” it.

I think strictly speaking, all rings in our profession is not that practical. In terms of personality/ attention. I am low key at work and low maintenance. I’m quite shy and no, I don’t like attention. Historically have had a lot of problems with not speaking up/trouble leading an OR. There’s some low to medium level social anxiety there.

I am not sure “how much he will care” I think I would put it at “annoyed” category.

Hi Missy!

Yes. All is well. Thank you! You are absolutely right. At this point.. I have to just be patient and wait for the results. Transiently drives me crazy and then I get over it and forget about it. This week has been “quiet” so I have more time to ruminate over it, goes in waves.

For some reason we are both fixated on it having to be “the one” and the “final ring” which is probably too much pressure. There will likely be some aspects I don’t like and learn to live with…

If it provides any comfort I want to share that I don't think anyone has the perfect ring for all occasions. Meaning there is no one ring that is suitable for everything. Especially because you are a physician working with your hands under sterile conditions. And add the fact we are talking sizable diamonds it just doesn't work 24/7 IMO. I have come to realize I don't think there is just "one". The "perfect one". I don't think it exists. Rather there is the "perfect one" depending on the day, the occasion, how you feel.

I am a ORTRTA type of girl and even I have more than one ring lol. In fact, since the pandemic, I have worn my Enso bands more than any other ring. Truth. It is just easier to wear when disinfecting 24/7 and working with one's hands. I love my ER but it's not for constant wear. At least for me. Of course we are all different but I feel from reading your posts over the years we are similar in wearing our diamonds.

What I love about a halo. It protects our diamond better than a solitaire. And I am a klutz so wearing my old cut necessities some protection. From me lol. And yes it adds sizable presence. I also feel it can enhance the beauty of the diamond by emphasizing its facets. I have gone back and forth thinking solitaire to halo to solitaire. I still haven't decided lol.

This is what I do know.

Leon is a master artist at what he does.
I have no doubt it will be a work of art.
I believe you will be over the moon with it.
I know you will love wearing it.
When it suits you.
I think your DH will understand (eventually).
And safety (and comfort) always comes before anything else IMO.

Also, and IMO this is a biggie, when we don't wear our ring all the time we appreciate it more when we do wear it.
Wearing it all the time might desensitize us to its beauty but when we take occasional breaks and then put it on, wow. It seems that much more gorgeous and we appreciate it and love it that much more. At least this is my experience.

Missy nailed it. Leon knows what he’s doing. The results will be stunning. And bear in mind, as emotional a process as this is - it’s a ring. the thing the ring is part of, the relationship, is what that matters.

Me, I am the opposite of ‘on one ring to rule them all‘ as I have 6+ rings I wear with my wedding band. Most of which are entirely unpractical, and I’m not a physician.

The ring is a transient, albeit expensive, but inanimate object, just a thing. it’s just a ring thing, not a life thing.
